Chapter 64: Chapter 64: A Blizzard Chase (III)

Kael sprinted through the snowy forest without slowing down. He sneered as Jojo’s scent remained strong in the air, making it easy for him to track the boy down.

He was genuinely surprised. He had expected that woman to have gone much farther.

But judging by the intensity of the scent, he was already closing in.

’So, while I was tormenting that damned tiger, she only managed to get this far?’ Kael pondered as he caught sight of the woman’s back in the distance. ’Does she not realize she’ll freeze to death if she slows down even a little?’

’That damned tiger called her Sisi... what a strange name,’ Kael thought. Then it occurred to him that he had named his own son "Jojo."

’I suppose we aren’t so different after all.’

’But at least Jojo’s name has a meaning,’ he continued pondering. ’I doubt Sisi does. Maybe she has a real name she hides—just like I did with Jojo...’

Then, Kael snapped out of his daze.

’What am I thinking? I’m going to kill this woman. Why should I give a damn about her name?’

He scolded himself for that moment of weakness. He was merely curious about the woman who had somehow bent his son into obedience.

And yet, seeing her lonely figure, her small body bracing against the blizzard with stubborn determination, put a dent in his cold heart.

Kael had been ready to pounce and pin her down immediately, but the sight of her made his body hesitate. Without realizing it, he slowed... until he came to a complete halt.

He watched her continue to flee, unaware of his presence. He was only a few feet behind her now, but she was too focused on escaping to notice the cursed wolf stalking her.

As he stared, he realized she truly looked... lonely.

Like a single flower that had somehow survived winter, unsure when it would finally wither in the freezing cold, yet still struggling to bloom.

Kael had never felt even an ounce of pity since accepting the Dusk Star curse, and this woman was the first.

But it was also a pity that he had to kill her.

She was Marik’s woman. And just like him, she must have abused Jojo and twisted his mind until he rejected his own father.

Kael took a deep breath, hardening his heart and extinguishing the last shred of sympathy within him.

He had planned to strike from behind and incapacitate her, but hesitation won out in the end.

Instead, he opened his mouth and declared,

"You can’t run anymore. Stop right there and give me my son."

Sisi froze.

She instinctively glanced over her shoulder and nearly screamed when she saw a massive black wolf with crimson eyes staring at her like prey.

At that moment, Sisi knew Marik must already be dead, and she would be next.

But her greatest fear wasn’t for herself.

It was Jojo.

’What will happen to Jojo if I’m caught by this cursed wolf?’ that thought crossed her mind, and it made her adrenaline surged.

As her adrenaline kicked in, she ran as fast as she could to escape the black wolf.

"You—damn it!" Kael snarled as he gave chase. "Just give it up! You’re no match for me!"

Sisi ignored him.

Instead, she poured all her remaining mental strength into sensing every branch and vine around her and commanded them to move.

Kael was startled when living vines burst from the ground and wrapped around his feet.

They moved with intent, as if sharing a single purpose controlled by the woman in front of him.

He immediately realized this was the trick she had used to catch Grishaw off guard.

So he dodged skillfully, but the vines kept coming, one after another, they erupted from the earth. Branches and trees followed, moving in unison, all twisting together to restrain him—

And they succeeded.

Kael was bound at all four limbs. The vines tightened with terrifying strength, twisting as if trying to crush his bones.

Still, as the Dusk Star, he could break free with minimal effort.

He simply hadn’t.

Because he was stunned.

’She’s a witch,’ Kael concluded.

He was well-versed in the creatures of the Roc Forest. Only two beings could command plants so freely; faeries and witches.

Faeries held greater control over plans as they were nature’s sprites.

Witches, however... could rival them as long as they paid enough sacrifice in exchange of greater power.

Judging by her level of control, his suspicion was all but confirmed that she was a powerful witch that had sacrificed a lot of beastmen and humans.

After all, it was impossible for her to be a faerie, as they were tiny sprites meant to be untouchable and kind. They could make mischief, but killing using the plants were not something a faerie could do.

Meanwhile, this woman had actually had the intention to kill by breaking his bones and strangling him with these vines!

’Hah. No wonder she’s that damned tiger’s woman,’ Kael thought grimly. ’Both of them are evil—that’s why they belong together.’

’And she’s been beside Jojo for far too long. Who knows how she’s poisoned his mind.’

Kael scoffed at himself for pitying her before. He thought she looked like a lonely winter flower, beautiful, yet resilient, an attractive sight for all men, including Kael.

’No wonder she so attractive. She must’ve killed too many woman to make herself beautiful,’ he sneered.

Anger surged as he laughed bitterly at his own foolishness.

"Enough. This ends now," Kael said, inhaling deeply—

CRACK! CRACK!

He tore through the vines with brute force and strode forward, swaggering toward the woman who could no longer run.

He shifted back into his beastman form and seized Sisi by the arm, gripping tightly until she gasped in pain.

Sisi felt that her vision was spinning. She had exhausted herself, pouring too much mental strength into controlling the forest, and now, her consciousness wavered.

But when she felt a crushing grip from the cursed wolf, instinct forced her awake.

She twisted violently, trying to break free from him, and Kael scoffed before letting go.

As he let go, she finally collapsed.

Yet even as she fell, she turned at the last moment, landing on her arm, so Jojo wouldn’t be hurt.

"Give it up, you witch. You have no escape."

The blizzard was still strong, and the wind made it hard to hear, but Kael’s words echoed in her brain and forced her to look up.

There.

She saw his crimson eyes again, now devoid of kindness.
