Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse-Chapter 429: Hope
Leng Pan and her team went back to the base after they finished collecting everything they could from the factory.
They had collected a lot of food this time. Enough to last their base for months if rationed well.
Once they returned to the base, the supplies were all placed in the compound where everyone could see and split according to the number of households and how many people were in each household.
Leng Pan, however, didn’t take out everything from the space.
She had taken so many boxes of supplies and piled them in the warehouse in the space bangle and she didn’t want to expose her secret.
If more people found out about the space bangle and what kind of space it had, it would be a huge problem.
Especially for greedy survivors like Commander Qui. She wanted nothing to do with people like that.
Moreover, if her space bangle was exposed, it’s also very likely to expose the fact that she had the catalyst core and she would never let something so heaven-defying fall into the hands of the enemy.
After the people in the base who didn’t go for supply hunting exchanged the supplies they wanted with crystal cores, everyone went to rest.
Leng Pan and her family also went back to their apartment.
Uncle Li had already prepared dinner by this time and like always, it was a sumptuous feast, especially after gaining so much that day.
That could afford to be extravagant without worrying that others would notice they were eating fresh meat and vegetables.
That night, everyone in the base would have a better meal than any other day. So, no one would care what the neighbour’s food smelled like.
For many people in the base, that day was almost similar to the normal days before the apocalypse.
However, that was just their imagination and the following day proved that.
The extreme heat had finally ended and the weather had been pleasant for a couple of days.
The most optimistic people even began discussing how since the weather seemed to have gone back to normal, all the zombies would miraculously disappear and everything would go back to normal.
Lu Tao, with his super hearing, could already listen to conversations from miles away. So, not only did he hear what the people in the base were saying, he also knew what those scattered survivors in other hideouts near the base were saying.
During one of those moments, he happened to hear a man and woman talking.
"Do you think the apocalypse has ended now that those weird weather situations have stopped?" The woman asked hopefully.
"I am not sure. Even if the weather is better, what about all those zombies roaming in the streets and hiding in tunnels?" The man asked in return.
"Maybe they would just drop and die. They are dead people anyway." The woman said again. Sounding a little too hopeful.
"I doubt something so good would happen. I heard that we are not just dealing with zombies but aliens as well. Things aren’t that optimistic even if the weather is better." The man sighed when he said this.
If someone had told them a few months ago that they would be living like people in the stone age, they wouldn’t have believed it even if they were beaten to death.
With all the advanced technology, who would have thought that people could be sent back to the ancient era?
"This kind of life, I really don’t want to live it. Living worse than animals. If I wasn’t afraid that killing myself may cause me not to reincarnate, I would have done it long ago." The woman said. Frustration could be heard in every word she said.
"Don’t talk like that, Dora. Even though our lives are not comfortable, at least we have a life. Who knows, things might change tomorrow." The man comforted the woman.
"I doubt that. Maybe things will just get worse, but we can’t do anything about it anyway. I was hoping to have a baby of my own but now, I don’t dare to even think about being pregnant. Is humanity going to end with us?" The woman asked again.
Lu Tao could tell that the woman was getting emotional and immediately stopped listening.
These kinds of conversations took place in different places.
Everyone was hoping that the apocalypse would come to an end.
However, no one knew how to end it. The only straightforward way was to eliminate all zombies and aliens.
But this was also like a dream because there were more zombies in the world than humans.
Unfortunately, what people hoped for didn’t come true.
The apocalypse didn’t end, instead, it escalated.
On the third day after leaving the factory, the weather took a turn for the worst.
Rain began falling as if the heavens were angry at the world and were seeking to punish the sinners.
Rain poured non-stop for a day and a night.
On the third day, it eased a little, but it didn’t stop completely.
However, due to poor drainage management, water had already started flooding everywhere.
By the third day, anyone who walked out of their building would have water reaching their calf.
"If this continues, we won’t be able to leave the house in a couple of days." Li Yunjia said as she stood by the window watching people harvesting the vegetables they had planted outside.
If they weren’t harvested, they would just be ruined by the flood water.
"This should be another disaster. Just like in the ancient earth, floods were part of the disasters that took many lives of survivors. They either drowned while trying to go out to look for food, or starved to death because they had run out of supplies and couldn’t go out to look for more because the flood water was too high." Leng Pan added as she came to the window to observe the outside with her mother-in-law.
"I hope things will turn for the better. If not, humanity will really have a hard time surviving." Li Yunjia said again with a sigh.
