Chapter 81: 77 girlfriends

Ren Yu didn’t have much of a reaction, just a slight flush on her face as her gaze flitted briefly toward Wang Jian. To a normal person, it would seem like they were just chatting.

But Cai Qiong was different. She was a specialist in human psychology. Within psychology, there’s a field of study with a specific methodology dedicated to analyzing micro-expressions. When Cai Qiong studied abroad, academic majors were divided into incredibly specific fields, often linking directly to career paths. Upon deciding to become a psychologist, she chose this specialization. Her greatest takeaway from years of study was the ability to glean a wealth of information from people’s behaviors and expressions.

As soon as she pushed the door open, her eyes were drawn to the somewhat flustered girl.

Of course, an unspoken, ambiguous atmosphere already hung between Wang Jian and Ren Yu. Since Cai Qiong wasn’t familiar with either of them, her perspective as a complete outsider allowed her to see things that people close to them couldn’t. However, Cai Qiong saw even more. In her eyes, Wang Jian and Ren Yu were in that ambiguous stage of a relationship—intimate, but afraid of being discovered. Only that could explain their reactions.

"I hope I’m not disturbing you," Cai Qiong said with a laugh. Before she even finished speaking, she had already made herself at home, finding a place to sit. She then turned to Wang Jian with a smile. "I was going to call you in advance, but I happened to be in town meeting an old classmate, so I just came straight over." After speaking, she glanced at the still-standing Ren Yu and asked with a smile, "So, is this your girlfriend?"

Cai Qiong didn’t actually know if Wang Jian had a girlfriend, but she had heard a rumor at the City Hospital that he had brought his girlfriend with him. That was why she asked the question.

Wang Jian was stunned. Before he could respond, Ren Yu was already shaking her head. "Who’s his girlfriend? Don’t talk nonsense."

Although she said this, her gaze toward Cai Qiong was clearly that of someone who senses a threat, so her tone wasn’t particularly polite. "Wang Jian is clearly single. Where would he get a girlfriend? You can’t just make things up," Ren Yu said, narrowing her eyes. Her look was somewhat unfriendly, like a protective cat.

"Oh?" Cai Qiong was a little surprised. After all, she’d learned about the girlfriend during a background check, so it should have been the most up-to-date information. But judging by Ren Yu’s and Wang Jian’s reactions, it didn’t seem like they were lying. This made Cai Qiong intensely curious about the identity of the woman who had accompanied Wang Jian to the Central Hospital. The more interesting the subject, the more intrigued and delighted she became.

What a perfect subject for psychological research.

With such a golden opportunity, Cai Qiong certainly wasn’t going to press the topic. She immediately changed her tune. "It seems I was mistaken. Is it just the two of you at this village clinic?"

Seeing Cai Qiong shift the topic, Wang Jian breathed a sigh of relief. He really didn’t want everyone to find out about his sister-in-law just yet.

"Having two people in a village clinic is already pretty good," Wang Jian retorted. "What did you expect? This isn’t one of your big city hospitals. When in Rome, do as the Romans do, you know? Anyway, what brings you here?"

"Hey, we just talked about this yesterday. Don’t tell me you’ve already forgotten," Cai Qiong said, glaring at him fiercely. "You promised to be my research subject."

"Of course, I remember," Wang Jian nodded with a smile. "I’m just reminding you: observe all you want, research all you want, but don’t look down on my little clinic, and watch what you say."

After saying this, Wang Jian shot Cai Qiong a meaningful look. His only goal was to get her to stop running her mouth; her sudden mention of a girlfriend had truly rattled him.

Cai Qiong caught his look, but with a slight smile, she pretended not to understand. "Oh? Did I hurt your precious pride by looking down on you?"

Wang Jian shrugged. Cai Qiong was actually a bit older than him, so he didn’t feel the need to be guarded. "Yeah, that’s right," he shot back. "It’s only normal for a big-shot Harvard graduate like you to look down on us."

"Stop messing around," Cai Qiong laughed, giving Wang Jian a light pat on the arm. "You’re the real big shot. I learned plenty from my dad before I came here. Why else do you think I’d be interested in you?"

"Interested?" Ren Yu, who had been watching Cai Qiong intently, bristled like a cat whose fur had been stroked the wrong way. "What do you mean by that?" she asked, her brow furrowing slightly as she looked at Wang Jian.

Wang Jian had no idea she was reading so much into it and simply explained, "Let me introduce you. You know Chairman Cai, right?"

Ren Yu nodded, turning her gaze back to Cai Qiong. Now that Wang Jian had mentioned it, she saw a flicker of familiarity in Cai Qiong’s features.

Wang Jian continued, "Her name is Cai Qiong, Chairman Cai’s daughter. She studied psychology in the United Kingdom and has a PhD. She has deep expertise in clinical psychology. The situation with my older brother was resolved thanks to a report she provided, and she’ll also be in charge of his follow-up treatment. That’s why I agreed to be her research subject."

"Research subject?" Seeing Ren Yu was still puzzled, Cai Qiong took the initiative to explain. "Don’t worry, being a research subject for psychology isn’t like being in a clinical trial. There’s no surgery or anything. It’s just an observation period with some comprehensive assessments and discussions about his psychology and behavior. It won’t cause any harm. It’s purely for academic research."

"You don’t think Wang Jian has a mental illness, do you?" Even after her initial question was answered, Ren Yu’s wariness toward this woman hardly diminished. After all, it seemed completely inappropriate for such a beautiful woman to be showing so much interest in Wang Jian.

"Not at all," Cai Qiong laughed heartily. She had noticed Ren Yu’s subtle suspicions, which only made her find the situation more amusing. "In today’s society, everyone has some psychological quirks. That doesn’t mean it’s an illness, and that’s not my main goal anyway. A person’s personality, their thought processes, and their actions—that’s what I find most interesting. Do you understand what I’m saying?"

Understand? Impossible. I’m not some simple, naive girl who believes a woman would follow a man all the way out here just for ’research.’ This is obviously not normal. Only a dense guy like Wang Jian wouldn’t see through her tricks. I might be young, but I’m not so gullible that I can be easily fooled, nor am I foolish enough to just blurt out what I’m thinking.

So, Ren Yu just smiled sweetly and asked Cai Qiong, "Oh, I see! So, how long do you plan on conducting this research?"

"Well..." Cai Qiong mused for a moment. "I’m not sure yet. I have to check on Wang Xiang’s condition every two days, so I can’t be here researching all the time. As for how long it will take, that also depends on Wang Jian’s own willingness and the circumstances."

Seeing Ren Yu visibly relax, Cai Qiong felt a growing desire to tease her. She continued, "Of course, from my personal point of view, the longer the research, the better. It would be ideal if we could live together day in and day out, like family. The closer I am, the better I can understand my subject’s psychological state."

What the hell! Ren Yu’s eyes widened. On the surface, she remained calm, but inside, she was already cursing up a storm. She clenched her small fists, wishing she could just demand to know what Cai Qiong’s real intentions were. The prettier the woman, the bigger the liar. She was quite beautiful herself, so she understood this saying deeply—because she was an expert liar too. The way she acted at school was completely different from how she was in front of Wang Jian. It’s just a reasonable disguise. Nothing wrong with that, right?

Ren Yu inconspicuously glanced at Wang Jian. She was still very hung up on the "girlfriend" Cai Qiong had mentioned, even if she didn’t let it show.

But Wang Jian went to the hospital yesterday with his sister-in-law. His sister-in-law, Xu Qian. Surely she can’t be his girlfriend, right?
