Chapter 52: Sienna’s bloodline.

Timothy had never known his boss to be a whistler! But, something had obviously put Elias in a good mood because he was whistling, approving licenses, signing off on new, fancy equipment and armor for the fox vanguard. He was even agreeing to get them the latest flying and sailing ships which were not worth it because all they had to show for themselves was how colorful they looked.

It was a good day to make a request of the fox lord, that was all Timothy knew. It was also why he was calling in every beast man leader that had set a meeting with Elias in the previous week, only for them to be cancelled abruptly.

One such leader was Elder Thad, from the falcon beast man clan. He was tall, his hair thick brown and long enough to trail on the floor. His eyes were sharp--sharper than the red rubies on the walking cane in his hands. Much like Elias, he was dressed in all black. His cloak, with a wide neck was a little over the top.

Elias had a rare smile for the falcon beast man who carried the weight of centuries in his wings. His steps were slow, deliberate. His words were always carefully worded and he was always respectful. It was why Elias didn’t mind doing business with the man.

"Elder Thad," Elias’s voice boomed with vigor. "My assistant said you asked to see me three times and you refused to state your reasons." He leaned forward, ears twitching. His finger shoved the incense burner on the desk to the side. "What can I do for you?"

Elder Thad’s wings folded and he sat down in one of the three chairs opposite Elias. "I will be direct fox lord, this concerns your wife, Lady Sienna, and her brother. Their bloodline."

Elias’s eyes narrowed. "Bloodline? Explain."

The elder’s voice was low, almost sorrowful. "Their father Paris Rocland’s bloodline, specifically. He was one of ours, a falcon beast man. Unfortunately, he died recklessly, doing something he had no business doing. I have no plans to divulge what it is because it concerns my tribe. But, their father’s foolishness cost him his life--and his family their honor. They have been expelled from the tribe, cast adrift."

Elias’s fingers tapped against the desk. "And why should this matter to me?"

"Because," The elder said, slowly, "his family still lives. A wife, two daughters--nine and six years old. His parents, aunts, uncles, cousins. We both know what being expelled from the tribe means. They have to go into exile with nothing. They all worked in tribe owned businesses so their accounts were frozen. All they have are the clothes on their backs. The family is not all bad, they were not aware that Paris had other children outside. I was, because I was made aware when Soren awakened his falcon beast gene. So, I informed them about it and they are requesting to seek refuge with your wife."

Elias rose, pacing to the window. "So they want to burden my household because they have nothing. Do they not understand that Paris Rocland abandoned my mother-in-law, my wife and her brother many years ago. Don’t they know the chaos their arrival will bring?"

Elder Thad’s silence was answer enough.

Elias turned, eyes blazing. "My mother-in-law is kind. My wife may seem hard at heart but she is soft in her own way. Soren will want to know his bloodline. They will undoubtedly accept the Rocland’s. And then what? Paris’s widow will create issues with my mother-in-law. Then Sienna will hit someone with a pan. We will visit the beast king again. It is a disaster, elder Thad. Absolute disaster."

The elder leaned his head against his palms that were settled over his walking cane. "I warned them. But desperation blinds reason. These are your wife’s relatives, they have a right to meet her. She has a right to know her family and accept or reject them. In reality, Lady Sienna is their last hope."

Elias’s mind raced. He recalled a conversation his guards had relayed. It was an argument between Sienna and her mother, and her father was raised up. She would look at the children, fragile and wide-eyed and pity them. She would insist they stay. And she would look at her grandparents. old and frail, and decide to care for them forever.

But family was complicated, especially those who came with financial troubles and desperation.

He shook his head. "My wife is not a charity hall! Neither am I. It will be better if I know exactly what it is that they expect from us."

Elder Thad’s gaze was steady. "I respect you Elias, that is why I have to be direct with you. This matter does not concern you much. Your wife and her brother are Rocland’s. They are the ones most affected and they have to be the ones to decide if they want to pursue this family relationship or not. You cannot erase blood."

"Blood is a curse as much as a bond." Elias grunted.

"And beast men thrive in bonds, tribes, community." Elder Thad reminded him. "If your wife takes them in or acknowledges them, the tribe is willing to overturn their expulsion. Lady Sienna is your wife after all. The ties between our tribes will be deepened. Your wife will have a stronger background. Now of course, the overturning of the expulsion does not mean we are allowing them to return."

Elias’s ears flattened. "So, my wife and her brother are not allowed to be involved with the falcon tribe, but publicly they can acknowledge it to enrich the tribe and give it some good PR.

Her relatives are also part of the tribe on the outside but outcasts on the inside. However, your tribe will expect goodwill from the foxes and my wife for this.

Which of these things sounds logical to you?"

Elder Thad replied candidly, "This news will become public sooner or later. Which option do you think is better between your wife being a descendant of an expelled family or an ordinary but beloved member of the falcon tribe? Which option will leave your wife with less humiliation?

I never said I was bringing you good news or that these were good options. I don’t envy you, Fox lord. But the choice will soon be yours. They are already on their way."
