Chapter 65: Chapter 65: Little Wolf’s Protection

Kael’s dark, suppressive aura leaked from his body, making her—and even Jojo—tremble in response.

There was no trace of kindness in his crimson eyes. He was no different from a man-eating beast at this point, and Sisi refused to let Jojo go, knowing the grim fate awaiting him in the hands of his own "father."

"You’ve done enough harm to my son, woman. Just so you know, I will skin that damned tiger and cut off his head. I’ll hang his head and hide in front of my kingdom as a warning to those who dare kidnap my son again," Kael stated coldly, sending shivers down her spine. "And you... will face the same punishment. Consider it an honor to die by your man’s side."

Sisi began to imagine the torture that she and Marik would endure before death, and her body visibly shook.

She had been resilient through the various torments inflicted by Mr. Piker, and life in the orphanage had never been easy. But hearing exactly how she would die was too much for her to bear.

For the first time since leaving the orphanage, Sisi’s eyes reddened. She tried to hold back her tears as she didn’t want to show weakness in front of Jojo, but she couldn’t.

She was too scared, and also unwilling to part with the beautiful life she had with Jojo.

Her tears began to fall as she grabbed the dagger from her pouch and, with trembling hands, aimed it at Kael.

At first she held it with one hand, but her grip shook so badly that she had to clutch the dagger with both hands as she cried out in desperation.

"I-I—I will never give him to you. You are not his father!"

She stammered at first, but managed to finish her sentence in the end. Though her voice was cracked, and she neither sounded nor looked intimidating.

Nevertheless, she made her stance clear despite her fear.

Her tears continued to fall, some of them dripping onto Jojo’s head.

Jojo had been forcing his eyes shut, even when he heard his father’s voice. He kept telling himself that this wasn’t his father—that it was a child-eating demon wearing his face. So he remained silent and still despite Sisi’s struggle, hoping he wouldn’t become a burden while they were running away.

But when Sisi’s tears soaked into the top of his head, Jojo involuntarily looked up, and saw her crying.

The sight of her tears struck him with a shock as he had never seen Sisi cry like this.

He remembered her shedding tears in her sleep back at the farm with the evil fat man, when she was in pain, but she had never cried so openly, so completely broken and desperate.

That image was enough for the little wolf cub to leap out of the pelt without hesitation.

He faced the crimson-eyed demon before him and shifted into his beastman form.

Jojo’s eyes were also pooled with tears. He was terrified of the demon in front of him, but seeing Sisi cry was enough to give him courage to face even a demon with the size of a mountain!

His father had once told him that even a child could face a demon, as long as he had someone he wanted to protect.

Jojo hadn’t understood back then.

Why would he ever need to face a demon when his father could protect him from everything?

But now he knew.

He knew he had to protect Sisi. Even if he was no match for the demon, even if that demon wore his father’s face.

"Jojo will face you, demon! Don’t hurt Sisi anymore!" Jojo declared as he tried to unsheathe claws that weren’t yet sharp enough to tear a pelt.

"Jojo! No!" Sisi dropped her dagger immediately and tried to pull him behind her.

But Jojo stayed rooted in place, staring up at the demon wearing his father’s face, continuing to provoke him.

"You—You are not my Daddy! You’re just a demon wearing his face! He would never make Sisi cry!" Jojo sobbed, tears streaming down his cheeks, yet he refused to move. "Y-you demon! Give me back my Daddy! I promised Sisi that Daddy would take us home and feed us! Not you!"

...

Kael felt conflicted when he saw the woman cry.

He liked to believe he wasn’t completely heartless. But he also wasn’t the kind of man who treated women differently. Man or woman, obedience to him would earn them leniency and reward, while defiance earned punishment or death.

Yet when this woman trembled, crying as she held the dagger, a sharp pain pierced his chest.

It made him uncomfortable as guilt began to fill his empty heart.

Seeing her cry made him felt like he had committed an unforgivable sin, even though all he had done was ensure she wouldn’t dare run again. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

He hadn’t even tortured her yet.

’They say a woman’s tears are potent poison to men,’ Kael thought as his gaze followed the tears slipping from the corner of her eyes down her cheeks. ’I thought that was nonsense... until now.’

He fell into a daze as the tears continued to fall, and once again, his resolve weakened.

’Maybe I was too harsh,’ he thought. ’Maybe my threat frightened her that much.’

For a fleeting moment, he considered sparing her torture, granting her a swift death instead as an act of mercy.

But all of that vanished the instant Jojo leapt out of the pelt and shifted into a four-year-old beastman.

It had been almost a year since Kael had seen his son in beastman form, and the changes were obvious.

Jojo was no longer as chubby, nor were his eyes timid.

Instead, they burned with a fury only a protective beastman could possess, a sign that he had truly accepted this woman as his own.

And then came the provocation—words no four-year-old should ever speak to his own father:

"Jojo will face you, demon! Don’t hurt Sisi anymore!"
