Chapter 502: Crimson Inferno

Colors instantly drained from He Juan’s face, and a gnawing unease coiled in the pit of his stomach, making him feel sick all of a sudden.

No, something was wrong. Something had gone terribly wrong.

The pilot was desperately trying to contact the other side. "Team 1 to Team 2, what’s happening over there? Damn it, they’re not responding! The communication channel is down!"

He Juan’s gaze pierced through the inky darkness and the howling wind to land on the tumultuous helicopter. Even though the distance obscured any details, he felt as though he could make out a few silhouettes tussling inside. As though confirming his fear, a sudden burst of fiery light erupted from the cabin, and He Juan instantly knew.

Someone was firing a gun.

Who could it be? Marius?

But the chopper was full of no one but their own people – he had even confirmed it himself before he boarded it earlier – so how could chaos break out all of a sudden?!

The sight immediately snapped him back to his senses. He no longer cared about the situation below, or the fact that the Interpol began to swarm the two vessels without his assistance – everything faded into insignificance. He ripped the goggles from his face and stormed to the cockpit, shouting with fierce determination, "Get us closer! We have to bring M out of there!"

The pilot was stumped by that command, and he stuttered out, "B–But... they are out of control right now..."

He Juan gritted his teeth, his eyes turning bloodshot in agitation. He knew that getting closer to the other side was extremely risky, as there was a high chance that the spiraling chopper would lose control and collide with them, but right now such a risk did not even register into his mind. They meant nothing compared to the urgency of rescuing Marius.

Seizing the pilot by the collar, he bit out, his voice a venomous hiss. "I gave you an order to get closer..." the terrifying intensity in his eyes bore down on the other man, rendering him petrified in place. Oppressive strands of pheromones oozed out of him akin to a viper ready to strike. "Or should I throw you out and fly the helicopter myself? Huh?!"

This was a superior Alpha’s domination, a power capable of bending even the strongest mind.

The oxygen in the cockpit seemed to have been sucked thin, rendering everyone unable to breathe. Drenched in cold sweat, the pilot finally parted his trembling lips to stutter out, "Y–Yes, Sir! I will do as you command!"

He Juan immediately released his grip, turned away without a word and put on his goggles again, ready to act any moment. He kept his gaze intently on the other helicopter while tapping on his earpiece, attempting to reach the blonde man. "This is XIU. M, please answer me if you hear this!"

Crackling static met his ear, followed by a maddening silence.

Icy shivers crawled down He Juan’s spine and it took him a while to realize that he was sweating all over beneath his tactical gear, yet the biting night air did nothing to temper his anxiety. Please, Marius had to be okay. He had no idea what he would do if something were to happen to the man. Just the mere thought of it was enough to consume him with sheer terror.

Marius is strong, he tried to reassure himself. He is the strongest man I have ever met. He will surely be fine. Why would he not?

Taking a deep breath, he adjusted his sweaty grip around the rifle and locked his gaze onto the struggling chopper, determination blazing in his eyes. "Fly closer!" he ordered.

As the distance between the two helicopters diminished, He Juan’s eyes widened as he witnessed the scene inside the cabin. Marius was pinned to the ground by a man, locked in a life-or-death struggle with the knife only a few inches above his heart!

He Juan cursed under his breath. Betrayal? It certainly was not an uncommon reoccurrence for them but... why did it have to happen today? And why now?! Unfortunately, He Juan was not given more time to ponder on the situation as he swiftly took his position near the open door and aimed at the enemy with his rifle. Alas, the other helicopter was extremely unstable, making it impossible for him to aim correctly.

Frustration and anxiety mingled in He Juan’s voice as he barked,"Get closer!"

"Mr. XIU, this is as far as we can go!"

"Fuck!" A curse slipped out of He Juan’s mouth. He had no clear idea of the situation on the other side, but one thing for certain – something must have gone awry to either the pilot or the machine, and he had to get Marius out of there as soon as possible before the helicopter crashed!

Making a decision, he stood up and undid the strap around his body that anchored him to the helicopter, shocking everyone on board. "Mr. XIU, what are you planning to do?!" one of them exclaimed.

He Juan informed them without turning around. "I’m going to jump over."

"Are you out of your mind?!" The man blurted out in disbelief. The distance between the two helicopters was more than ten meters, and attempting to jump was no different than a suicide mission!

A faint sneer curled on He Juan’s lips. Of course, he knew that his plan was insane. Under normal circumstances, jumping from one helicopter to another was a nearly impossible feat, given the wind and air resistance. Let alone now, when the other side was swerving uncontrollably. He needed precise coordination and timing, and the slightest error would result in his body being shredded to pieces by the moving rotor blades.

However, did he have any other choice? Unless the probability was at complete zero, he was willing to give it a try, regardless of the consequences or risk he had to bear.

For the person on the other side was not just anyone for him. He was Marius Morningstar, his friend, brother, teacher, and support. And he knew deep within his core that if their positions were swapped, Marius would not hesitate to do the same thing for him either.

Steeling himself, He Juan measured the distance he had to cover, waiting for the right moment to jump. However, in that crucial moment, as though knowing what he planned to do, Marius tilted his head slightly and locked eyes with him. His eyes widened in alarm and he quickly shook his head at He Juan, telling him not to be hasty.

When he saw that He Juan outright ignored him, he gritted his teeth, exerted all of his strength and kicked the assailant off his body. The direction in which Marius sent the man happened to fling him out of the open door. As the helicopter lurched dangerously, the man struggled to maintain balance and ultimately tumbled into the sea below!

Marius was sent rolling to the open door as well due to the momentum, yet just in the nick of time, he managed to grab onto the doorframe and prevent himself from falling!

Witnessing this unexpected turn of events, He Juan sucked in a breath and shouted at the man behind him, "The rope! Hand the rope over to me!"

"Marius!" He Juan raised his voice to rival the roar of the helicopter blades. He showed the rope to the man in a throwing gesture, "I’m going to throw the rope over! You must grab this!"

But Marius remained crouched on the ground, pressing a hand against his thigh. He Juan’s heart sank to the ground as he spotted the crimson stains on Marius’ hand. He abruptly recalled the gunshot he had seen earlier. Could it be that Marius had been shot at that time? In such a condition, could he even make the leap?!

"Marius!" He Juan’s voice almost cracked, his heart fraught in fear and anxiety. He made a quick, resolute decision, "Marius, stay there! I’m coming to you!"

However, Marius merely shook his head in response. He showed He Juan a strained smile and opened his mouth to convey something.

What? What was he saying?

Marius’ lips kept moving, his voice lost amidst the cacophony of rumbling blades and howling winds. "... Sirius... ...sorry...."

It took a while for He Juan to be able to grasp his words, and the instant he did, he felt his mind turning blank as though a nuclear explosion had gone off within him.

Tell Sirius that I’m sorry.

What did he mean? What exactly did he mean by that?! A wave of panic washed over He Juan, his breathing grew harsh, and the rims of his eyes reddened. He took a few steps back, ready to leap to the other helicopter, but at that very moment, the chopper in front of him suddenly dropped from the sky like a marionette whose strings had been severed, plummeting straight into the dark abyss of the sea!

"No..." He Juan whispered with sheer terror in his eyes, his mind still reeling from the last smile Marius showed him. It was his usual kind and gentle smile, yet also tinged with a hint of apology.

Before him, the helicopter plunged straight into the sea and—

BOOM!

The force of the explosion shattered the helicopter into pieces, igniting a towering flame amidst the darkness of the night. The impact was so intense that it sent their own helicopter off balance, and the pilot fought to stabilize it. He Juan was barely aware of how he almost got thrown out of the open door or how two people held him back to prevent him from leaping into the fiery abyss. His eyes remained fixed on the crimson inferno below, his voice hoarse in anguish.

"MARIUS—!"
