Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 56: One Step Forward (3)
Adrienne closed the folder and hummed. Her Uncle Reese only had a week of vacation, and he would need to return to his camp soon. Still, since he promised to bail Hunter Nian out of prison, she was bound to meet the man before her Uncle Reese left. However, the person she’d been trying to find at the gym still hadn’t shown up and she didn’t know where else she would find such a valuable person.
"No, I don’t think that’s necessary. Uncle Reese and I already have plans. I’ll be hiring a personal assistant within the next few days, so you don’t need to worry about my safety, Mr. Si." She answered.
Jinling City was the capital of this country and wasn’t that far from Changshi City. The city is the center of the country’s economic, political, social, and cultural activity. It is a densely populated city that also houses traditional architecture and modern skyscrapers. Compared to Changshi City, Jinling City was known for its artistry and historical sites. This was also where she lived with Alistair in her previous life, so the place wasn’t foreign to Adrienne.
"Alright. I’ll tell Nox then. He’s been the one pestering me to convince you to bring a bodyguard anyway."
"You and Lennox must be really close for you to be able to endure his demanding nature."
Gavin sighed dejectedly and pinched the bridge of his nose.
’Ah, finally. A person who could understand my sentiments when it comes to that tyrant.’ He thought. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶
If not for the fact he and Lennox knew each other from a young age and were business partners, Gavin would have left him a long time ago because of his obnoxious attitude.
"You have no idea how many headaches that man has given me, Ms. Jiang. He tends to be overbearing to some and wouldn’t be willing to accept defeat easily." He grumbled, remembering his earlier days with Lennox.
"Then that day... he must have felt like he had lost all reason to continue living. Lennox is not usually one to say such depressing words."
Gavin shrugged. If Adrienne hadn’t slapped Lennox that fateful day, bringing some sense to him, Gavin knew things could be worse. At least with Adrienne around, she was able to pique Lennox’s curiosity. He wanted to see how she would deal with her traitorous Jiang family and whether she would come out victorious in the end.
"He and his father never got along even when he was younger. Nox used to do things to annoy his old man or anything just to spite him. I guess his father’s death affected him no matter how hard he tries to deny it."
He knew Lennox longed to be acknowledged by his father. He’d seen how hard his friend worked to get to where he was now, only to be left crippled by the accident as soon as he returned home. Lennox must have thought he was back at square one.
"But I’m relieved you are here with us now, Miss Jiang. You have no idea how much you’ve helped us."
Adrienne tilted her head to one side, waiting for him to continue. She was curious why Gavin would say such a thing to her. She and Lennox had just recently met and she didn’t think they were close enough to understand each other. She then remembered the words Lennox told her last night and couldn’t help but ponder what he meant by that.
"Ever since Nox made a deal with you, I can see he’s trying his best to recover faster. I haven’t heard a single complaint from him since then. He used to throw a fit whenever we tried to persuade him to move his legs or take his medicines. Now, he does them willingly. I suppose he wanted to be useful to you somehow."
Adrienne didn’t believe she was the reason for Lennox’s changes. There must be another reason that didn’t involve her. However, since she didn’t want to offend Gavin, she remained silent. She would rather focus on her next plan as the birthday banquet was fast approaching.
"It would be better if he’s doing it for himself and not for others. It would save him from the disappointment if he does."
Not only did Adrienne not want to have any attachment with Lennox, she also would rather avoid being held responsible for his choices and decisions.
Gavin was about to answer when Samantha came out of the changing room. She had changed into a new set of clothes and looked much better now. Samantha returned the coat Adrienne lent to her earlier, muttering a quick thanks and apology.
"What now?" Samantha asked Gavin. The lawyer that accompanied them earlier had already left. She didn’t think Adrienne would allow her to return to the dilapidated home she used to share with her mother.
Gavin told her that they would get rid of that place by selling it. The money will then be placed in her account, which she can access once she turns eighteen. Samantha agreed easily as she didn’t want to have any lingering thoughts about that place. She could only hope her deceased grandmother would understand her decision of selling it.
"I’ll bring you to Jinxiu Garden where you’ll live with the rest of your siblings. Nox is still recuperating and it would be nice if you and the other kids are civil to each other and not cause any trouble. I don’t expect you’ll get along with your siblings or Nox, but please avoid giving Miss Jiang any headaches as she will soon be your sister-in-law."
Samantha nodded and stood next to Adrienne. She wanted to hold Adrienne’s hand, but she didn’t want to look childish in front of others. Thinking about it, she wished her older brother would marry Adrienne soon so she could shamelessly brag to others that Adrienne was her sister-in-law. She also couldn’t wait to live with Adrienne under the same roof and didn’t care much about her half-siblings.
