Chapter 533: Chapter 533: Barriers Are Hard to Eliminate

In the room next door, it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

Adrian Lancaster, dressed in a custom-made hand-tailored suit, stood with his hands behind his back at the window.

His expression was very calm, yet there was endless sorrow in his deep-set eyes.

The pain his mother had caused him over the years, he truly couldn’t easily smooth over with a simple apology and a response of "it’s okay," and then reconcile.

Those days spent secretly wiping tears alone, envying classmates with warm families, were like needles piercing Adrian Lancaster’s heart.

He originally thought that with a wife and child, he wouldn’t need maternal love anymore.

But when he heard about the earthquake, knowing his mother might be trapped under the rubble, his heart’s spasms reminded him he cared, that he was afraid of losing her.

When Eliza Hayes came out after her bath, she had mostly gathered her emotions; she saw Faye Turner still sitting on the couch, seemingly waiting for her.

The two women locked eyes.

"Mom." Faye softly called, then said to her, "On the way to Canada, Adrian asked why you came here. At the time... I made the decision on my own to tell him everything we know."

The middle-aged woman paused slightly in her action of drying her hair, holding the towel, her face pale, "He... knows about his background?"

Facing her mother-in-law’s slightly fearful gaze, Faye nodded, "He knows."

Eliza was stunned, holding the towel, dazed, her eyes filled with fear replacing surprise and disbelief, an anxious emotion enveloping her entire face.

No wonder Adrian’s attitude toward her...

He must... hate her deeply, right?

Eliza’s tears suddenly fell like broken beads; she bowed her head, "I’m not afraid of dying. Compared to death, I’m more afraid of... him hating me forever."

But Faye knew that these things had to be revealed to Adrian eventually; it was impossible to hide them from him forever.

"Mom." Faye consoled, "We inadvertently learned about the earthquake here from the news on the screen in the company lobby. Adrian immediately asked Dustin to prepare a private jet; he postponed all work to come here."

Faye said, "On the plane, he was very upset, very sad. He didn’t rest at all, just stared at the clouds outside the window with red eyes."

"If he didn’t care about you, he wouldn’t have come."

"..."

Eliza felt extremely complex and conflicted, not knowing how to face him or how to explain.

"Mom, it’s almost time to eat. You should dry your hair and come with me to find him."

Eliza said nothing; she turned and went to dry her hair.

She was envisioning how Adrian would question her and how she should answer.

Five minutes later.

When Adrian Lancaster opened the door, he saw his mother and wife outside. He released the door handle, turned around, and walked inward.

Arriving at the window, he tucked his hands into his pockets, leaving everyone a view of his back, "Gather all the information you know about my father and report it to me. I’ll investigate."

He didn’t question, which made Eliza feel very guilty.

Faye looked at the mother and son, turned into the adjacent room, and closed the door with normal force; the sound of the door closing caught Adrian Lancaster’s attention.

When he looked back, he saw that only he and his mother were left in the large living room. He glanced at the closed door, understanding his wife’s intention.

Eliza gazed unwaveringly at her son, her eyes feeling unbearably sore. She stepped toward him step by step, her eyes full of unspoken words.

"You don’t need to say anything." Adrian Lancaster’s expression remained as cold as ever, "I don’t want to hear it."

Eliza’s heart was unbearably sour, her chest spasming with pain.
