Maya smiled as she read the last words of the fourth novel that Oliver had given to her. She is a casual reader, but a week of staying in bed has turned her into a bookworm. Maya placed the book beside the lamp and stretched her arms.

She feels much better and believes she is fully recovered and ready to return to work. One week was enough; she didn’t need a month. However, Doctor Oliver knows best, so she is stuck in bed.

When Aiden visited her and informed her that they were dead, she cried tears of joy because her heart rejoiced.

"Maya!" The door burst open.

"Laura, Natalia!" Maya’s eyes widened.

Laura hugged her tightly. "You look fine! Thank God!"

"You look sick," Natalia said, scrutinizing Maya’s face.

"Yeah, but I’m recovering," Maya replied with a smile. "Don’t worry."

"You were kidnapped! Thank God you’re okay," Laura exclaimed, her voice a mix of sadness and relief. "We thought you were in Argentina, but after three days of not hearing from you, we started to worry. That was so unlike you. I went to the restaurant where you work with my boyfriend and asked a waitress about you, thinking they might know where the competition was taking place since you’re the sous chef and you are kind of representing the restaurant. The waitress told me that you were sick and had to take a month off. That got us worried like hell; we realized something terrible must have happened to you, and you weren’t in Argentina. We feared the worst" Laura’s shoulders slumped. "And we were right! You were kidnapped by who knows who. I’m so glad you’re okay. I thought I would never see you again," Laura’s voice cracked.

Maya’s chest tightened. "Same here, I also thought I would never see you guys again. I told Aiden to go look for you. I was afraid my stepfather had kidnapped you two."

Laura frowned in confusion. "Why would your stepdad kidnap us?"

Maya had no choice but to share the story of her miserable life with them. Laura’s eyes were red from the tears she had shed as Maya finished recounting everything to them.

Natalia tried to bottle up her emotions, but she couldn’t hold back the tears.

"You have suffered," Laura lamented. "Now I feel ashamed for all the times I was envious of how flawless your makeup looked. You were just trying to hide the bruises."

"No, don’t you dare feel guilty about that.?You didn’t know," Maya said as she sniffs back her tears

"I hope your stepdad and brother rot in prison for what he did to you!" Laura said angrily.

"They’re dead," Maya replied flatly.

"Whoa... really?" Laura asked in shock, then smirked. "Serves them right! Now they can’t hurt you anymore!"

"Yes," Maya smiled with relief, but she felt sorry for Aunt Lily, who had lost her brother.

"So, tell me how you all have been?" Maya asked, changing the topic.

"We lost our jobs. Venus City has a new boss, and he fired everyone," Natalia informed Maya.

"I’m sorry to hear that, guys."

"I got a new job as an assistant to a businessman," Natalia shares.

"That’s wonderful," Maya said, feeling relieved. For a moment, she thought Natalia might say she was stripping or joining an escort service. Maya wasn’t a judgmental person, but she thought stripping and escort work couldn’t be a sustainable income; she was glad to hear that Natalia had found a good job.

"What about you?"

Laura sighed. "I’m still searching. It’s only been a week since we got fired. I can’t expect to magically find a job in just one week of searching." She added a short laugh, but Maya didn’t miss the frustration in her voice.

"Yeah, don’t worry; you will find one," Maya said, trying to console her.

"Your boyfriend is so scary," Laura said in a feigned whisper.

"He is?" Maya chuckled.

"Yes! He interrogated us for a moment like a cold detective. He frightened me," Laura fanned her face.

"He’s back from his trip?" Maya murmured to herself.

Her heart thuds softly. She missed him so much. She wished she had her phone so she could text him. Maya paused her thoughts as something struck her.

Maya narrowed her eyes at Natalia, waiting for a response.

Maya smiled when she realized who it was. "Come in, Haven."

Haven entered with a bustling face. "I have finally been able to see you! Mr. Black told me you were sick, and I wanted to visit you right away, but he said I should wait until you’ve fully recovered. Today was my lucky day; I had to deliver a document to him, so I got the chance to sneak in here. He..." She paused her rambling and glanced at Laura and Natalia.

"Hi," Haven waved shyly.

"Isn’t she cute?" Maya chirps, sounding patronizing.

Laura giggled. "Yep, can we adopt her?" She shot Haven a smile, and Haven returned it. "This is Haven, my new friend, and she is Dalton’s secretary. " Maya introduced her.

"Haven, these are my friends, Natalia and Laura," Maya said, pointing to each of them as she mentioned their names.

Laura gave a little wave. "Nice to meet you! You are so pretty, Haven."

"You are too," Haven replied as Laura pulled her into a friendly hug.

Natalia simply nodded at Haven to acknowledge her. Haven returned the gesture with a smile.

"Well, since you have another visitor. We will be leaving," Natalia stood up from the bed and pulled Laura along with her.

"Hang out with us when you have the time," Laura quickly told Haven before Natalia dragged her out the door and closed it behind them.

"I will!" Haven replied hastily, but Natalia had already shut the door.

Maya completely forgot about the question she asked Natalia as her attention shifted to Haven.
