Chapter 83: Chapter 83: Let’s Start Over

Easton Rivers said hesitantly, "Your wife was at the hospital for a while, and then... she went out to eat with a man."

Jett Sterling’s brow furrowed deeper. "What man?"

"It’s not clear yet."

"Photos."

Easton Rivers handed him the photos that had been secretly taken by the bodyguard assigned to follow Vivian Quinn.

The pictures showed Vivian Quinn entering a restaurant with a young man. They went into a private room, so it was impossible to see what was going on inside.

Jett Sterling’s grip on the phone tightened, his handsome face growing dark and taut.

Easton Rivers suddenly felt the pressure in the room become so suffocating he could barely breathe. "Master Sterling, I’ll go investigate right now."

Jett Sterling handed the phone back to him. "Get out."

"Yes, sir."

...

It was already evening by the time Vivian Quinn returned to the hospital.

Jett Sterling was lying in bed, an IV drip in his arm.

"How are you feeling?" Vivian Quinn asked as she walked over.

"Hungry." The man looked at her, his face devoid of expression. "Feed me."

"Okay." Vivian Quinn could clearly tell he was in a bad mood, but she didn’t press for details.

’Injured this badly, of course he wasn’t going to be in a good mood.’

The meal, prepared by Nanny Jenner, was very light. Vivian Quinn fed Jett Sterling one spoonful at a time and asked, "I went to see Joy at the hospital today and found out someone had paid her medical bills. It was you, right?"

His expression was impassive. "It was nothing. Don’t worry about it."

"You might think it’s nothing, but it isn’t to me. I’ll find a way to pay you back as soon as I can."

"You don’t have an income. How are you going to pay me back?" Jett Sterling looked at her, displeased. "By asking Shane Shaw for it? Or some other man? Then you’ll give their money to me?"

Vivian Quinn was completely confused. "Jett, what’s gotten into you?"

"Who did you have dinner with today."

"With my attending physician. He came back from abroad to perform my surgery."

Jett Sterling frowned. "Surgery on your leg?"

"Yes."

"Are you two close?"

"He’s performed two surgeries on me since my accident, so I’d say we’re pretty familiar. Besides, he’s always been a great help with Joy’s condition. He’s been a lifesaver for both me and my sister."

"A lifesaver?" Jett Sterling’s face was grim. "It’s not like you aren’t paying the medical bills. Is there a need to be so dramatic?"

Vivian Quinn put another spoonful of food in his mouth. "Jett, where is all this hostility coming from?"

"...I’ve made myself perfectly clear, and you still think this is coming from nowhere? I don’t like you seeing other men, let alone having dinner alone with one!"

Vivian Quinn: "..."

It finally dawned on her. ’He’s jealous!’

"But... we’re about to get a divorce," Vivian Quinn said in a small voice.

Jett Sterling’s expression turned even uglier. "We’re not divorced yet, so you’re still my wife! I forbid you from meeting and eating with other men!"

Vivian Quinn tried to soothe him. "I know, I know. Don’t get worked up. Be careful you don’t tear your stitches!"

Only then did Jett Sterling’s mood improve slightly. "I’m full. You can eat now."

"I’m not hungry."

"You’ll eat even if you’re not hungry. I’ll watch you."

Forced by Jett Sterling, Vivian Quinn managed to eat a large bowl of rice and a good portion of the side dishes.

...

At four in the morning, Vivian Quinn woke from a nightmare, gasping for breath.

She closed her eyes for a moment, then got up to take a shower and wash away the cold sweat.

The sky outside was turning a pale grey. Not feeling sleepy, Vivian Quinn went to the adjacent hospital room.

The man in the bed was fast asleep. Vivian Quinn slowed the IV drip slightly, then sat down to take his pulse.

The sleeping man’s eyes slowly opened, and he stared at her, unmoving.

Vivian Quinn suddenly felt a burning gaze on her. Her fingertips trembled, and she quickly pulled her hand back. "Did I wake you?"

"No." Jett Sterling tried to take her hand, but she dodged him.

"Jett," she said, her eyes downcast and her voice soft, "I’m so grateful that you risked everything to save me, but I’m not worth it. This isn’t the first time you’ve been hurt because of me, and it gets more serious each time. That’s not a good sign. If you believe in things like fate or chemistry, you’d know ours is bad. I just bring you danger."

"Vivian, I’m not afraid." Jett Sterling looked at her. "That night... I didn’t get to tell you. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been with another man, or if you’ve had a child. You are still my wife."

Vivian Quinn’s head snapped up, and she stared at him in disbelief. "How is that possible... How could you possibly not mind!"

"I never said I don’t mind. I’m not a saint. I’m angry and I’m hurt, and I want to find that man and tear him limb from limb!" Jett Sterling gave a bitter laugh. "But Vivian, more than any of that, I’m filled with regret. I regret that I wasn’t there to protect you when it happened. If only I had shown up sooner, you wouldn’t have had to endure the most painful thing a girl could ever go through."

"Vivian, we’re husband and wife. From the moment I decided to marry you, I was prepared to accept all of you—not just your good side, but your dark side, too."

"So, Vivian, can we please just forget all this? If you don’t want to be in Aethelgard, we can leave. We can go somewhere no one knows us and start over."

Tears were already streaming down Vivian Quinn’s face. She shook her head violently, breaking down into sobs. "Jett, I’m begging you, please stop! I’m not worth it! I’m not worth you being so good to me!"

"I’ll be the judge of whether you’re worth it or not!" Jett Sterling reached out and grabbed her wrist. "Vivian, don’t put yourself down. You’re not dirty. In my heart, you’re the most beautiful thing there is. Promise me you’ll forget this. Let’s just live our lives together, okay?"

"No..." Vivian Quinn struggled out of his grasp, getting up and taking two steps back, her voice trembling. "It’s not like that. You can’t be like this. What kind of woman couldn’t you find? Why does it have to be me?"

"Vivian, why don’t you understand?" A flash of pain crossed the man’s eyes. "If it wasn’t you, I never would have gotten married in the first place. The person I’ve wanted, from start to finish, has only ever been you!"

Vivian Quinn was completely stunned, but she still shook her head firmly. "We can’t go back, Jett. It already happened. That child, with an unknown father... it was real. It existed inside my body. Even if we leave here and escape the scornful looks, that doesn’t mean it just goes away. Do you understand?"

"Right now, I can’t even hold your hand, hug you, or kiss you. Because I really feel so, so dirty. The better you are to me, the more I can’t face you. I just want to get away from you, as far as possible."

Jett Sterling’s heart felt as if it had been brutally stabbed. The pain made it hard for him to breathe. "Vivian, give me a chance. I’ll help you forget this nightmare."

Vivian Quinn covered her ears. "Jett, just let me go. And let yourself go, too. When you’ve recovered, we’ll get a divorce. I’m begging you..."
