Chapter 246: Dangers Lurking In the Dark

The horses followed the same route when they came. However, when they reached the river and wanted to cross the shallow part, a few uprooted trees and boulders blocked their path.

"What could have happened here?" Vasquez asked as he surveyed the surrounding areas when their horses stopped. "It did not seem like this was caused by animals fighting."

"No. The trees were intentionally uprooted and placed there." Marx observed. It will take a long time for them to clear the trees.

Amaya suddenly thought of the werewolf and shuddered.

"Let’s follow downstream and look for a safe place to cross." Marx clamped his legs on Apollo’s body. Apollo seemed reluctant but knowing that there was no way to cross he started marching at the bank of the river following the current.

Their progress was very slow because of the thick bushes and vines that grew abundantly on the river bank. An hour passed when they finally found a shallow part safe enough for the horses to cross.

"Marx, we have to cross fast. This part of the river is infested with alligators." Amaya said while her eyes darted around and studied the river.

"Alligators are not agile. We have the advantage of speed so we can outrun them. Let us make a run for it." Marx decided. Initially, he wanted to cut some branches and make spears with pointed tips at both ends but it would further delay them so he decided to just cross the river the fightest time possible.

"Hey buddy, our safety is in your hands," Marx whispered into Apollo’s ears.

The horse snorted softly.

"Let us cross the river side by side so we reach the other bank at the same time." Marx looked at Amaya and Vasquez. They both understood what his plan was.

"Gidiyap!"

Marx gave the signal and the three horses’ hooves hit the water which caused it to splash. The foamy water sprayed everywhere and caused a disturbance.

But before the alligators could even open their mouths, the three horses had already crossed the river. They even unknowingly killed three alligators who happened to be lying still at the riverbed. They had trampled on them because the horses thought that those were rocks.

When they were about a hundred meters from the river, the horses suddenly stopped and neighed. They became restless.

"What is wrong with their horses? Why don’t they go forward?" Vasquez asked in exasperation. If they did not hurry, it would be difficult for them to come out of the forest before sunset.

Marx also did not understand why the horses were agitated but Amaya felt a sense of danger lurking not far away. The horses felt it too.

Amaya soothed Artemis with her gentle voice. She scanned the forest floor ahead of them. Layers of thick leaves and dead branches have accumulated. A ray of the sun that happened to pass through the canopy of leaves hit something on the ground and it glistened. She saw what looked like a few logs wrapped in cobwebs littered the ground.

Amaya looked up and a chill ran down her back.

"What do you think are those on the ground over there?" Marx twisted his neck to look at Amaya. Vaszques also looked at Amaya, then both men followed her gaze.

"Holy shit! What.. are .. those?" Vasquez stammered. He was very brave and has never been afraid even if he faced a hundred enemies. But looking at those black hairy spiders that were the size of his fist, his eyes registered a look of fear. And there were many of them.

It was not just the spiders. There were also different shapes wrapped in cobwebs like a cocoon hanging on the tree.

"Do we cross the river and find an alternate path? I should have sent out the drone to scout first." Marx murmured.

"It is too late for that," Amaya said. She was anxious. She had never seen so many spiders of that size before. The black and the hairy bodies gave Amaya goosebumps.

"Vasquez use your laser gun to kill them." Marx urged Vasquez. A few of the spiders were moving toward them aggressively.

Marx adjusted something on his torch and pushed a button. Blue flame that shot out for two meters came out of the torch and instantly killed more than ten spiders. The acrid smell of burnt flesh assailed Amaya’s noise.

The other spiders paused when they saw their brothers die.

Unbeknownst to the three human, many of spiders have crawled on top of the trees and have surrounded them from above. They spunned their webs and descended from the top of the tree to attack the three human and three horses. The horses and the humans were big,so they were in for a feast.

The three of them were wearing a protective jacket over their bodies. The jackets have hoodies.

"Cover your heads with your hoodies. Those spiders are poisonous." When Marx saw that the two had already protected their heads, he passed a torch to Amaya. He knew Amaya had them inside her backpack but it would be too late for her to dig them out.

The three had a tacit understanding. They had each other’s back and they should be able to cover all the angles. They used their weapons at the same time. In a span of 5 minutes, the many spiders that surrounded them became a pile of black hairy mess on the ground.

No sooner did they let out a sigh of relief when more spiders attacked them from different directions. The spiders were very angry and more aggressive. They spewed out cobwebs that targeted the weapons on the human’s hands and tried to cover the nozzle with their webs.

But what can the cobwebs do? No matter how thick those were, the webs were no match to the fury of the heat from the torch and the laser.

The dead spiders continued to pile up around the three horses. The horses were so disgusted by the smell that assailed their noses that they lifted their front hooves and neighed angrily.

Marx was getting worried. He looked at the torch in his hand. It will not take some time for the battery to be exhausted.

A shrill sound filled the air and the spiders who were attacking withdrew and crawled toward where the sound came from.
