Chapter 181: 176 to hell with the ex

After leaving the hotel, Wang Jian hailed a rideshare and headed directly to the location Peng Qing had mentioned. He was quite lucky, as the app upgraded his ride to a luxury car. When it arrived, it was a Mercedes.

There was nothing particularly special about that; Wang Jian had even seen people use Ferraris for rideshares before. At first, he hadn’t understood the mentality of those drivers, but he eventually figured it out, and he had his ex-girlfriend to thank for that. These Ferrari drivers were either bored and looking for fun, streamers trying to create buzz, or second-generation trust fund kids trying to pick up girls. While not a one-hundred-percent success rate, they probably succeeded ninety-nine times out of a hundred. It was just a fact of life, and nothing to be surprised about. When Wang Jian had heard about it, the news didn’t cause any ripples for him. It seemed people nowadays were accustomed to such things.

The place he was headed to was an estate. In a place like Capital City, any location with "estate" in its name was no simple matter. This particular estate, however, wasn’t one of those grand European manors with a castle. In this country, "estates" were typically high-end venues similar to private clubs. The Qingsong Manor that Peng Qing had mentioned was a relatively obscure place; someone like Wang Jian, with no money or influence, had never even heard of it before today.

The driver of this luxury car, however, was particularly interesting.

"Is this estate open?"

"Hmm?" Wang Jian, who had been lost in thought, was startled by the driver’s question and stared blankly for a moment. "What?"

"This Qingsong Manor," the driver said. He was a man in his forties, dressed in a white polo shirt and sunglasses. Paired with the car, he fit the perfect image of a successful man. His voice was also quite deep. Remembering the stories about wealthy drivers looking to pick up girls, Wang Jian couldn’t help but wonder if this man was doing the same.

"It stopped taking customers several years ago. I don’t know if it shut down for good or what," the driver rambled on, his driving perfectly steady. "When I got your ride request today, I thought I was seeing things. Young man, are you going to the estate for dinner or for fun?"

"Fun?" The word caught Wang Jian by surprise. He had nothing to hide, though. "I didn’t realize you could go there for fun. A friend invited me; I’d never heard of the place before. Is it that famous?"

A few years ago, Wang Jian had still been a student. He was either at university studying Chinese medicine with his teacher, holed up in the library, or traveling across the country with his mentor, trekking through mountains and wilds. While his medical skills advanced by leaps and bounds, his connection to the outside world was almost completely severed. His worldview was shaped almost entirely by what he saw and learned at his mentor’s side. He had, however, matured considerably as a person. As for this Qingsong Manor, he knew nothing. He had, on the other hand, heard a little about a place called Heavenly Life.

The driver didn’t find it strange that Wang Jian was clueless. Instead, he explained, "It’s normal for young people like you not to know. Even a few years ago, the estate was only open to members. Later, I heard it was bought out by some big shot, and then it closed to members, too. I thought it was gone for good, but I guess it reopened. I just never heard the news. This Qingsong Manor is a really nice place. It’s far from the city and all the noise, perfect for calming your mind and spirit, having some tea, and just relaxing."

Wang Jian glanced at the driver. If my guess is correct, the ’big shot’ this driver mentioned is most likely Peng Qing. The timing from a few years ago lines up perfectly with when Peng Pingan’s problems started. It wouldn’t be strange for Peng Qing to buy a place suitable for quiet recuperation for his son.

As the Mercedes drove on, Wang Jian realized the driver was right. They had left the urban sprawl far behind and were now passing small hills and rolling landscapes. A place with scenery like this was definitely not in the bustling part of Capital City; ordinary people had no reason to come out this far.

"Young man, we’re almost there," the driver said, pointing to an intersection ahead. "See it?"

Where he pointed was an intersection, but Wang Jian noticed it was blocked off by a large, classical-style gate. A few people were standing near the entrance, looking in their direction as if waiting for someone.

"I can’t drive in. Is it okay if I drop you at the gate?" the driver asked.

"That’s fine."

The car slowed down, still smooth as ever, and pulled over at the gate, letting Wang Jian out. The driver was an interesting character. After Wang Jian got out, he didn’t rush off. Just as Wang Jian suspected, he was just out to kill time and wasn’t in a hurry to find his next fare. He pulled the car over to the side of the road and took out his phone, likely to ask his friends about Qingsong Manor. He had just started to do so when he paused, spotting someone at the gate.

The kid I picked up is actually being welcomed inside. And the person standing at the gate to greet him... I think I know him. At first, he thought he was seeing things.

Peng Qing? What the fuck?!

Despite years of cultivating his composure, the driver couldn’t help but blurt out a curse.

Who is this kid, that Peng Qing himself would wait at the gate for him? He now realized that Qingsong Manor hadn’t reopened at all; it was still a private residence. As far as he knew, the person who had bought it years ago was this very Peng Qing. The man’s identity was well-known among the elite circles of Capital City, which was precisely why seeing him come out to greet someone was so astonishing.

What in the world... Don’t tell me I’ve run into another nutcase like me, just killing time by ’experiencing life’? In any case, he had no idea who Wang Jian was.

Wang Jian hadn’t expected Peng Qing to come out to meet him either. After a brief, polite exchange, they entered the manor together. It was only then that Wang Jian realized just how much the so-called famous doctors had been bothering Peng Qing. He was so unwilling to stay in the same room with them that he had come out to wait much earlier than necessary.

The manor was enormous. Just inside the gate was a vast, open space like a public square. To have such an expansive estate in this prime, expensive location was truly incredible. Peng Qing explained that it was once a prince’s villa from ancient times, which accounted for its grand scale. It featured classical garden designs, and the elegant, tranquil environment made it an excellent place for recuperation. It had to be said that Peng Qing had sacrificed a great deal for his son.

However, after following Peng Qing into the manor, something even more unexpected happened—he saw a familiar face.

"Zhang Anjia?!"

"Wang Jian?!"

This woman was, without a doubt, the last person Wang Jian ever wanted to see. Seeing her now, he felt nothing but disgust.
