Chapter 80: 76 Cute Woman

The nights in Paigou Village were filled with only the sounds of insects and frogs, their calls resonating clearly through the darkness.

Wang Jian held Xu Qian, the two of them lying together in silence. The only sounds were the chirping outside the window and the soft rhythm of each other’s breathing. At this moment, they both felt a profound sense of comfort and peace.

"Xiao Jian," Xu Qian murmured, her forefinger tracing idle circles on his chest. Her gaze was fixed on the movement as she lay upon him. "What do you think we should do in the future?"

It’s said that people tend to ponder life at night, especially in a moment of post-coital clarity. Wang Jian’s mind went blank. The question was simply too difficult to answer.

Before he could speak, Xu Qian continued, "I talked with Li Liping all night a few days ago. I had already told her that I planned to get a divorce and be with you." She paused, then asked, "You wouldn’t look down on me for being a divorced woman, would you?"

"Of course not," Wang Jian said, shaking his head. He nearly sat up, but Xu Qian was resting on him, so he couldn’t move. "Why would you even think that? Do I seem like that kind of person?"

"I know you wouldn’t." Xu Qian looked up at him, her eyes seeming to glow in the dim light. "But... I don’t know how things ended up like this. It seems so difficult to get a divorce now."

Wang Jian fell silent. Given Wang Xiang’s current state, finalizing a divorce would indeed be hard.

"Besides," Xu Qian went on, "news of Wang Xiang’s situation has already spread all over the village. If I divorce him now, what will the villagers say about me?"

She left unsaid what would happen if her affair with Wang Jian also came to light. It wouldn’t just be a joke then; she might have to move away to escape the scandal.

Wang Jian had considered this as well. He mentally drafted and discarded several replies, but in the end, he struggled to find anything meaningful to say. Unwittingly, he and his sister-in-law had found themselves in an incredibly awkward situation.

The awkwardness didn’t end there. After a brief silence, Xu Qian spoke up again. "With this scandal in our family, there are going to be a lot of eyes on us. We should probably avoid being seen together too often in the future, just in case... It’s not my own reputation I’m worried about. I’ve heard them talk about me for years and I’m used to it. I’m worried about you. Your career is just starting. If something like this got out, it could end up on the news."

Suddenly, she propped herself up. Moonlight washed over her as she said with utmost seriousness, "How about this... why don’t you find a woman and pretend to date her, just for show?"

"Can you even pretend to do that?" Wang Jian rolled his eyes. Xu Qian had spoken so quickly he hadn’t had a chance to interrupt.

As if on cue, Xu Qian’s own expression admitted that it was a foolish idea, and she collapsed back down in defeat. "Sigh, you’re right. It’s not something to be taken so lightly. But if there was another single woman with you, then we wouldn’t have to worry so much about the rumors."

This bizarre logic made Wang Jian laugh out loud. He never would have imagined such an immature idea coming from Xu Qian. In his eyes, his sister-in-law had always been someone who managed the household meticulously. She was educated, with her own well-formed opinions and insights. He was shocked she could suggest something so naive.

Xu Qian slapped him lightly. "I’m trying to think of a solution for you, what are you laughing at, you rascal?"

"What nonsense are you spouting?" Wang Jian replied, annoyed. "If I date someone else, what about you?"

He rolled his eyes again. She was so foolishly selfless, it was almost cute. How could a thought that completely disregarded her own feelings even enter her head?

"I was just joking, don’t take it seriously," Xu Qian said quickly, trying to backtrack. She put on an air of someone testing him. "I just wanted to see if you’d fall for it."

If Wang Jian hadn’t felt the heat radiating from her cheeks, he might have actually believed her.

"Alright, let’s just be more careful," Wang Jian said, patting her on the back to put an end to the topic. "If my brother comes to his senses and we still can’t get a divorce, we’ll file for one. The matter can be settled in court."

After he said this, they both fell silent. Honestly, neither of them wanted to take it to court. The more low-key they kept this, the better it would be for them. If it were handled publicly, they would truly have no place left here.

If it came to leaving their hometown... Gossip is a fearsome thing. I can’t afford to underestimate its power.

They fell asleep just like that and woke up the next morning.

Since Xu Qian was feeling much better, Wang Jian returned to handling matters at the clinic. The week was almost over, and in a few days, he was scheduled to give Cai Xing his second treatment. It seemed his days of slacking off were numbered.

On his way to the clinic, Wang Jian ran into Li Liping, who was returning with groceries. He was about to greet her and chat, but she blushed and ran off.

Wang Jian was stunned by her reaction. Even if she was trying to avoid the topic of Zhang Li, there was no reason for her to blush. No matter how hard he racked his brain, he never would have guessed that someone had been eavesdropping on him and Xu Qian last night.

Compared to Li Liping, Ren Yu was much more normal. She arrived early to sweep the clinic and chatted with Wang Jian, just like any other day. When no one was around, they didn’t need to do much besides sit and talk.

A hint of curiosity flickered in Wang Jian’s eyes. He had interacted with Ren Yu a bit before going to the city, and he had always been curious about some of her physical reactions. How could this girl react like a cat or a dog, seeming to crave being petted? This puzzled him. Although he had mentally prepared himself, he couldn’t help but be curious.

"Xiao Yu," Wang Jian called out. When she looked over, he continued, "I’ve noticed you seem to really like having your head patted."

Wang Jian was deliberately poking a sore spot.

Sure enough, upon hearing this, Ren Yu fell silent. Her face flushed, and she began to bite her lip.

Wang Jian asked, "Does it feel nice?"

Ren Yu pouted slightly and nodded. "Yeah, it does. But I only like it when you pat my head, just like when we were little."

"Are you a cat?" Wang Jian asked again, a playful glint in his eyes. "You’re just like a little cat in that state, nuzzling up and begging your owner for a touch. It feels good, doesn’t it?" 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

Ren Yu never expected Wang Jian to ask such a direct question. She wanted to say yes but was too embarrassed. Instead, she just lowered her head and fell silent.

With just a glance, Wang Jian understood. He’d guessed right.

Ren Yu cursed silently under her breath, unused to him being so direct. With a flushed face, she retorted, "Stop talking nonsense. You’re the cat."

"Hehe, whatever you say," Wang Jian chuckled. He heard footsteps outside, so he gave Ren Yu one last meaningful look, deciding not to tease her further, and turned his head toward the door.

Ren Yu gritted her teeth in frustration, her expression not looking very cat-like at all. She wasn’t really like a cat; cats were aloof and not clingy. She, on the other hand, felt she was very clingy and not aloof at all... But even as she thought this, she kept staring at Wang Jian, adding a silent amendment: she was only clingy with Brother Jian.

The clinic door was pushed open, and in walked Cai Qiong, Cai Xing’s daughter.

"Hey, I hope I’m not disturbing you?" As soon as she entered, Cai Qiong took in their microexpressions and immediately sensed something was off. "Looks like I came at a bad time."
