Chapter 548: A Strength (Ch.549)

Neveah breathed a quiet sigh, she was not certain what exactly to say in response to King Jian’s words, she had not imagined he would have such worries also.

"Lord River’s convictions are not your responsibility, Your Grace." Neveah reminded.

"And Lord River is a respected elder, even here in the Dunes, there must be something more to it than we presently know of. Nothing is for certain yet."

"In my father’s absence, the Dunes are my responsibility. Recovering Fort Blazed is the most urgent...as for the internal affairs, leave them to me and the Dune dragons." Neveah said in a more serious tone.

King Jian nodded slowly, consenting to Neveah’s words.

"All squadrons are on standby awaiting Kaideon’s news and Xenon will return soon after inspecting the state of the barrier. But you must know, Menarx makes flight for the Dunes as we speak... accompanied by his lady." King Jian revealed to Neveah.

Neveah did not react to King Jian’s revelation, she had already anticipated this much...be it for the Light Hall or Fort Blazed, Menarx would have to be summoned.

"I will have the Dune dragons prepare to receive them." Neveah finally said with a nod.

King Jian studied Neveah’s expression, finding her reaction or lack of it concerning.

"Are you truly okay with it, Veah? Be honest with me." King Jian asked.

"I am fine, I will have to cross paths with him one day or the next, this much is clear to me. And his expertise is needed here, I will not stand in the way of that." Neveah stated.

"It is late and you have been out here for a while, you should get some rest." Neveah suggested to King Jian.

"It is of no matter...I will not be able to find sleep in any case." King Jian replied quietly.

"Even so, the moment my father’s word arrives...if it is as we have guessed, then the days here in the dunes will cease to be as quiet and peaceful as they are now." Neveah murmured, gazing down at the city.

Neveah could not help the apprehension settled in her heart, if it came down to recovering Fort Blazed, the only place that could serve as base for the dragon forces and still be within reach of the dark lands was right here...in the White Dunes.

Tons of dragons would march on the city, and they would take on the dangers beyond the barrier, but where did that leave the common people of Dune City?

Right in the midst of everything, between the powers that would surely counterattack out in the dark lands and the dragons who would certainly never back down till Fort Blazed was recovered.

"You should rest as much as you can, now at least." Neveah added.

"The Dunes will not be overrun in the crossfire, Veah. This is also one of my fortresses, I will not put it in harm’s way." King Jian assured Neveah.

"No...you do what you must to save Fort Blazed, a year is a long time... you have held back long enough." Neveah replied instead.

"If you find the guest quarters unsuitable, then rest in my quarters... I do not know about much else, but I certainly have the most comfortable bed in the Dune Castle." Neveah changed the topic to something more lighthearted.

King Jian passed Neveah a look, tilting his head to the side.

"Shall I consider this an invite...to spend the night together?" King Jian asked directly.

Neveah choked on air, breaking into a coughing fit.

She coughed violently whilst King Jian patted her back, chuckling quietly to himself in amusement.

"I guess not." King Jian answered his question for himself, rubbing Neveah’s back to ease her.

"Please do not say things like that out in the open." Neveah lamented.

"This is a very different side from the woman I had in my arms earlier today..." King Jian pointed out, drawing Neveah’s mind to the meeting hall.

"Are you going to rest? Or not?" Neveah asked, stepping away from King Jian’s reach with an aggrieved expression.

"You are so concerned for my well being, how can I refuse? Lead the way." King Jian said, a small smile on his lips.

Neveah complied, swallowing down whatever words she had to say in protest.

If she dared deny King Jian, he would find his own way to force a confession out of her once again.

Neveah returned into her father’s office and shut the doors of the balcony, locking them up.

She turned, not surprised to find King Jian by her father’s desk, glancing over all the reports she had laid out on it.

"You have been busy. Will you be able to see it through... before Menarx arrives?" King Jian asked Neveah.

"You do not wish for Lord River to see Menarx?" Neveah asked, walking over to King Jian.

She tidied up the reports on her father’s desk and stored them away, leaving aside just a few that she would take along with her.

"Narx is my brother, I know what he is capable of. Guilty or not, no man gets through Menarx and remains as he was...his skill lies in breaking not just the body but the mind also." King Jian said.

"Menarx will get me the truth without fail...but as Narx would always say to me..."

"A man I have entrusted to him is a man I have condemned to death, regardless of what results Narx provides." King Jian answered Neveah truthfully.

"I will see it through, before Menarx arrives. And if I cannot do so, then your methods will be the right path...if Lord River stands in the way of keeping the people of the Dunes safe, in this alone, he has already failed you." Neveah said to King Jian.

"You have known him for a year, many would plead for his life to me... ask me to save him and pardon his sins." King Jian pointed out.

"I am not a sentimental woman, Jian. Those who have done wrong should be punished for it..." Neveah murmured, gesturing to the door.

"And I will never put you in a difficult position for my personal interests, just because you would grant my requests... I will be a strength to you, Jian...not a weakness." Neveah clarified.
