Chapter 226: What Good? (Ch.226)

Neveah’s stiff posture relaxed only when Davina pulled away, and took a step back, out of Neveah’s personal space.

Davina did not even seem to have noticed Neveah’s adverse reaction to her hug and Neveah was glad for that.

Neveah had never liked having anyone in close proximity to her... she had already died once because she let her guard down, it would be foolish of her to allow a repeat of it.

At this point in Neveah’s life, whoever could get too close to her without triggering her instincts was someone she trusted deeply... and there were not many of such people.

’Are there any?’ Neveah’s wolf thought to her but Neveah had no response and so she remained quiet.

"Don’t do that again, I was really worried for you." Davina lectured with a stern look.

Neveah could not make any promises and so she only nodded but said nothing in response.

When that was settled, Davina looked over Neveah, taking note of her attire.

"Well, I cannot say I expected this..." Davina murmured in astonishment.

"I would have to agree there." Neveah said back with a casual shrug.

Davina did not speak any further and gestured towards the fourth level.

"Come on now, you should get some rest. Lord Everon did mention you need absolute rest, you will have enough time to go on flights with your Beau in time." Davina teased.

Neveah rolled her eyes, letting Davina pull her along as they headed into the fourth level.

"Right, you mentioned you were away from the Keep. How come you said nothing of it?" Neveah suddenly recalled.

Davina passed Neveah a thoughtful look as she stopped for a moment.

"Well, you had Lady Kaliana’s childbirth to worry about. I must have been so overwhelmed with all that was happening, I left before Lady Kaliana’s delivery."

"Thinking about it now, I cannot even remember why I did leave. I guess that was just how worried I was, I ended up spending these past days in the citadel with my aunt and I only returned today." Davina said thoughtfully.

"You were not the one imprisoned and somehow you were more overwhelmed than I was, to think you’re even forgetting things now." Neveah replied in amusement.

"Oh, put it to rest. At least now, you are no longer under my custody. But don’t you get into any trouble...you have done quite enough." Davina warned.

"What did I do?" Neveah asked innocently.

Davina scoffed at Neveah’s innocent tone before she hastened her pace, still tugging Neveah along with her.

"If you’re so worried about me, you should consider my health." Neveah pointed out as she almost lost her balance from Davina’s harsh tugging.

"You should have thought of that before jumping off a cliff and causing such a mess." Davina countered.

"But what did I do?!" Neveah asked in honest bafflement this time.

"Apart from playing dead and making the whole keep search all over for you? I hear Lord Xenon’s wild haze was triggered by word of your fall."

"Even so, he suppressed his wild haze and searched for days, the haze returned more severely when he could not find you." Davina accused.

At the mention of Xenon, Neveah immediately stopped and Davina was pulled back since she could not truly pull Neveah if Neveah did not allow it.

Neveah was still a wolf shifter afterall, she was not so weak.

"He did what...? Neveah asked in a barely audible whisper when her surprise wore off.

"You didn’t know?" Davina asked with a raised brow.

"No, no I didn’t! How could he search for me in that state?!" Neveah exclaimed in bafflement.

"Well, Lord Xenon did restrain the wild haze during the search. I hear he was doing just fine for a few days and it only returned when the rumours began spreading that you were certainly dead." Davina explained slowly.

Neveah opened her mouth to speak but shut it back up again, unable to form any words as her heart tightened in concern and guilt.

"As an attendant, you should not make your Lord so worried for you. Now that Lord Xenon requested to be cuffed, I am certain the keep will be tense for many days... " Davina continued, trailing off with a heavy sigh.

Meanwhile, Neveah just stood, seeming to be in a daze.

"At least, everyone now believes your presence was the only thing keeping away Lord Xenon’s wild haze."

" Now that it returned in your absence, they can finally see all the good you have done the Keep and everyone is relieved at your return." Davina concluded.

With that said, Davina pulled Neveah along till they arrived Neveah’s room while Neveah’s mind reeled from what she had just heard.

’Good?’ Neveah thought to herself.

What good? Neveah did not think she had done anything...at least not for Xenon.

Neveah and King Jian were clearly the only two who knew Xenon’s wild haze had already returned even before Neveah fell off the cliff... infact, Neveah was pretty certain she had triggered it.

The encounter Xenon and Neveah had on Mount Edar was enough to prove that, Neveah being a reminder of Xenon’s past love had triggered the wild haze.

And Neveah had made things worse by jumping off the cliff and becoming a cause of concern to an already hurting Xenon.

So how could it be believed that Neveah’s return was a relief? Now when Xenon would even be chained?

"Is there no way? No way His Grace can retract his decision to chain Xenon?" Neveah asked Davina as she absentmindedly took a seat on her bed.

"Chained? Oh no, Lord Xenon is to be cuffed and not chained." Davina replied in a grim tone.

"There is a difference?" Neveah asked warily and Davina nodded slowly.

"A dragon can easily break out of chains...a dragon cuff is a chain made purely of magic, just as it was done by the sorcerers in the early years...it is the only way to truly bound a dragon." Davina revealed.

"Xenon is to be bound...by magic...?" Neveah repeated to herself in horror.
