Chapter 144: Chapter 144: A Partnership Marriage Without Love

She softly turned her gaze, and by the moonlight filtering through the window, she vaguely saw the outline of his face. "Your body is your own; work never ends. So...you must take care of yourself."

"Okay." Adrian Lancaster was also pondering this matter. Was he happy?

He seemed to have never thought about it; he never centered everything around himself.

"I think... as we live, no matter what we do, we should make ourselves happy." Faye Turner slightly raised the corners of her lips, "If you’re not happy, all efforts are meaningless."

Adrian Lancaster then asked her, "Are you happy being married to me?"

The girl was momentarily stunned, then smiled as she replied, "Of course I’m happy. In this world, all marriages are a gamble. Betting on you seems to have better odds than betting on others, right?"

This answer left Adrian Lancaster somewhat moved.

He held her hand from under the covers, "Don’t worry, I’ve prepared to spend a lifetime with you."

Faye Turner should have been touched, but there was no mention of "love" in what she heard. All the promises were given only because she’s pregnant, which inevitably left her a bit saddened.

"Adrian..." Feeling the warmth of the man’s hand, the girl summoned the courage to speak, "I hope you’ll love life, and love me in the process."

Adrian Lancaster was clearly taken aback by these words, and he still didn’t respond.

Ever since Sienna left, he seemed to have lost the courage to love someone, because love can bring hurt.

A long silence filled the room...

Faye Turner’s mind was a bit foggy, and she regretted the words she had spoken earlier, pushing their originally balanced relationship into an irreparable awkwardness.

After a while, Adrian Lancaster released her hand and tugged at the covers, "Sleep."

In the darkness, the girl listened to his steady and even breathing, feeling as though he had quickly fallen asleep.

After a while of wandering thoughts, she too drifted into dreamland.

Early the next morning.

After Adrian Lancaster got up, he didn’t wait for her. He just said to her before going out, "You’re pregnant, so perhaps we should get a helper for the housework. Is that okay with you?"

Actually, Faye Turner didn’t want a third person in this home, but she didn’t want to go against his wishes. "It’s up to you."

"Alright, I’ll arrange it." He told her, "Since you want to keep the pregnancy a secret from Grandpa for now, we shouldn’t hire someone from the old house, and I’ll need some time to handle this carefully."

"Okay." Not hiring from the old house was indeed better—she couldn’t fully trust anyone from there, especially when she thought of Mrs. Lancaster’s cold, intimidating gaze, it scared her.

Adrian Lancaster left.

Faye Turner went downstairs ten minutes later. Uncle Lane, upon seeing her, hurried to open the car door for her, "Good morning, Miss Turner."

"I came out early on purpose today. Uncle Lane, can you take me to an address first?"

"Of course, just let me know where." Uncle Lane, much like Mr. Kerr, was friendly and a good man.

Faye Turner enlarged an address on her phone and showed it to him, "Do you know which direction this is in?"

Uncle Lane looked carefully at the location on the screen, "Yes, I know it! I’ve been there before!"

"That’s great." The girl’s eyes sparkled.

Immediately, Faye Turner got into the car, sitting in the front passenger seat, holding her phone to look at the navigation.

Uncle Lane asked enthusiastically, "Miss Turner, what are you going to do there?"

"I’m looking for a traditional Chinese medicine doctor. I’ve heard his clinic doesn’t have a sign, and it’s hard to find unless referred by someone."

"Are you talking about... Dr. Aiken?"

Faye Turner suddenly turned her gaze, "You know him too?"

Uncle Lane smiled, "I went to see him once; I know where his clinic is. Dr. Aiken’s medical skills are extraordinary. He can diagnose any ailment in the body just by taking the pulse and prescribe the right medicine, one dose cures all."

"Is he really that amazing?"

"Even more incredible than rumors say!" Uncle Lane said with confidence, "Why? Is Miss Turner not feeling well?"
