Craved by the Wrong Volkov-Chapter 367: The accident
Lucien’s POV
Something about it didn’t sit right with me.
Raphael agreeing to the divorce that easily felt off in a way I couldn’t quite place. He was not the type to fold easily, not when it came to power and certainly not when it came to Braelyn. His possesiveness over her was terrifying. The offer I gave him was generous, but not enough to make a man like him step aside quietly.
I never expected him to accept. The goal was to push him to act reckless.
My grip tightened slightly around my phone as I rubbed my temples just thinking about. I had security planted secretly around the registry in case he played something stupid like abducting Lynn yet the feeling of unease knotted my stomach. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
My assistant shifted in the passenger seat and glanced back at me through the mirror. He noticed my troubled expression. "Sir, is everything alright?" he asked carefully. "If you are not feeling well, we can reschedule." he politely suggested.
I waved him off without looking up. "Keep driving." I instructed. Maybe I was just overthinking.
The car slowed as we approached an T junction, eventually coming to a stop. My attention lifted from the screen when I realised we were not moving.
Ahead of us, a delivery truck sat awkwardly across the road, its back doors open with boxes scattered everywhere. A motorcycle was also packed ahead. Two men stood at the scene arguing loudly, from the look of things it might escalate soon.
"What is happening?" I asked, my tone sharpening slightly. I didn’t like the look of things.
The driver leaned forward a bit, trying to get a better view. "Looks like a dispute, sir. Probably an accident." he replied.
I didn’t respond immediately. Instead, I watched the scene closely. Something about it felt wrong. It was too perfectly placed and convenient that the road was completely blocked with no clear way through and we were at an intersection a car could come from any direction.
A quiet unease settled in my chest. "Pull out immediately," I said following my gut
The driver didn’t argue. "Alright sir.." he immediately started to pull out, before he could finish, a car pulled up behind us screeching to a sudden stop blocking the exit. The rest happened in a blur starting with the deafening horn.
My gaze shifted to the side mirror just as a loud horn blasted from the right. I turned my head instinctively and saw it. A car speeding straight toward us. Too fast to brake. My hand rushed to the seat belt but it was already too late.
The incoming car slammed into the right side of the car. The force shoved us violently sideways, metal grinding against metal as the world tilted. My body jerked with the collision, my head snapping back as everything blurred.
The last thing I registered was the sound of glass shattering and the shards hitting me from different directions as something lunge into my stomach before everything went black.
*******
The sharp smell of antiseptic pulled me back first. It cut through the haze in my head, followed by a dull ringing that refused to fade. I drew in a sharp breath as my eyes opened, the ceiling above me coming into view slowly.
For a moment, I just stared, trying to orient myself. The door opened and a nurse stepped in, her expression ws neutral until her eyes landed on me. She froze for a second before rushing out.
"Doctor!" she called out urgently. My brows pulled together.
I pushed myself up slightly, a low groan escaping me as pain spread through my body. It settled mostly around my abdomen and head. My hand moved instinctively, pressing against my stomach where I felt the bandaging beneath my fingers.
Moments later, the doctor walked in quickly with another nurse behind him. He didn’t waste a second to check on me.."Mr Volkov, can you hear me?" he asked, already checking my pupils with a small light.
"I can hear you," I replied, my tone was a bit irritated.
He continued his checks while the nurses too note. "Move your arms." I did without much trouble. "Your legs." I shifted slightly, ignoring the discomfort.
After a few more tests, he nodded with a satisfied expression. "You are recovering well. There are no fractures, only injuries from the surgery, a shard was driven into your stomach. You were fortunate in a way." he informed
I didn’t comment on that. My attention shifted elsewhere. " What about my driver and assistant condition?" I said. "They were in the car with me."
The doctor nodded and gave me a quick run down, "Your driver is stable. The impact did not hit his side directly, but he sustained some internal injuries. He managed to pull both you and your assistant out of the car before it caught fire. He collapsed shortly after."
My expression remained neutral, but my jaw tightened slightly. "As for your assistant, he took the first hit. His left arm is broken, and he is still unconscious, but he is not in critical condition."
I nodded once, taking it in. A breath of relief escaped me before I realised. Then my gaze darkened. "Was the accident investigated?" I asked.
The doctor hesitated slightly before continuing. "I am not certain about the full details, but I heard that by the time emergency services arrived, only your vehicle was present. Surveillance in that area is also limited."
A faint, humourless chuckle left me. That explained enough. The perfect accident. My gaze lowered briefly as I replayed the sequence in my head. The blocked road, the car behind us, the incoming vehicle, everything was coordinated.
"Did anyone come for me?" I asked after a moment, wondering how Lynn handled the news.
"Yes," the doctor replied. "A family member. He handled the bills and signed the emergency consent forms. We have already informed him that you are awake."
My brows drew together slightly. "He?" I repeated. My emergency contact was changed from Gregory to Braelyn recently and she is clearly a she. Male family member, was if Ronan or Raphael.
A bad feeling hit me, Raphael came to my mind. Raphael was with Lynn at the registry when the call came in but why didn’t Lynn come herself
