Chapter 247: Arachne

"Who dare to hurt my children?" A scary voice that was neither female nor male filled the air causing the remaining spiders who were still suspended in the air to scurry and disappear.

Nothing could scare the spiders other than their mother. That was before they encountered the torch and the laser gun.

The three humans had already seen bizarre things in the forest, yet they were still not prepared to face what was in front of them. It was the fusion of a beast and a human. Just the voice alone can cause one’s hair to stand on its end, how much more its looks.

The beast before them has a round body of a spider. It has four human limbs that are thin and as long as its spider legs. Yes, it has eight legs just like the other arachnids. It has a short neck and has a human face. It’s big eyes were as glassy as that of a spider. Its nose was thin and long and its mouth was the mouth of a spider.

Vasquez involuntarily urged his horse to go closer to Amaya. He was hiding from the human spider and he thought that Amaya would be a good shield.

"We did not want to hurt your offspring. They attacked first. We just wanted to pass through and get out of this forest." Amaya said breathlessly.

"Ha! The audacity! I hate your guts human!" The human spider hissed. Then she slowly rose to her full height using her two human legs. Amaya was sitting on top of Artemis and she was looking straight at the human spider’s eyes.

Marx urged Apollo to come between the human spider and Amaya. The beast shifted her glassy black eyes toward Marx.

"Trying to protect her? Ha ha ha." The human spider laughed evilly. "Don’t worry, I will wrap you with my web facing each other. You will be together even in death." She said hatefully.

She remembered her mate who tried to protect her in every way possible just like what the man was doing now. But the moment they mated, she felt an uncontrollable desire to kill and eat him. No matter how hard she resisted, in the end, the spider’s instinct was too much to bear. She gave in, killed her mate, and ate it. When she became sober, she felt remorseful. She hated herself but her hatred to the humans who made her like this was even greater.

In the past few years, she would kill all the humans who entered the forest and strayed to her territory. She did that to avenge the death of her mate.

When the first batch of her babies hatched, she found out that a few of them looked like her. So she killed them. She wanted to save them from the heartache that she experienced. Nothing can be more painful than killing and eating your mate after a passionate bout of copulation.

"Don’t you dare!" Marx shouted. His hand tightened at the laser gun that he managed to dig out from his backpack.

The human spider continued advancing. Marx aimed the laser gun at her lower limbs and shoot.

The smell of burnt flesh permeated the air. The human spider wailed. She was in great pain. She retracted her human limbs and crawled on her spider legs.

Marx pointed the gun at the spider’s front legs and pulled the trigger. A bluish light appeared and seemed to pierce through the spider’s leg, but the human spider felt nothing and continued to advance.

"Attack them and don’t let anyone escape." The empress of the spider kingdom has given the command.

The spiders that preciously retreated were now going in their direction at full speed. Marx and Vasquez waved the laser gun at them and many spiders fell down from mid-air.

Amaya took out a sachet from her skirt pocket. Using her torch, she lighted the sachet until it emitted a strong fragrance of citrus, peppermint, tea tree, lavender, and cinnamon.

Amaya was busy with burning the herbs. Vasques was also busy killing spiders at his side and so was Marx. No one saw when the human spider spewed out a net of cobwebs and threw it at Marx who was caught off guard. The sticky web enveloped him and he couldn’t move. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖

Amaya took out a small arrow from the quiver at her back. The arrow was laced with poison. She flicked something underneath her right arm and her arm guard transformed into a wrist-mounted crossbow. Amaya positioned two arrows at lightning speed then she shot the first arrow. It hit the spider’s body before the arrow fell to the ground.

Amaya was dumbstruck. The tips of her arrows were very sharp. it should have pierced through the spider’s body unless the body was like hard armor.

Amaya speculated correctly. Indeed, the human spider’s body was just like a bulletproof vest.

Amaya lifted her right arm and aimed at the beast’s glassy eyes. It was a bullseye.

The human spider let out a high-pitched scream that disturbed the winged creatures nesting in the nearby trees.

She became angrier and spewed more cobwebs. But because her right eye was injured and couldn’t see properly, she was throwing webs at random.

Amaya lifted her writs and aimed at the human spider’s left eye.

"I am repeating myself. We do not want to hurt you. All we want is to pass through and exit this damned forest. I can injure your other eye but I don’t want to, as you will not be able to fight fairly."

The human spider thought for a while. Indeed she was hurting and she felt dizzy. Was it because of her injury or was it because of the foul smell that assailed her senses? Her children were all unconscious as they hung suspended in their webs. Some were even on the ground. She would lose consciousness soon. She needed to go back to the cave and hide there. That was the only place that was safe for her.

Without saying anything, she retreated as fast as she could. It was taking a lot of effort for her to stay awake. She could not sleep. Not yet.
