Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 583: A Risk ()
"Veah...to reinforce the barrier directly is a risk, it has never been done in such a manner."
"The barrier was erected with ties to the Quarter foil for a reason. Channeling gems refine and amplify Fae magic, without it, pure Fae magic is nature centered and unreliable. Do you think it will work as we want it to?" Everon asked Neveah quietly.
Lord Eldowin had already left to carry out his orders and Neveah was now left to her thoughts, with Everon alone by her side.
Neveah already knew, that pure Fae magic would possibly have adverse effects on the barrier in the long run, but the long run could only be considered after this trouble had passed.
The barrier was slowly losing its glow, it needed to feed, just like anything else that was dependent on magic. If channeling magic directly into the barrier could retain it for even a moment longer, then it was worth the risk.
"Everything...is a risk now, Everon. Everything..." Neveah murmured quietly, clenching her trembling hands into tight fists.
Neveah’s gaze trailed the group of fairies flying out to the barrier, their spectral wings glinted as they went separate ways, taking up positions at different points on the barrier.
There was still a gaping tear in the sky, though the void space had already crashed down, and a tumultuous weather slowly kicked up, whooshing winds and lightning strike.
Fierce growls of thunder rumbled in the sky, creating a horrid cacophony when merged with the screeching shadow beasts.
The canyon was eating even deeper into the earth just as rapidly as it was growing wider, the sound of the cracking and breaking earth echoing for a far distance,
Another batch of shock waves was imminent, it was either the barrier crashed or it would hold.
If the barrier crashed, the canyon would eat away at the Earth up till the wall of the Light Hall, perhaps the wall would end its advance, perhaps it would cave in and the canyon would get beyond the Light Hall to the City Wall.
If the City Wall also fell, the canyon would be upon Dune City. Neveah had not given the order to evacuate, everything had begun too suddenly, there was no time.
’Would it hold?’ Neveah wondered.
Though Neveah kept on a calm facade, within her, Neveah’s insides churned with anxiety.
Hundreds of life...no, thousands were at stake. All these people, Neveah had watched them live their life in peace in this past year, having no inclination that such a day would ever come.
’If the canyon gets to Dune city...if such a thing happens...it will be the end, of all father built and worked so hard for...’ Neveah thought.
’We have to do, whatever it takes.’ Neveah thought, her fists now clenched so tightly that her knuckles turned white.
’Veah, what you are contemplating...’ Neveah’s wolf began but trailed off.
’Fine, if it gets to that, we do what we have to.’ Neveah’s wolf was about to protest but decided against it.
"Veah...do not tell me you plan to..." Everon trailed off.
It took Everon a moment to read the double meaning in Neveah’s statement.
’Everything was a risk’, it meant at this time, there was no need for any more reservations.
There was no need to hold anything back, not when thousands of lives were at stake.
"Veah, you can’t!" Everon exclaimed in horror.
Neveah did not respond or acknowledge Everon’s exclamation, she kept her gaze fixed ahead, watching for the deciding moment.
Everon moved forwards and took hold of Neveah’s shoulder, turning Neveah around to face him.
"Veah, listen to me...you know what this means, how much you have been warned against it, do not do anything rash... you could be in danger!" Everon exclaimed, shaking Neveah’s shoulders lightly in a bid to shake sense into her.
"If Dune City falls...if I fail to protect the people in this short period my father entrusted his oath to me, how can I face my father? The dune dragons? His Grace? Xenon?." Neveah asked blankly.
"Neveah!" Everon exclaimed in disbelief.
Neveah lifted a hand to gently pry Everon’s hands off her shoulders.
"Everon, I will not make a rash decision. I will not do anything, unless it is absolutely necessary...if it is the only way we have left to protect the city... only then will I take such a step."
"I also hope...that it does not have to come to that." Neveah murmured quietly.
Everon lowered his gaze in frustration but he also knew that Neveah’s words were right, the safety of the city came first before any self preservation.
The fairies had arrived at the barrier and taken up position just as the next batch of shock waves hit, spreading rapidly.
The earth trembled violently, the tremors spreading as far as the wall of the Light Hall.
Neveah clung to the edge of the wall, watching as the shock waves hit the barrier constantly.
The Fae were right on the other side of it, channeling magic into the barrier to keep it standing.
Neveah knew they would do all it took, they were right at the center of the danger. If the barrier crashed, the canyon would head straight for them and Fae flight was not nearly as excellent as Dragon flight,
Their wings were far too weak for the tumultuous weather the canyon carried with it.
Wave after wave of tremors spread, the earth trembled violently almost every few minutes but eventually, the tremors grew weaker and weaker.
"It is closing up." Everon said to Neveah, gesturing to the rip in the sky.
Neveah released a breath she had not even realized she was holding. As the rip closed up, the clapping thunder came to an end, as did the whooshing winds and even the sound of the Earth caving in came to a stop abruptly.
The sky was once again clear and visible, and Neveah looked on ahead, for as far as her eyesight allowed but there was nothing.
"I don’t see Coran and Garron..." Neveah said slowly, turning to Everon.
Everon had also realized it and his brows were furrowed.
"The Dune dragons at the barrier have also lost sight of them." Everon reported warily. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
"I have to go out there myself." Neveah said, leaving no room for arguments.
