Chapter 488: Interrupted (Ch.489)

"She was a woman I dearly loved, so much that I was blind to everything else. To how she had subtly sowed discord between I and my brothers... how we could no longer see eye to eye on anything."

"Jian in particular... the person I value the most, I could barely stand him anymore. Try as they did, all I wanted to do was get away with her... for her." Xenon murmured.

He was quiet for a moment, the thought of his actions shameful to him even at this time.

Neveah did not interrupt Xenon, she let him linger in his silence for as long as it pleased him before he continued.

"I could see nothing else but that, and without a doubt, my brothers loathed it...loathed her..." Xenon’s words were interrupted by the loud, resonating sound of a battle horn.

The deafening blast of the horn cut through the peaceful atmosphere like a sharp blade, a powerful, resonating sound that seemed to come from every direction, all at once, further amplified by magic.

The sound of that battle horn was one Neveah recognised immediately and her eyes widened as she jumped to her feet.

"The light hall! That horn is from the light hall!" Neveah exclaimed.

Neveah could not forget the sound of this horn, she had awoken to it on the first morning of her arrival at the White Dunes, but even then...it had not been so deafening, it had not carried on for this long.

Back then, Neveah learnt the horn had meant the light of the Asvarian beacon had dimmed, and the barrier was weakened and would require protection till the fairies of the light hall could reinforce it.

It was a call for immediate deployment of a squad of dragon lords to man the barrier till it was strengthened again.

But Neveah had also learnt when the sound of the horn carried on for much longer and resonated much louder, it meant something different entirely.

Xenon’s brows narrowed slightly and he also rose up to his feet. Before either of them could say a word, the mighty dragon of midnight blue scales that was Lord Kaideon came into view.

Kaideon dipped down, banking his wings slightly, he shifted to his human form and landed to his feet right before Neveah and Xenon.

"Lord Xenon." Kaideon greeted, lowering his head to a small bow.

"Father... the horn..." Neveah asked.

"The light of the Asvarian beacon faltered. A small gap was created in the barrier and there has been a breach. It is said a shadow beast broke through and flew due south." Kaideon reported immediately.

"My enforcers are already on it’s tail, we will give chase and cut it off before it causes any harm. Orin will take charge of barrier defence and prevent any further breach." Kaideon was in full battle lord mode.

"Veah, rally your forces and ensure the safety of the citadel. All citizens must retreat indoors, keep the panic at bay as much as you can, you know what to do." Kaideon passed Neveah her instructions.

"Of course, father. At once." Neveah accepted the order immediately.

Kaideon’s gaze moved back to Xenon and just at that moment, a terrifying shriek sounded from a distant, originating from the direction of the barrier.

"A second breach!" Kaideon hissed.

"Go south, leave this to me." Xenon ordered.

Kaideon complied immediately, patting Neveah’s shoulder, he turned and took off in the way he had come, disappearing through the clouds in an instant.

"Xenon..." Neveah said, unsure of why her heart was so tight in apprehension.

"Hush love, your man is the most powerful dragon lord in the stronghold...a shadow beast is nothing." Xenon assured Neveah, he leaned forward and placed a light kiss on her forehead.

Xenon pulled away, a reassuring smile on his lips, before he turned and broke into a swift dash, with a leap, the mighty black dragon shot up into the sky the next moment, heading in the direction the second breach had occurred.

Neveah was left, passing a final look in both directions.

"Father and Xenon are both the finest warriors...it is just a shadow beast." Neveah murmured to herself.

Neveah shifted, her wolf form was the swiftest way to get back to the citadel, and there was no time for delay.

Neveah dashed for the citadel, taking the fastest route through the woods, she arrived at the citadel in a short time where the city guard and castle guards were already marching through the streets.

The horn still echoed through the streets, warning the citizens of the imminent danger and up above, dragon troops soared past, making flight for the barrier to take guard.

Other dragon troops headed for the Asvarian Beacon and the light hall which would be securely guarded till the threat passed.

And there were those dragon troops forming perimeters around the citadel itself.

Neveah bounded up to the commander of the city guard.

"Lieutenant." The city guard commander greeted as Neveah shifted back to her human form.

"The dragon perimeter is secure around the citadel. Our job is to ensure the people do not get caught in the crossfire and the panic is kept within control."

"The city guard is to be split into five units. The first two units of the city guard will man the streets, break up every gathering and have the people return to the safety of their homes until the threat is neutralized." Neveah instructed.

"The third and fourth units, man the city walls and the city gates. I want the city walls fully armed with the crossbow division of the non dragon armed force... just in case."

"Arrows may not kill the shadow beasts, but it will slow them down long enough, if it comes to that." Neveah continued as she strode through the streets of the Dune City with the commander of city guard and a battalion in tow.

As Neveah gave the orders, they were immediately executed. Each unit heading off to carry out their assigned duty.

"Castle guard, double the security in the armory, treasure hall and memorial halls. Shut the castle gates and keep it shut till further orders." Neveah instructed castle guard.

"I want this city under complete lockdown and I want it done now!" Neveah ordered firmly.
