Noticing Carlee’s actions,Nina became more vigilant.She held True more tighter to herself.
Carlee stopped right beside her,she looked at Nina and Said in the most pretentious tone,
"It’s pretty hard to say,your parents are gone,and you’re so weak.It’s really heart wrenching to see you this way."
Carlee breathe in and out,shaking her head lightly,she added,
"How about we do it this way,before you leave the hospital,I’ll look after my granddaughter for some days,while you take care of yourself.And as for for your parent’s funeral,Harley will handle it."
Carlee’s words cut deep into Nina’s heart.Now that her parents were dead,her daughter True was all she had.
Nina held more firmly to True,she looked up to Carlee and responded,
"I appreciate your kindness,but I’d rather take care of my child myself."
Harley noticed that his mother was trying to spite Nina.He moved closer to her,and whispered in an euphemistic way,
"Mom,Nina is going through alot now,please let her be"
"What do you mean Harley?,I’m just afraid that my grandchild will be suffer in here.True is still an infant.What if she get infected with some disease?"
"Such can never happen,not under my watch!"Nina defended still patting True’s cheeks.
"We can take care of one child.You should look out for yourself mama,you’re getting old"Harley muttered authoritatively,determined to protect Nina and his daughter at all cost.
Carlee glared at Harley and then to Nina,she knew she had been defeated in the verbal war,she had started.She stormed out of the hospital.
Harley sighed seeing that Nina’s face had clouded with nervousness.He slowly squatted and look up to her,in a bid to cheer her up,he said,
"I know my mother is very difficult to deal with,and all she has ever done,is cause you trouble.From henceforth,I will try my best to prevent you from coming in contact with her."
Nina glanced at True and then at Harley,with a cold voice she muttered,
"I can only be separated from True the moment i die"
Harley’s heart sank the moment he heard the ominous word.He pleaded in a more serious tone,
"Nina,please let me take care if you from now okay?,Our house is ready,and the decorative style is your standard,can we go check it out later,so we could move in?"
Harley’s words did nothing in uplifting Nina,she replied indifferently,
"I just wanna lay my parents to rest.I don’t care about anything else."
"It’s fine,I respect your decision."Harley replied with a smile.He didn’t want to pester her on it.
"Thank you for your understanding."Nina’s voice came in,it was polite and distant,and her dull red eyes were swollen and dim.
After days of awaiting the preliminary results of the fire incident,it finally arrived.
The police conveyed the information to Nina.She was told that the electric car parked at the gate had exploded due to a short circuit of the battery,hence the fire outbreak.
Hearing the police’s words,Nina’s face clouded in confusion,
"Who’s car was it?,And why was it parked at our gate?"She asked calmly.
Harley was surprised at the results as well.With a frown on his face,he said,
"The gate was devoid of cars when i had left."
Harley and Nina glanced at each other,knowing that something definitely was wrong.
The policemen went on to inform them that they hadn’t identified the owner of the scooter yet,and the CCTV camera wasn’t functioning on that day.
"There are indeed lots of questions concerning the incident,and those questions are also the focus of our investigation.When there’s new evidence,we’ll inform you immediately."The taller policeman said,he moved to Nina,took her hand in for a shake and added,
"I’m sorry for your loss,Miss Nina.Do well to contact us if you need any help."
"Thank you."Nina smiled bitterly,with sadness and questions running through her mind.
After the policemen had left,Harley had a conviction that something wasn’t right.
"Nina,I think someone deliberately ignited the fire"Harley muttered,Nina paused and said thoughtfully,
"I think so too,but we need to find the driver of the scooter."
"Yes,that’s the key to resolving this case.But the scooter was burnt to scrap,it’ll be difficult identifying the owner"Harley added as they both pondered on what next to do.
The report of the incident brought by the policemen threw Nina into a more depressed state.
The investigation was halted because the owner scooter was unidentified,and there was also an unexplainable spill of fuel around the gate,the surveillance camera in the city wasn’t also working.The whole scenerio was just too coincidental,it was enough to raise doubts,but all that could be done was to wait on the police for further investigation.
At dusk,it was about time for Tom to take up his shift from Harley.Harley bought dinner for Nina and fed her gently.
"Even if you do not feel like eating,you have to force yourself Nina,remember that you’re eating for True as well.You need to eat,so you don’t fall sick."Harley persuaded her,but she was unresponsive.
Staring blankly at the opposite direction,Nina felt so nauseated when she smelled the food.
"I don’t want to eat"she shook her head,pushing away his arm.
"Nina you need food to keep you alive,even if you’re sad,you shouldn’t subject yourself to starvation..."
"What am I living for?"Her mind wandered back to her grief,she said mournfully,
"The case is halted now.My parents died injustly,what have I done to bring them justice?,Nothing except eating."
Seeing the sadness in Nina’s face,Harley’s heart ached,he muttered,
"I Know how you feel,but if you want to bring them justice you need to be alive,right?"
Harley realized that even he couldn’t be passive.He planned on proceeding on a private investigation after the funeral.He was willing to do anything in discovering who was behind the incident.
"Let me have the fork,I’ll eat it myself."Nina handed True to Harley,picked up the food flask,and began gulping down the dinner.
Harley felt more uncomfortable that she was swallowing rather than chewing the food.He patted her on the shoulder and muttered,
"Eat slowly and have some soup.
Nina paid zero attention to him,she finished half a bowl of soup in just one gulp.Eating to her was just to prolong her life,just like a task.
In few minutes,she had emptied the entire plate.Looking at Harley’s complicated facial expression,Nina waved her hand tiredly and said, 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
"I’m done.You can go home now,I would like to be left alone."
Nina was to be discharged the next day,she still didn’t have a home to go back to.
