Chapter 489: Lock Down (Ch.490)

Neveah stood at the top of the city wall, staring down over the city. The streets were completely vacated, save for the city guards patrolling the streets.

It had been a swift and efficient effort and the citizens had also been perfectly compliant, it was one of the reasons Neveah loved the Dune City.

The citizens and dragon kind truly had an understanding, they were interdependent and though there would be concerns here or there, when it came down to it, there was mutual trust shared between dragon kind and the citizens.

Up above, three dragon lords circled the perimeter, keeping watch over the city. It was humbling to Neveah how this was the standard emergency procedure.

The safety of the people was just as important to the dragon lords as the barrier, the light hall and the Asvarian beacon was.

"Lieutenant Vairheac, everything is in order." The commander of the city guard reported to Neveah.

Neveah nodded in approval, in this way, if the fight got too close to the city itself, the citizens would still be out of the way.

"How long has it been now?" Neveah asked absent mindedly.

"An hour, lieutenant." The commander of city guard reported.

"An hour..." Neveah murmured.

It was already an hour since the horns were sounded, an entire hour and yet there was no word from the squad that flew South or the barrier.

The Asvarian Beacon and light hall were both under close watch and the fairies were putting their best effort to reinforce the barrier.

The barrier was also guarded by Lord Orin’s team and there had been no further breach in this time.

But there was still no word on what had become of the first two breaches.

The sound of the horns had died out too, and with the bustling day interrupted so suddenly, the entire city was in an eerie silence...too silent.

It was only an hour but it felt much longer than that to Neveah, and she watched from the city wall, strumming her fingers against the concrete on which her hands were rested.

Neveah’s mind was drawn out of her thoughts when a city guard hurried up to her.

Neveah picked up on the hurried footsteps long before they got to her and she passed a glance over her shoulder, not surprised to see it was the city guard who had manned the gates earlier in the day,

The very one she had left in charge of interrogating the merchant who smuggled the adamantium weapons under the guise of a merchant caravan.

"Lieutenant Vairheac... the prisoner...he escaped." The city guard reported to Neveah in a grim tone.

Neveah’s brows furrowed slightly, there were many prisoners in the city guard base but Neveah did know the prisoner in question was the merchant.

"He was under your custody, how did he get away?" Neveah asked in a dark tone.

"With the city being under lockdown, the interrogation was halted and I ordered for his transfer back to the cells...on the way back, he made use of a magical item hidden in his possession." The city guard reported.

The city guard presented a small cloth, unwrapping it to reveal the portal shards in them.

"Jump portal." Neveah murmured, her brows furrowed in annoyance.

When it came to magical artifacts, they were not easily acquired as the creation of such items consumed too much magic.

However, they were variables that could not be avoided and Neveah knew the city guard would be helpless against a portal artifact, if they did not get out of the way, they would be sucked in as well.

"How could the artifact escape your notice? This is how you do your job?" Neveah asked, her tone dark.

"Forgive me, I will give chase immediately. Given the nature of the portal shards, it could not have a far effect range. I have come to request permission to lead a unit out of the city before he gets too far." The city guard requested, his head bowed.

"You know the city gates are to remain closed till the dragon troops send word. And all units must remain on standby...we cannot spare a unit to give chase." Neveah said with a frown.

"And he must have known that too, he chose the perfect time to get away. Any other time and we would have caught him back with no trouble at all." Neveah murmured.

"But Lieutenant, the merchant is the only source of information into the trade of adamantium...if we lose him, we might not get another opportunity to track down the trade." The city guard said in concern. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

"Don’t I know it?" Neveah murmured.

Neveah ran a hand through her hair in annoyance, the trade of adamantium weapons had been left to her jurisdiction.

It was a highly sensitive case and Neveah did not need anyone to tell her this, she had seen what adamantium could do to an all powerful dragon for herself.

Neveah glanced up at the sky, it did not seem like word was coming soon and the city was at maximum security.

"You handle things here, I will track him." Neveah decided, referring to the commander of the city guard.

"Lieutenant, just you alone?" The commander of city guard asked in concern.

"City defence cannot be compromised for any reason, the safety of the citadel and its people come first...all units have already been assigned."

"Besides...it would take a team of city guards, but I alone will be more than enough." Neveah said.

The city guards could not argue with Neveah’s words, she was not human like most of them. She was a wolf shifter and further more, a light blood.

"I will have them open the gates." The commander of the city guard conceded.

"Not necessary." Neveah said dismissively.

Without another word, Neveah leapt over the towering city wall, much to the horror of the city guards, she shifted mid air so she landed on her paws.

Neveah sniffed the air for a moment before she shot off into the woods.
