Omega's Rebirth - Chapter 202: A Step Late ()
Menarx had never felt slow in his life, he was one of the fastest dragons that walked the Asvarian stronghold, fast enough to go down in history.
His lean, muscular built and curved scales made him more adept at flight than most dragons he knew and his title as King’s guard ensured he had lead enough flights in his lifetime that the skies had become much too familiar.
Even the highest altitudes were of no consequence to Menarx, however at this moment, as Menarx headed for Maneward, he suddenly felt he did not move nearly fast enough.
If all things were as he wished, Menarx would already have arrived Maneward in the blink of an eye because every second wasted was a second more apart from Neveah.
It was a silly thought, considering Menarx had spent the past ten days without her and a few seconds more should not have meant anything but Menarx just could not help his anxiety.
These past ten days had been torture, Menarx was not certain he had a time as hard as this ever since the great war...or the beginning of Xenon’s wild haze.
It was only now Menarx realized just how devastated Xenon must have felt...to lose the person he gave his heart and life to in more ways than one.
Menarx did not think he could ever cast blame Xenon ever again, in just ten days, Menarx had also felt himself losing his wits yet Xenon had lived with the wild haze for decades.
But now, it would all be fine... with Neveah back, Menarx was certain not just himself but Xenon also would be at ease now.
Neveah was in Maneward. All this while, she was not dead, she was just in Maneward, a short flight from Dragon Keep.
The thought rang over and over again in Menarx’s head as the district of Maneward came within sight and he made his landing, shifting mid air and landing to the ground on his feet.
Cries if surprise rang from the citizens at Menarx’s sudden arrival but he paid them no attention, storming towards the dragon guards while his eyes searched for Neveah’s familiar face.
"Lord Kaideon arrived first." A dragon guard reported before Menarx could even ask.
There was no one in Dragon Keep who had not heard of Neveah’s fall and how Menarx, Xenon and even King Jian searched for her and so there was no need for words.
The dragon guards already understood the report Menarx wanted to hear.
"Where is she?!" Menarx demanded as he turned to find Kaideon already stood there with arms crossed over his chest while the dragon guards took away the dwarves and dispersed the crowd.
Kaideon...of all people, Menarx did not expect to find him here and so he was surprised but did not dwell on it.
Afterall, Kaideon was dune lord. Right after the King’s guard came the lords of the twelve fortresses in rank, and Kaideon was amongst the highest ranked of the lords,
The most trusted by King Jian, there was no place Kaideon could not be and no affair he could not interfere with.
Kaideon passed a glance over to Menarx, raising a single brow at Menarx’s question but he gave no response.
And one did not expect him to, everyone knew Kaideon did not speak, his second in command Rodvan spoke in his stead.
But Rodvan was nowhere in sight and Menarx did not have the time or patience to wait.
"You must have seen her, Kaideon." Menarx continued, knowing Kaideon clearly understood who he referred to.
Kaideon shook his head once, crossing his arms over his chest, his expression blank.
"It is highly unlikely that the dune lord would miss catching sight of her. So I take it you mean to say she has already left?" Menarx asked knowingly.
Kaideon nodded in agreement to Menarx’s words which attested to the fact that Kaideon had indeed arrived in time to see Neveah. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
"You know how we have searched for her...why did you not stop her?" Menarx hissed but realized his rude tone when Kaideon’s gaze narrowed and the Dune Lord scoffed beneath his breath.
"Why should you? Is that what you mean to say?" Menarx asked, knowing Kaideon well enough to understand his gestures.
Kaideon was a dragon shrouded in mystery, even Menarx knew to be careful with the dune lord but at this point, Menarx had already tossed caution out the window.
If caution would prevent him from finding Neveah today, then Menarx had no use for it.
"Could it be...you have known of her location all this while?!" Menarx suddenly understood it, his eyes narrowing into a glare.
Kaideon kept his gaze fixed innocently ahead as though he had no idea what Menarx referred to but that was enough to confirm Menarx’s suspicion.
"Kaideon!" Menarx snapped in disbelief, a tinge of hurt reflecting in his tone.
Kaideon’s gaze moved back to settle on Menarx and somehow, Menarx figured out exactly why Rodvan could easily convey Kaideon’s intents without exchanging words or thoughts.
Kaideon had the most expressive eyes, when he allowed them to be anything other than blank.
In the accusing look in Kaideon’s eyes, Menarx could see all Kaideon had to say on the matter and he winced visibly.
"It was wrong of us to make her stand trial and I had no idea Jian’s words would anger her so. It was our fault she jumped and she most likely does not wish to return," Menarx paused slightly at this point.
"But even so, just tell me where she went...you know that much." Menarx reasoned, admitting to Kaideon’s accusations.
Kaideon shrugged casually which was a blatant refusal to Menarx’s request.
"Even with Jian’s orders? You fearless... cruel bastard." Menarx murmured beneath his breath as he settled to track Neveah down himself.
As long as she had just been here, Menarx was certain he could find her and so he dashed off in the direction of the forest knowing that was exactly where Neveah would head.
