Chapter 99: Chapter 99: Buying Out Our Relationship

Vivian Quinn collected her thoughts and smiled. "Joy, don’t worry about grown-up stuff. If Mason didn’t want you to know, he must have had his reasons."

"Sis, I told you I’m not a kid anymore!" Joy Chase said anxiously. "You’re hiding something from me, aren’t you? Tell me!"

Vivian Quinn took off her face mask. "Joy, listen to me..."

"Sis, your face..." Joy Chase looked at her in shock. "Your face is healed!"

"Mhm," Vivian Quinn replied with a brilliant smile. "I told you in secret before, my face healed a long time ago."

"I know, but you never removed that scar." Joy Chase couldn’t hide her admiration. "Sis, you’re so beautiful..."

"What kind of reaction is that? We grew up together, of course you know what I look like."

"I know what you looked like as a kid, but you’ve changed so much!" Joy Chase stared at her, stunned. "Sis, you’re so beautiful..."

"Have I?" Vivian Quinn touched her face. "You don’t think people will assume I got plastic surgery, do you?"

Joy Chase burst out laughing with a "Pfft!" "It’s not impossible!"

The two sisters roared with laughter, filling the hospital room with joy and cheer.

As Vivian Quinn laughed, her eyes started to sting with tears. "Joy, I promise I’ll find a cure for your illness."

Joy Chase started to choke up too. "Sis, I don’t want to be a burden to you."

"You’ve never been a burden. You have to know, in this world, we only have each other."

"Sis, thank you."

Vivian Quinn hugged her. "Just focus on getting better. Don’t think or worry about anything happening outside. I’ll make sure you have the best life possible."

"Okay."

Joy Chase didn’t press the matter about Mason Landon, and Vivian Quinn breathed a sigh of relief. She had no idea how she would have explained it.

She ate a little something with Joy Chase and then left.

Just as she opened the door to leave, she came face to face with Mason Landon, who was doing his rounds.

Their eyes met, and they both froze for a moment.

Vivian Quinn quickly composed herself. Just as she was about to walk past him, Mason’s deep, gentle voice sounded in her ear. "Vivian, I need to talk to you."

Vivian Quinn stopped and turned to look at him. "Is it urgent? If not, I should probably get going."

Mason Landon’s brow furrowed slightly. "It’s urgent."

"Alright, then."

"Wait for me a second." Mason gave a few instructions to the doctor accompanying him, then quickly led Vivian Quinn to the hospital’s rooftop terrace.

There were outdoor tables and chairs on the terrace. Mason gestured, "Have a seat."

"Thanks."

The two of them sat down facing each other. Vivian Quinn spoke first. "What’s on your mind? Go ahead."

Mason Landon gave a faint smile. "What, are you casting me aside now that you’ve gotten what you wanted? Am I not even allowed to see you anymore?"

Vivian Quinn immediately denied it. "Of course not."

"I was starting to think that after marrying Jett Sterling, you’d lost your own identity and wouldn’t see any other men."

"No, Jett Sterling respects me. He wouldn’t ask that of me. It’s just..." Vivian Quinn chose her words carefully. "I think you need some time to cool off. Once you’ve calmed down, maybe our relationship can go back to the way it was."

Mason’s lips curved, but the smile didn’t reach his eyes. "Vivian, it seems you still don’t get it. Even in the past, my feelings for you weren’t purely platonic."

Vivian Quinn: "..."

For a moment, she didn’t know how to respond to that. She fidgeted with the hem of her clothes and said softly, "Mason, if you knew me well enough, you’d know I don’t play games or entertain ambiguity. Especially not now that I’m married. So between us, things have to be completely platonic."

Mason sneered. "So you had Jett Sterling pay me a huge medical fee to buy me out of our relationship?"

Vivian Quinn frowned. "What are you talking about? When did I ever try to buy you out of our relationship?"

"It seems you weren’t aware. Jett Sterling offered me a massive, ten-figure sum to thank me for performing your surgery. The only condition was that I was never to appear before you again."

Vivian Quinn was completely stunned. "...Then why did you stop me just now?"

Mason spread his hands. "Because I never accepted the money. Jett Sterling completely underestimates me. And this whole thing just proves to me that he doesn’t deserve you. Vivian, can’t you see it? In his eyes, you’re something that can be measured in money. That’s why he tried to throw money at me. In the future, no matter how many admirers you have, he’ll just use the same method to get rid of them."

"Let me be blunt, Vivian. In his mind, you can be objectified. As long as he has enough money, he thinks he can keep you by his side."

"That’s not true!" Vivian Quinn argued back. "You don’t need to stand here trying to sow discord. I know very well how Jett Sterling treats me. He’s not that kind of person!"

"Then what kind of person do you think he is?" Mason retorted. "You think just because he doesn’t mind your past, you should be overcome with gratitude, vowing to stay with him until death if he never abandons you?"

"But Vivian, have I *ever* held your past against you?"

Vivian Quinn felt a giant boulder pressing on her chest, the weight so unbearable she could hardly breathe.

"Mason, that’s not it!" she explained with difficulty. "I admit, what happened in the past made me feel insecure—incredibly insecure. But I didn’t just accept the first person who supposedly didn’t mind it."

"Even if I’ve had a child, it doesn’t mean I’m not worthy of love anymore. I’m with Jett Sterling because of love, not because he doesn’t mind my past. Can you understand that?"

"It’s because I don’t understand that I’m in so much pain!" Mason gave a self-deprecating laugh. "Vivian, I can’t accept us just passing each other by. I never can."

"Mason, you’re being too stubborn." Vivian Quinn looked at him. "If you keep holding on like this, you’ll be unhappy. And I don’t want you to be unhappy."

"But in your heart, Jett Sterling’s position is far more important than mine. So compared to him, my feelings don’t matter to you, right?"

Vivian Quinn lowered her gaze and said nothing.

Mason watched the wind lift the long strands of hair by her ear, and his own heart ached so much it felt like it would suffocate him. "Vivian, your silence is an admission."

Vivian Quinn bowed her head even lower. "I’m sorry..."

"I understand." Mason closed his eyes in pain. "You can go."

Vivian Quinn slowly raised her head. "Mason, if Jett Sterling’s offer of money insulted you, I can apologize to you on his behalf. I’m not going to say something like ’I want us to stay friends,’ because that would probably just hurt you more. But I sincerely hope you’ll be happy. That you’ll be very, very happy."

With that, Vivian Quinn stood up to leave.

She had only taken two steps when a familiar figure suddenly appeared right before her eyes!
