When His Nauseous Sweetheart Frowns, the Tycoon's Family Takes Turns Pampering Her-Chapter 21: My Husband is a Business Tycoon
After returning to Lakeside Manor, Luna Axton thought about what Blaze Fairchild had said earlier about Evergrow.
Curious, she sent Joy Coleman a message.
[Joy, have you ever seen your boss? What’s his last name?]
Instead of texting back, Joy immediately started a video call.
Luna had come back to Lakeside Manor with Blaze after dinner, and he had gone straight to his study upon their return. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
She was now alone in her room.
Luna turned her phone’s volume all the way down, tiptoed downstairs, and answered the call as far away from Blaze as she could get.
Joy looked at the shaking camera. "What are you doing? You’re skulking around like a thief."
Through the shaky camera, glimpses of a mahogany handrail and staircase could be seen, followed by a flash of warm, orange light revealing a spacious living room with floor-to-ceiling windows. The decor was elegant and understated. The place seemed quiet, but if you listened closely, you could hear the sound of flowing water.
"Luna Axton, I didn’t video call you to watch you bounce around. You’ve got a baby in your belly, remember?"
"Shh!" Luna pressed a finger to her pink lips, signaling for Joy to be quiet. "Hold on a sec."
Luna looked around, mentally mapping out the layout of the house.
’Blaze’s study on the second floor is pretty far from here. He shouldn’t be able to hear me talk.’
Mrs. Creed had also gone home for the day, and the living room was empty.
Seeing her friend hiding and furtively looking around, Joy was struck by a very bad feeling.
’Could it be? Is that old man abusive?’
Joy picked up a badminton racket and swung it. ’This won’t pack much of a punch. I need something else.’
Her gaze locked onto the black umbrella hanging by the door.
It was a company umbrella she had borrowed when it was raining. The tip was sharp enough to be used for self-defense.
She grabbed the umbrella, put on her shoes, and prepared to head out.
Luna finally settled down on the sofa and looked at Joy on her phone screen. "Are you going out?"
"To rescue you!"
"Rescue me?" Luna was confused. Then she remembered how Joy had described her behavior and it clicked.
"Joy, you misunderstood. I just came downstairs to talk to you so no one would overhear."
"Oh~" Joy let out a long sigh of relief, put down the umbrella, and sat back down on her bed. "You had me all tensed up."
"Sorry, sorry." Luna stuck her tongue out, apologizing for worrying her best friend. "Joy, I just wanted to ask, have you ever seen your boss?"
"He spoke on stage during the joint intern training for all departments, but I was sitting too far back to get a clear look."
"Do you have a picture?" Luna’s voice was trembling with excitement.
’If the boss of Evergrow Group, where Joy is interning, is Blaze Fairchild, then he won’t divorce me so easily.’
When she had discussed marriage with her mother, her mom had said that for some people—especially those in business or politics—a stable marriage is a positive signal.
Joy heard the anticipation in her voice. "Luna Axton, why are you suddenly so interested in the company I’m interning at?"
"I... I was just asking." Just that afternoon, Joy had told her to be more careful, and now here she was, worried about getting divorced.
’If Joy knew that one comment of hers had made me this anxious, she’d start overthinking everything she says in the future. I don’t want my best friend to become so guarded around me.’
"Luna Axton, something’s up with you."
Joy’s inner gossip flared to life. Her entire face filled the phone screen as she threatened,
"Spill it. Don’t make me use the code: ’Watermelons, grapefruits, no secrets!’"
Luna pursed her lips and said nothing, lowering her head to pick at the embroidery on a throw pillow.
She was the one who had come up with that slogan back when Joy had a crush on an upperclassman and was moping around all by herself. It was a password created to open Joy’s heart.
Whenever one of them said the code, the other had to either reveal their secret or do something to push their own boundaries.
Now, the choice was hers.
"I suspect... that the man I married is the boss of Evergrow Group."
Luna spoke slowly, enunciating every word, hoping Joy would hear her clearly.
The other end of the line went silent for a moment before Joy said, "Do you have a picture? Send it to me."
Luna minimized the video call window and found the scanned copy of her marriage certificate in her photo album.
She had scanned it as a backup, worried she might lose the original.
"Sent."
The playful mood between them vanished.
Meanwhile, Joy found a photo from the training session in her work group chat and sent a high-resolution picture of the CEO to Luna.
"You take a look, too. Is this the man you married?"
The man in the photo had sharp eyebrows and cold eyes. The lines of his face were smooth and strong. As he spoke, his hands rested casually on the podium.
Just by standing there, he had an aura that commanded the entire room to hold its breath and listen in silence.
After both of them had confirmed the photos the other had sent, they both enlarged the video call window in unspoken agreement.
Luna looked relieved, while Joy’s jaw dropped in astonishment.
"Oh my god, that’s the guy you married."
"You’re the wife of Evergrow’s boss!"
"My dream company... and you, my friend, went and secretly bagged my boss."
"Girl, you’re a legend!"
Joy fired off a rapid-fire barrage of comments, her shock so apparent that she didn’t even give Luna a chance to speak.
"What insane luck! You take a part-time job as a designated driver and end up with a business tycoon for a husband."
Luna joked, "Purely an accident. Just a coincidence."
Joy raised an eyebrow. "So, how’s the boss’s... uh... drive?"
"His car is hard to drive."
Joy knew she’d get such an innocent answer. Luna was just too pure and clean.
She pounded on the desk beside her bed, roaring with laughter. "HAHAHA!"
Luna watched her, completely bewildered.
’His car is hard to drive, is that really so funny?’
’Or is there something wrong with Blaze’s car?’
Joy laughed until her face turned red. She clutched her aching stomach and said seriously,
"I was so worried you had married some nasty old man. I was afraid you’d be trapped in a marriage for the rest of your life, like an angel who’d lost her wings, with no light forever. You’re too good for that; you shouldn’t be tied down by anyone."
"Luna, even though the boss seems cold and is a workaholic, judging by the welfare policies he’s implemented for women, he respects women and understands the difficulties they face in the workplace. If you want to be you, he won’t stop you."
She had thought about the things Joy was saying.
That was why she had been so desperate to know if Blaze Fairchild was the boss of Evergrow Group.
Blaze Fairchild was the CEO of Evergrow Group. A marriage could be kept quiet, but a divorce would become gossip fodder.
For example, by his aunt who had never liked him, Rosalind Fairchild.
Blaze had been very clear about his reason for getting married: to make his grandfather happy.
And from their very first meeting, Grandpa Fairchild had taken a great liking to her.
’As long as Grandpa Fairchild is happy with me, and as long as I’m a little more obedient to Blaze, he’ll consider all the factors and won’t get a divorce.’
Besides, while Blaze was indeed very domineering about the baby, his company’s welfare policies for women were very well-implemented.
’If Blaze tries to stop me from continuing my studies or work in the future, using ’taking care of the child’ as an excuse...’
’I can counter with his own company’s female-friendly policies.’
’Blaze wouldn’t contradict himself, implementing generous welfare policies for women in his company on one hand, while trapping his own wife at home on the other.’
With the issue that had been weighing on her mind all day resolved, Luna felt a sudden sense of relief. "Joy, thank you for worrying so much about me. The baby is still here, my mom’s condition is improving, and I’m very content right now."
Now that she knew Luna’s husband wasn’t some nasty old man, Joy was suddenly at ease.
She had cried several times recently, heartbroken over the thought of a pearl like Luna being cast before swine.
"Luna, I’m so happy for you. What I said today was a bit harsh. You’re too good of a person, not really suited for this complicated world. In my subconscious, you’re a princess raised in an ivory tower, and I feel like no one is good enough for you. But reality is what it is, and now that there’s someone who can share your burdens, I think that’s wonderful."
"Mhm." Luna nodded emphatically. Joy was someone who genuinely cared for her. "Joy, I’m so glad I have you. You always see things more realistically than I do. I’m too idealistic and a little stubborn. It’s a good thing I have you."
"Sending you a hug. I’ll hit you up next time, if I don’t have to work overtime this weekend."
"Okay."
With tears welling in their eyes, the two girls looked at each other and smiled, both seeing the cherished bond reflected in the other’s gaze.
