Chapter 51: Mrs. Miller, teacher of good parenting.

The lemon was thrown like the way one tosses a pebble to get someone’s attention. But the way Shalin gasped, Lady Miller might as well have shot Sienna with a real gun!

Outside the kitchen window, on the queen bee’s back, Ali gasped too, before chuckling.

Sienna rolled her eyes as the lemon rolled away, out the kitchen, through the side door and landing in the soft grass. "Mother, really?"

Mrs. Miller stood with her hands on her hips, the scarf around her neck flapping like a battle flag. "Yes, really! You ignored him Sienna. A mother must never ignore her child, even if he’s sulking and ill mannered."

Sienna sighed, reaching for the basket of lemons. "Mother, I am going to make lemonade with honey for the servants. I don’t have time to listen to your lectures on this matter."

Mrs. Miller sniffed. "I didn’t stop you, making lemonade is fine. But advice is better. And my advice is: talk to your boy."

Sienna sliced the lemons with practiced hands, juice squirting into the clay jug Shalin had called ancient on purchase. "Mother, he kicked a pebble at Honey Thunder. Do you know what would happen if she decided to sting?"

Mrs. Miller waved dismissively. "Bah. Children throw pebbles all the time. Bees sting to defend themselves and I am sure a bee that allowed you on its back would not have stung your son. But ignoring him? That festers."

Shalin joined Sienna, slicing and juicing the lemons. Sienna poured water into the jug, added the honey and stirred. "Shalin, call someone to take the lemonade to the servants in the grove."

She stretched her hand out of the window, pushing a glass and bowl. "Ali, come and drink some lemonade. Let Honey Thunder go and get some nectar from the flowers."

Mrs. Miller cleared her throat. "This is what I am talking about. You are willing to feed a bee but you are unwilling to keep a cup of lemonade aside for your son."

Sienna handed out more cups, to the servants near by, asking them to deliver lemonade to others on the property. She put a hand in her mother’s hand.

Mrs. Miller continued her barrage, "You think you’re clever, riding bees and naming them Honey Thunder. But cleverness, doesn’t raise children. Warmth does. Patience does. Even when they are angry. Especially when they are angry."

Ali piped up, licking honey from her fingers. "Grandma, Eli is mean to mama. He doesn’t deserve rides."

Mrs. Miller stretched her hand out of the window, poking the girl’s nose. "And you, little butterfly must learn that brothers are not enemies. They are allies. Some day you will need him. Don’t you see how your mom relies on your uncle Soren?"

Ali pouted. "But he says mama is bad. And he always shouts at her."

Mrs. Miller straightened. glaring at Sienna. "And you always ignore him. That’s worse. At least say something back when he shouts. Tell him that it is not nice to shout at his mother."

Sienna stirred the lemonade harder, as if the swirling liquid could drown out her mother’s words.

Soren appeared outside the window just as Ala and Honey Thunder walked away, to supervise the hive workers. "Mom, sister has her reasons for treating Eli like that."

Mrs. Miller jabbed a finger at him. "Reasons don’t matter. Results do. And the result is a boy who feels abandoned."

Soren chuckled. "Just like you had your reasons for throwing a lemonade at my sister. The servants are saying you almost took her head off."

Mrs. Miller gasped. "It was a gentle tap!"

Meanwhile, Honey Thunder was touring her new home, but it was unfinished and the hive tree creaked ominously. The queen bee buzzed inside, testing her new chambers. Ala cheered her on loudly.

The servants panicked.

"She is too big!" one shouted. "The hive walls are cracking."

Another wailed, "We need a sturdier tree. Or glue! Or the beast gods!"

There was so much chaos that Sienna left the house and came out to peek. When she heard the creaking she frowned, "Add support poles. Everything will be better once Honey settles in." The other bees were already buzzing excitedly.

She found a place to sit in the grass and started making suggestions which included decorating the hive with flowers and murals, to make it brighter. While they worked, she sipped lemonade and watched a movie. To some of the beast men, this behavior was seen as classic Sienna laziness.

She was still enjoying herself when Eli stormed over, looking like he wanted to raise a storm. "Bad woman, I heard everything grandma Miller said. You don’t care about me!"

Sienna paused the movie and raised her voice. "Mother, come and see the proof for yourself." She turned to the boy. "I told you not to call me a bad woman but here we are again. If you want me to care, start calling me mama like Ala."

The boy stomped his foot. "You only care about her!"

Sienna shrugged. "Because she is sweet and polite. If you are willing to change, I am willing to change how I treat you. We can be a proper, loving, mother and son. Eli, I am sorry for the past. I cannot change it but I can promise that it will never happen again. You don’t have to accept me immediately, but you can and you should change how you address me at least."

Eli looked at her suspiciously. He did not respond immediately, unlike his usual self that would be screaming ’bad woman’ already.

Sienna watched him patiently, waiting to see his reaction. If it was bad, she would let him be and wait until he was ready to forgive the past and move on to the future.

Mrs. Miller clapped her hands. "See, you can both get along. This is how it should be." She handed the boy a cup of lemonade. "Here, your mother made this and everyone got a share. This is yours. She saved it especially for you."

Eli raised his hand, and Sienna flinched. She could already see the lemonade flying and wetting her mother’s clothes. The boy probably though she had put some poison in there.

It seemed like he was hesitant, then he snatched it as if it would be taken away. "Fine, I will accept it. But I still want a ride on the bee." He lifted his chin like a tiny prince, and walked away, followed by his two guards that were always at his side.

Sienna snorted.

Mrs. Miller smirked. "Progress."
