Chapter 248: A Child’s Love

A few meters from the entrance of her cave, the human spider fell to the ground with a loud thud. An arrow was still pierced on her eye. She dared not pull it out because she knew she would bleed to death. She planned to take it out inside her cave because she stored herbs that could stop the bleeding.

Some parts of her body were that of the human and she experienced being hurt in the past. She learned to treat her own wounds because she had limbs and hands to apply the herbal medicine.

But now, she could not even do that. As her consciousness started to slip away, she felt something sticky enveloped her big body and she was pulled bit by bit into the cave entrance. Then everything turned black.

Amaya did not bother with the human spider at all. The poison she placed in the arrow was not potent. Its main purpose was to temporarily immobilize the enemy.

"Vasquez, let’s go. The effect of the smoke is only temporary. The spiders will wake up soon."

Vasquez was standing beside Marx who sat motionless on top of his white horse. When Amaya was battling with the human spider, Vasquez took advantage of the distraction and led his horse beside Marx. His upper body was wrapped in a silken cocoon. He frantically cut the cobwebs on Marx’s face.

Amaya joined Vasquez in freeing Marx. She took out her jungle knife and used the serrated part of the knife to cut through the steel-like cobwebs. It was an arduous effort and both were sweating profusely. After a few minutes, they were able to free Marx.

"Are you alright, Marx?" Amaya asked worriedly.

Marx did not answer. He was in shock and he sat unmoving on the horse like a statue.

Amaya mounted Apollo and sat behind Marx. "We don’t have time. We need to get out of here." Amaya threw Artemis’s improvised rein to Vasquez. She circled her arms around Marx and held Apollo’s rein.

"Hey, buddy. Get us out of here as fast as you can and bring us to a safe place." Amaya talked to the horse and patted his head.

As there were no more spiders blocking their way, Apollo moved forward carefully. This part of the forest was unfamiliar to him because it was the most dangerous. He did not know why the humans who he thought were very smart suddenly turned stupid and chose the most dangerous route.

Amaya loosened her hold on Apollo’s rope. She knew that the horse would bring them back to a safer route. She tried to rub Marx’s right arm with her right hand. After a while, she shifted the rope to her left hand and massaged Marx’s left arm.

After rubbing his arms, she embraced him tightly and leaned closely on his back to transfer her body heat to him. She wanted to replace the coldness of his body with the warmth of hers.

"Marx, can you hear me? Speak up. Don’t scare me." Amaya was becoming more worried. Was he poisoned? Why was his body so numb and cold?

The horses could only walk and not run. There were too many vines or bushes blocking their way. As much as Amaya wanted to stop so Marx can drink something warm, she had to think about their safety. They hadn’t gone far from the spider’s lair. They can definitely catch up with them.

Amaya rubbed both hands together to generate more heat. Then she lifted Marx’s shirt at the front. It was a difficult task because Marx had a backpack at his back. It was difficult but Amaya persisted. She placed both of her hands on Marx’s chest and pressed hard. She also tightened her hug.

Thump ... Thump...Thump

Amaya felt Marx’s heartbeat on the left hand that was pressing his chest. It was faint and slow.

"Marx... Marx.. wake up." Amaya spoke urgently. Her warm breath fell on Marx’s nape and warmth traveled from his nape down to his back.

Amaya hugged Marx even tighter and the warmth spread to his abdomen and his chest.

Thump ... Thump...Thump...Thump..Thump..Thump...

Marx’s heartbeat turned into a drum roll.

Amaya: "..."

"Princess, are you trying to take advantage of me?" Marx said in a hoarse voice.

Amaya pressed her forehead on his back and the pair of palms against his chest were pressed harder.

"Marx, you are awake. I am so worried." Amaya withdrew her hands and Marx suddenly felt empty and cold.

"I am cold again. Can you put back your hands? It is helping me dispel the coldness." Marx said pitifully but he had a smirk on his face.

Amaya did not hesitate. She put back her hands that she had retracted. Then she suddenly thought of something.

"Are you really that cold? How come I can feel that your body is hot and your heart is beating so loudly that I can even hear it."

Marx cleared his throat. "I am indeed cold and my body is still stiff and numb. I think the human spider’s cobwebs are laced with poison that messed up with my warm and cold receptors."

"How did we escape? Is that monster dead?"

"I shot her eye with a poisoned arrow. It should be seriously injured and should not be able to catch up with us.

"I hope it is dead, then there is one less monster in this forest," Marx said gloomily. It was an embarrassing moment for him to be seen in a helpless state by the woman he loved.

At the cave...

Two small human spiders were arguing about whether to pull the arrow from their mother’s eyes or not.

The younger one was braver. He pulled the arrow without flinching and a pale blue liquid gushed out from her eye. The elder brother poured the sap of the herbs that would make the blood stop in his mother’s eyes.

When they saw that the blood had stopped, the elder son, dragged the small human spider to the deepest part of the cave. He did not want his mother to discover that he and his sibling were able escape death.
