Chapter 551: 551-What’s Next

Clementine:

Yorick avoided eye contact like a guilty cult leader.

He explained everything to us, telling us what the truth was and what we should have done to detach the North for some time.

"Then why did you lie to them?" Troy asked again.

We were all sitting in a circle on the living room floor. We had just finished breakfast.

"Because I don’t want you all to stay here," Yorick replied. "This is our problem. It’s not your problem. It was created by my family."

He rubbed his face with both hands.

"I know everyone’s families took part," he continued. "But my family was the main one that created the monsters. If they hadn’t made them, none of this would have started."

He answered aggressively while still dragging his hands down his face.

Mariana quickly began rubbing his back, showing her support.

Watching them like that made me feel relieved. At least now they were not alone.

Each of them had a partner. A mate who could guide them in the right direction if they ever made a mistake.

"But that’s wrong. How were you going to decide that for us?" Haiden argued, looking at Troy for support. Troy nodded at him.

"Yeah, Yorick. It’s our choice what we want. You can’t decide that for us," Troy added quietly.

My eyes shifted toward Ian. He was sitting comfortably, just like always. The moment he noticed me looking at him, he straightened his spine.

"Actually, everything you’re saying makes sense," Ian began. "But I think I agree with Yorick."

As soon as he said that, everyone’s attention turned to him.

"Look, staying here means someone has to make sure all the monsters drink those potions," he continued. "But it’s just as important that some of us stay on the mainland to deal with the issues there."

He paused, studying everyone’s faces before continuing.

"At least I’ll vote to go back to the mainland. I have a brother who needs me. I have a father who needs my support."

He glanced at me.

"As long as Clementine agrees. If she wants to stay here, then I’ll stay too."

His words brought a smile to my face.

I faced everyone and took a deep breath.

"Honestly, I don’t have a strong reason to go back to the mainland," I admitted. "Most of my family is basically here."

I did not hesitate when making that decision.

"I might feel a little embarrassed saying this, but I don’t like the mainland much. At least here, your enemies are right in front of you."

I glanced at Ian.

"But I’ll have a bigger family there now. I want to go for Ian. I think that would be right."

As soon as I said that, Ian gave me a reassuring nod.

We were going for his brother and father. At least, that’s what I told myself.

Otherwise I wanted to stay.

"But my mother is there," Troy explained. "And more than that, someone needs to keep my father, my stepmother, and Messi in check."

He made it clear that he also intended to go back.

The more we spoke, the more a smile spread across Yorick’s face.

"So it’s decided," Yorick concluded. "You’ll go back. I don’t want you staying here. It would be pointless for you. And the bigger the group, the harder things will become."

That was when I noticed Fauna turning to look at Haiden.

I understood immediately. Fauna wanted to go back, probably because her mother was there.

Then she looked at Mariana and smiled.

"Fauna, go back and do what’s right," Mariana suggested, giving her a nod.

"I will stay here with Haiden," however, Fauna refused.

"You want to stay here?" Yorick asked suddenly. He did not look very pleased.

"Do you have a problem with us too?" Haiden questioned.

Haiden looked offended, as if Yorick was trying to get rid of almost everyone.

"No, but I walked around the malls yesterday," Yorick replied. "Since there’s a chance the academy might stay closed, they haven’t stocked the marts properly."

He exhaled slowly.

"I mean, it’s enough for two people. But don’t you think it’ll be too much for four? Even one extra person would make it harder. We don’t know how many years it will take for the North to return to normal."

Yorick had a point. Still, it did not feel right for everyone to leave him alone here with Mariana.

"I think Yorick is right," Fauna said. "The more people there are, the more tension there will be. It will be easier for two people to take care of each other."

She rubbed her hands together before continuing.

"We can grow vegetables here. Fruits too. But that will take time. We want to stay here."

She said that while looking at Haiden and Fauna.

"And you need to go back and become the alpha of your pack, Haiden," Yorick reminded him.

Then his gaze shifted toward Ian.

"I know it’ll be difficult for you. You already have a pack," he said. "Is it possible for you to take care of my pack as well?"

At that, Ian straightened his spine.

"You don’t want to come back and take your pack yourself?" Ian asked.

Yorick began shaking his head.

"At least I don’t want that to be my goal right now," he replied. "When I return, we’ll see. But for now, my pack will be very vulnerable."

He lowered his voice.

"I don’t want bad people attacking them. They’re weak. They were already terrified of my father. They’ve suffered enough. Please."

Yorick’s words shook us.

It became clear that life was not ending here. Bigger challenges were waiting for us ahead.

"So what do we do?" I asked.

"First, we should go and bring down the towers," Yorick suggested. "We need to stay one step ahead. We don’t know what’s happening on the mainland. Maybe they’re giving Ian’s father a hard time."

He was right. We also had to detach North so that no one is forced to come here again.

"Yes, we’ll bring down two towers," Yorick added. "We’ll bury one stone on the Dark Side and one on the Good Side."

But the problem remained.

We all sat there thinking. By the time we reached the Dark Side and buried the stone in the woods, the tower would have already fallen. The monsters would start spreading everywhere.

"I don’t think it will happen that fast," Mariana stated, rubbing her palms together as she stood up.

"Yes, I think she’s right," Ian agreed. "Most of the Dark Side monsters stay on one side. They’re usually not near the woods." he sighed.

"But it’ll still take time for us to get there," Ian continued. "And that delay matters."

Our faces began to fall.

"We have to at least try," Troy said. "We’ll deal with the rest later. Let’s choose towers that are closest to the Dark Side. The other towers will still be standing."

As soon as Troy said that, we all nodded.

It was risky.

But we were ready to do it.
