Chapter 51: I’m not getting paid enough for this

Valerie stared at the dress on Lucy’s body. As much as she wanted to rip the dress off her body, she decided to let it go.

A dress was just a dress. Right now, there was a serious matter to see.

She turned to the lady and the two guys standing next to her and said,

"Hey, move over. I need to use the phone. You don’t want to be the reason I cause a scene, do you?" With these words, the lady immediately stepped aside and Valerie walked past them towards the telephone.

Lucy was surprised that Valerie did not react as she expected. She did not react at the sight of the dress on her body and it made her wonder if the dress hadn’t been hers in the first place.

Well, there was still the other thing.

Valerie got to the telephone and dialed Max’s number from memory.

"Hello, who is this and how did you get my number?" Valerie flinched.

Max’s voice... He sounded so cold and distant. He had never even spoken to her with such a tone when he was angry. Was this how he spoke to other people?

"It’s me, Valerie." She said, and Max switched his tone immediately.

"Valerie?" He took the phone from his ear and looked at the number. It was a landline. "How come you’re using a landline? What happened to your phone?"

"I left my phone in the car. Please, you have to hold on to it for me. It’s important." She said and he nodded.

Judging from her tone, it seemed her phone was indeed important. Were there secrets in them?

"By the way, how did you remember my number?" He asked but she immediately made an excuse to evade that question.

"Max, I have to go. Something came up." She said and cut the call.

"Wow, she dares to cut the call." Max said and put down his phone. "I’m curious though. What is she doing now?" He folded his arms and leaned back on his chair. "Hm, probably causing havoc."

"Ahem." Tom cleared his throat, reminding Max that he needed to continue his work if not they were both going to spend the night in the office.

"I hear you. I’ll just make this last phone call." He said, and Tom ended up breaking the pen in his hand. That was the level of frustration he was at.

Max called the driver and told him to bring the phone to him but strangely, the driver said Steven had collected the phone and said he would give it to Max himself.

"What?" Max exclaimed.

"I’m sorry, sir. But I could not refuse him." The driver said and Max cut the call. He gritted his teeth in anger. Why would Steven take the phone?

’It seems there are valuables in that phone. I can’t let Steven get his hands on them.’ he thought and fled against Tom’s pleas and Tom was left to take care of the things left.

"I’m not getting paid enough for this." He complained.

Valerie put back the telephone and turned to the guests who had been secretly watching her all along but were now pretending to mind their own business.

She trusts Max enough to leave her phone’s business with him.

For now, she needed a drink.

As soon as she arrived at the dessert table, a guy approached her with a drink in his hand and said,

"You’re a fine lady." He looked like he was there to flirt with her but his moves were rather clumsy and though he was good-looking, he couldn’t hold a candle to Max.

"And you’re a fine man but you’re in my space so could you move a bit?" She requested but he wanted to come on to her so she took a step back.

"Come on, don’t be shy. I know your type." He suddenly said, moving closer to her. "You can’t wait to get your hands on a man."

"Excuse you." Valerie said and glared with a threatening gaze. "If you don’t fuck off right this moment, I think I might just create a scene. How about it?"

"You wouldn’t." He said and she turned around. She had no time for a pervert like him. But this pervert suddenly took a mouthful of his drink, pulled Valerie to himself and kissed her, transferring his drink to her and forcefully making her drink it.

It was utterly disgusting and she pushed him away. She slapped him but it wasn’t enough. So she took a wine bottle and broke it on his head.

She had this deadly look in her eyes as she watched him groan in pain and she said,

"How dare you try to come on to me? You clearly have a death wish." She said and her aunt Victoria approached.

"Valerie, you bitch. Can’t you just stay quiet for once?" She asked and Valerie pointed at her with the broken bottle in her hand.

"You be quiet." She said and tossed the bottle aside. ’Ugh, this is the worst. I just had to be kissed by a stranger. What did he feed me? I need to throw up right away. Something tells me these people have a hand in it.’

Valerie made her way through the guests and headed upstairs to her room while Lucy snickered since everything was going according to her plan. For once.

Valerie arrived at her room and hoped to see Frankie inside at least.

She opened the door and was hit by a strange stench. It was unfamiliar and disgusting. What was it?

She entered her room and called out to Frankie.

"Frankie? Are you here?"

She walked in and switched on the lights. Lo and behold, the strange stench she had smelled as soon as she entered the room was from the end of the room.

And at the end of the room were dozens of life-size dolls all covered in what seemed to be red paint resembling blood, but not all of them were dolls as she noticed. They weren’t all dolls.

Valerie staggered back, her knees growing weak.

In between those dolls was... Was... She covered her mouth. In between those dolls was Frankie dressed as a doll, wearing a bloody dress and a knife sticking out of her chest.

"This must be a joke."
