Chapter 182: 177 Unlucky Ex

"Damn it!"

Standing beside Wang Jian, Peng Qing heard the muttered curse and saw him frown and roll his eyes. In an instant, he had pinpointed the object of Wang Jian’s disdain.

Peng Qing had no recollection of the woman. She wasn’t one of the renowned doctors he had invited, so she must have been brought here by someone else. She was possibly an assistant or a student, so Peng Qing hadn’t paid her any mind. After a second glance, however, he noticed she was quite attractive.

Judging by Wang Jian’s reaction, he knew this woman must have some history with him. Whatever that history was, Wang Jian clearly disliked her now, and that was enough for Peng Qing to start contemplating how to make her leave.

With his experience, he could tell that while this woman, Zhang Anjia, was young, tall, and curvaceous, her gaze was constantly sizing everyone up, as if assessing their qualifications and abilities. In Peng Qing’s eyes, her prettiness was overshadowed by a fox-like cunning. She gave him the impression of a wily veteran of the business world—not a good match for a man with Wang Jian’s personality.

In just a moment, Peng Qing had roughly figured out why Wang Jian despised this woman. But he didn’t ask Wang Jian about it, choosing instead to feign ignorance. From this day on, however, this woman would never again appear anywhere Peng Qing was, especially not when Wang Jian was also present.

"What are you doing here?"

The question was Zhang Anjia’s immediate reaction to seeing Wang Jian, the words slipping out before she could stop them. It was one of those thoughts that was harmless when kept to oneself, but saying it aloud was another matter entirely. She realized her mistake as soon as she spoke, especially upon seeing the figure standing next to Wang Jian.

"Uh... I just didn’t expect that we would meet again here," Zhang Anjia quickly corrected herself, but her expression remained one of surprise. Her gaze lingered on Wang Jian, scrutinizing and clearly full of doubt.

While she was clearly focused on Wang Jian, his reaction was one of complete indifference. After she spoke, he merely glanced at her before following Peng Qing, pointedly walking around Zhang Anjia. From the beginning of their interaction to the end, he had only said her name once. Beyond that, Wang Jian had no desire to say anything more.

As the group walked away, Zhang Anjia was left standing there, her face flushed with embarrassment. Her mouth opened as if to say more, but she held back as she watched their retreating backs.

Inside, Zhang Anjia was seething with indignation, but she said nothing. She just furrowed her brows and narrowed her eyes, displaying no other reaction.

However, when she watched Wang Jian and his group enter a particular room, her expression changed again. That was the room where the renowned doctors were staying.

She recognized Peng Qing. Today wasn’t her first visit; she’d had access to that room before, so she knew what was inside. After Mr. Peng’s son fell gravely ill, he had been convalescing in there. She was only able to be here because she had become the disciple of a famous master, which granted her access.

According to her teacher, Mr. Peng’s son had contracted a severe disease that world-renowned doctors had failed to cure, leading to the hospital issuing a notice of critical illness. Just when the patient seemed to have only days left to live, he went out to clear his head, and by the time he returned, he had been miraculously cured.

Not just her teacher, but every doctor involved in the treatment effort was astonished. Their astonishment was quickly followed by immense curiosity.

"If I knew who saved this child, I’d definitely want to have a good talk with him."

"Only a Great Master could have such skill."

"But it’s strange. Even those great figures looked at this illness and were helpless."

"So it’s still unknown who exactly has such ability."

"It could also be the discovery of something new, potentially leading to a groundbreaking paper."

These were her teacher’s exact words. It was precisely for this reason that Zhang Anjia was here today. Upon learning of the situation, she felt it was an opportunity. Whether she could get her name on any resulting paper was uncertain, but at the very least, she could broaden her horizons and was certain to learn something new.

In fact, what Zhang Anjia considered even more important was meeting this doctor, who was clearly more skilled than so many other famous physicians. If she could get to know him, even just a little, it would be a tremendous help to her future.

But she never expected to run into Wang Jian here.

And judging by Mr. Peng’s demeanor, Wang Jian was clearly important—far more important than she was. Even among the doctors in that room, only one or two had ever received such deferential treatment from Mr. Peng.

After calming down, Zhang Anjia carefully replayed what she had just seen in her mind.

It seems... Mr. Peng’s attitude towards Wang Jian is different from his attitude towards the other doctors?

Zhang Anjia furrowed her brows. She wasn’t even allowed into that room today, so on what grounds did Wang Jian get to enter? Then, a sudden realization struck her.

She covered her mouth to keep from making a sound, her eyes wide with shock. No way! It can’t be! How could he possibly be that doctor?

The thought had no sooner emerged than she was vehemently shaking her head, dismissing it. How is that possible? He’s so young, and his grades in school weren’t even that good. Besides, he studied Chinese medicine. It’s impossible...

Somehow, after denying this thought, Zhang Anjia felt a strange sense of relief. When she had broken up with Wang Jian, the reason she had given was that Chinese medicine had no future. Her current thinking was simple: anything else was fine, but she absolutely could not be proven wrong.

No matter how skilled Wang Jian became in Chinese medicine, he couldn’t possibly cure a terminal illness overnight. After all, Zhang Anjia knew a bit about Chinese medicine; its treatments were known for being slow and gradual.

Zhang Anjia exhaled and felt herself relax, resuming her wait. She decided to stand right there, waiting for the mysterious doctor to arrive. She had to see who this person really was.

But as she waited, no further movement came from the mansion’s entrance. The room they had entered, however, became increasingly lively.

As soon as Wang Jian walked in, the doctors in the room gathered around.

"Mr. Peng?" one of them asked.

"Is this the Doctor Wang you mentioned?" another chimed in.

"I know you wouldn’t joke about this, but..." a third began, trailing off.

Wang Jian glanced around, taking in the conference-room-sized space. He counted twelve doctors. He recognized half of them as well-known figures from Capital City. He didn’t recognize the other half by sight, but he knew them by reputation. Among the group were two or three blonde, blue-eyed foreigners whose faces were also familiar.

Seeing a few of them was particularly surprising for Wang Jian, as he recognized their faces from photos in foreign medical textbooks. He had not expected to meet them in person here. He knew that anyone capable of authoring internationally published medical textbooks held a high status in the global medical community.

As he observed these masters, they were also observing him. The ones running their mouths and questioning his identity were not among these senior figures.

This taught Wang Jian a valuable lesson: no matter where you are, it’s always the empty vessels that make the most noise.

This brief observation was enough for Wang Jian to get a rough gauge of the skill levels of everyone in the room.
