Omega's Rebirth - Chapter 227: A Burdensome Order ()
"Xenon is to be bound...by magic...?" Neveah repeated to herself in horror.
"Well, what else? A regular dragon is stronger than any metal you can think of, no chains crafted by ores or metals can restrain them."
"They would break through it as easily as I would snap a thin, frail, branch. It is simply useless against them."
" History has taught enough lessons and perhaps the worst of it’s lessons taught is the true way to bound a dragon." Davina said with a shake of her head.
"And knowing this is Lord Xenon’s choice, I do not believe His Grace or the King’s guard would oppose... amongst we all, they must be the ones most burdened by this." Davina added.
Neveah sighed heavily, she also did not think anyone could stand against a choice Xenon had made himself, the only person who could do anything about it was Xenon himself.
But Xenon had already made his decision, would he hear anyone out?
Neveah wanted to believe she was the one who could talk Xenon out of this madness, she wanted to believe if Xenon would listen to anyone, it would be her.
Xenon always did listen to her or so she had thought, Neveah had realized just how wrong she was the moment she stared into Xenon’s savage eyes.
Now, that deception had worn off... Neveah knew her place, she knew exactly what she was to Xenon.
"You are no longer Lord Xenon’s attendant, Veah. Do not burden yourself with this, Lord Everon will have your tonic sent up soon. Be sure to take it and get some rest." Davina told Neveah before she took her leave.
Finally left to her own thoughts, Neveah bit her lip anxiously as she wondered if she could get involved or if her interference would only make things worse.
’If we were to get involved, what would we do, Veah? This is still the Dragon Keep...a place where we hold no power.’ Neveah’s wolf reminded her.
Neveah hissed quietly, she hated the fact that her wolf was entirely right. There was nothing Neveah could do for Xenon or for anyone...it was hard enough to keep her ownself alive in Dragon Keep.
’With what rights do I ask him to change his decision? As his attendant? As his friend? As what exactly?’ Neveah thought to herself, a mirthless smile on her lips.
"Our paths are different now." Neveah reminded herself with a sigh.
Neveah rose to her feet and took off her riding dress, throwing on a casual white dress before she headed back to her bed.
Neveah pulled back the covers and laid down, pulling them back up over herself and all the way to her neck.
All of a sudden, Neveah felt completely drained and she just wanted to lay down.
She curled up on her bed and her eyes fluttered closed... though finding sleep certainly did not come as easy.
A knock on Neveah’s door a short time later had her sitting up on her bed.
"Come in." Neveah permitted, she already knew who was on the other side.
Menarx’s scent was one Neveah could already easily recognize and so she leaned against her headrest as Menarx stepped in, carrying a tray with him.
"Is that Lord Everon’s brew?" Neveah asked with a frown, already anticipating the bitter taste.
"It will help you recover your strength and you need all the strength you can get if you are to join the academy tomorrow." Menarx replied in amusement.
"Urggh." Neveah grunted as Menarx walked over and handed her the bowl of medicinal tonic.
Neveah frowned as she lifted it to her lips and downed the bitter liquid before placing it back down on the tray.
"You look troubled, did something happen?" Neveah asked with a raised brow.
She had noticed from the moment Menarx stepped in that his countenance was not the same as when he had left her at the landing platform.
Menarx placed the tray aside and sat by Neveah’s bed, taking Neveah’s hand in his, he lifted it to his lips and placed a light kiss on the back of her hand before he rested his forehead against it.
His eyes were closed and he breathed out a heavy sigh.
"For a moment... let’s just stay like this for a moment." Menarx murmured in a low tone.
Neveah watched Menarx, her brows furrowed in concern, she could tell he was having some sort of difficulty.
"What is it? What happened?" Neveah asked quietly.
"I... Jian orders I make flight for the academy of magic. I must have the headmaster cast the most powerful dragon cuff... for Xenon." Menarx explained with a quiet sigh.
That terrible ache Neveah had struggled to push away crawled up again and Neveah released a shaky breath.
"It brings back such horrible memories just thinking of it. How am I to execute such an order? How can Xenon be so cruel to ask this of us?" Menarx asked in dismay.
Neveah could see Menarx was deeply burdened by his orders and Menarx equally knew Neveah was deeply concerned by Xenon’s affairs and so there was no need for words.
Neveah let Menarx gather his thoughts in silence, there was truly nothing she could say that could make his task anymore easier.
"Must it be this way?" Neveah asked after a moment of quiet.
"Xenon is the only one that can stop it." Menarx replied as he lifted a gaze to Neveah.
"Jian has no intentions of stopping him, but I know if there was another way, he would never agree to this."
"Yet even if there is no other way... this is just not the way. I know this is asking a lot, to see Xenon in his present condition is dangerous... but ... would you speak to him?" Menarx asked Neveah hopefully.
Neveah pursed her lips slightly, she knew it must have been difficult for Menarx to make such a request from her.
"If he will not hear his brothers out... why would he listen to me?" Neveah murmured quietly.
"Do you truly believe that?" Menarx asked.
