Chapter 48: A genius friend

Haven took a deep breath as if she had been holding it. "Laura is nice, but Natalia..."

Maya let out a short laugh. "She is unfriendly and grumpy, I know."

"She will warm up to you later. For now, you are just a stranger."

Haven pursed her lips. "I hope so."

"Let’s take a stroll."

"Okay," Maya stretched her arms lazily

"Let me help you." Haven took her hand and assisted her out of bed.

"Let’s explore the maze garden!" Haven suggested enthusiastically.

"I wanted to suggest that too," Maya chuckled as she looked out the window. She could see the maze garden, a zigzag of greenery that made her eager to explore. She is glad she was moved to this room. She gets to see the maze every day from her window! fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

This room is just perfect. Oliver moved her into this room five days ago. The one she had been in before looked bland and depressing, as it was purposefully used as a makeshift hospital room. But this room she is now staying in was designed to suit her taste and is as cozy as her basement apartment

"Let’s go!"

They darted out of the room with excitement.

"Where are you off to, girls? Lunch will be ready soon," Nana Rose called out just as Haven turned the doorknob of the main door.

"We’re taking a stroll," Haven replied.

"Good, good! You need some fresh air, Maya. You have been cooped up in your room for over a week now."

"Be back before your lunch gets cold," Nana Rose said, addressing Maya as if she were a little kid.

"Sure," Maya replied and went out of the door.

"Haven," Nana Rose called out, stopping her from joining Maya outside.

"Tell your dad he owes me a visit," Maya heard Nana Rose say to Haven.

Haven laughed and responded to Nana Rose in a way that made her snort.

"Don’t forget lunch," Nana Rose reminded Maya once more.

"I won’t forget," Haven said.

"Nana Rose knows your dad?" Maya asked as they approached the entrance of the maze.

"Yeah, my dad is a doctor. He is Oliver’s mentor and the director of the hospital where Oliver works at." Haven replied.

"Oh, I see."

Haven shrugged. "Yeah, the ties my dad has with Oliver is the reason I became the secretary to Dalton Black, the most powerful man in this country, at such a young age. It’s a clear case of nepotism."

Maya couldn’t tell if Haven was serious or just being sarcastic.

"How old are you, Haven?"

"I’m 20 years old," Haven answered.

"Are you still in college?" Maya asked as she did the math in her head.

"Nope, I graduated a year ago," Haven replied, earning a look of astonishment from Maya.

"A year ago? That means you finished college at 19?" Maya exclaimed, her eyes wide in disbelief.

Haven laughed. "Duh," she, flipped her hair smugly. "Yeah, I started college at 15."

"Wow, Haven! You’re one of those super geniuses!"

"What did you study?"

"Mathematical science. I’m now pursuing a master’s in Computational Mathematics," Haven replied nonchalantly.

"Wow, I have a super genius for a friend!" Maya was completely amazed. "That’s why Dalton made you his secretary. This is not nepotism at all. Being his secretary is even way beneath you."

Haven linked her arm with Maya’s. "Don’t take everything I say seriously, Maya. I was just being sarcastic about the nepotism. "

"Funny," Maya scoffs jovially. "So, how long have you been working for Dalton?"

"Just six months. One year more, and then I will quit and then start using my degree and master’s," Haven replies. She then gives a fleeting, sad look. "Maya, I hope you don’t think I’m too much of a weird nerd or too young to be your friend."

"Not at all! I’m 23 years old, just three years older than you. I don’t mind if you’re a bit of a nerd; I would still be glad to be your friend. But honestly, you’re not a nerd at all. You’re quite the opposite! You are a very interesting person, Haven."

"Aww," Haven’s eyes sparkled. "I’m glad we are friends. You’re awesome too, Maya." She grinned widely.

Haven’s giddiness rubbed on Maya as they trekked through the maze, chatting amicably.

Haven let out a long, frustrated sigh. As they took a turn. "Jeez, this hedge maze garden has so many twists and turns! I feel like we’re just going around in circles!"

"Stop complaining, Haven. You were the one who suggested we explore it. I know it’s frustrating, but all the confusing paths are what makes walking through the maze an adventure." Maya nudged Haven’s shoulder.

"Come on, let’s finish this and get back for lunch." They navigated their way through the maze and reached the exit, but then they riveted back, taking twists and turns that made Haven let out a lot of sighs.

"So, what is your dad like? Did he ever pressure you to become a doctor like him?" Maya suddenly asked as they stopped in front of the beautiful water fountain in front of the mansion.

Haven shakes her head vigorously. "Nope, my dad has never suggested that. He encouraged my two sisters and me to pursue other careers that we are passionate about. But my sisters ended up becoming doctors anyway."

"What about you? Did your dad ever bizarrely persuade you to choose a different career path?" Haven asked Maya, returning the question.

"Uh... I don’t know who my dad is, and my mother is dead," Maya blurted out in a beat

"That’s terrible. I’m sorry for prying."

Maya smiled sadly. "It’s fine."

"Have you ever had the desire to find your father?" Haven asked.

"Oh, I have to get back to the office!" Haven kissed Maya goodbye on the cheek and rushed off before Maya could respond to her question.

Maya looked in the direction Haven had gone, feeling perplexed and wondering why Haven had suddenly bolted away.

As she turned, she bumped into a hard chest. She lifted her head to find Dalton’s green eyes staring back at her. She was slightly startled. "How long have you been standing here?"

Ah, So he was the one who scared Haven off, Maya thought.

"You didn’t answer Haven’s question. So I will ask you that question again. Do you want to find your dad?" Dalton asked deadpan.
