Chapter 255: The Meeting In Helheim [ 19 ]

After leaving the meeting room, the four of us just walked ahead aimlessly, passing through the hallways of several dozen palaces. I wasn’t really sure where we were headed, but I didn’t dare say anything, since I was still recovering.

Though, as I glanced to the side and spotted the roughed-up Alexius, I couldn’t help but inwardly chuckle. He was such a tough big shot, and yet, in the face of a Demon King and a Demon Emperor, he was nothing but an ant.

Had our roles been reversed, that would’ve been me licking my wounds. But then again, doesn’t he also have access to Divine Energy? Why wasn’t he a savior like the rest of us?

It’s not like he’s weak to begin with...

As I was lost in my thoughts, Ren suddenly halted. He turned to the left and slowly approached a steel door. Once he was right beside it, he turned back to me.

"You know, I never really got to know you that well, except for the time Wilhelm gave me some information a couple dozen years ago. You were still a little boy at that time. But not just any boy could impress a Demon King."

I didn’t say a word, since I didn’t understand what he was trying to get at.

That was until he reminded me of something.

"Are you still cooperating solely because Wilhelm has the souls of your parents, or have those motivations changed now?"

Right.

That’s why the original Amon agreed to this deal in the first place.

But I wasn’t the same Amon.

"I’d rather not answer."

"Yeah, you don’t have to. On another note, I’d like to introduce you to my personal treasury."

With those words, the steel door suddenly opened, revealing a large hallway decorated with dozens of different artifacts, weapons, and even skulls with some names carved into them. It really was a treasury.

"Wilhelm and Alexius, you two stay outside. Amon, you may enter with me."

He stepped inside, and after a few seconds, I followed him in. When he closed the door, he exhaled a relieved breath and said:

"Considering I’m serious about what I offered you, I’d like you to choose anything that’s in this room. It must be one thing, and one thing only. Feel free to look around~"

"..."

I was never one to shy away from freebies.

So with that in mind, I decided to take him up on his offer and look around. There were a few things that caught my interest right away, such as the demonic swords and even some armor. However, I already had armor, and as for the sword... I might just ask the dwarf to reforge my Clorafite into a solid sword.

After all, my Clorafite weapons were so-so at the moment. They still worked as defense, and offense was fine, but I always felt like my current set of abilities would benefit more from offense rather than defense.

And using a sword for offense was the best, at least in my case.

I touched the fabric of some of the armor, trying to see if it was better than mine. I even inspected a couple of books that were scattered around. They were mostly about the unfiltered history of the Demon Realm.

But some were technique books, focusing on manipulating all sets of Demonic Energy. Sadly, my Black Lightning, Telekinesis, and Sword Saint Gifts didn’t fall into any of the categories, so I couldn’t really utilize any of these techniques either.

And as I circled the treasury for a third time, I realized that there wasn’t actually anything that I really needed at the moment. As if understanding that as well, Ren coughed once and approached me.

"Can’t find anything?"

"No."

"Hmm~ Well, you’re a little cold, aren’t you? I do wonder sometimes, are you loyal to humans, or are you loyal to those you care about?"

I glanced at him.

"What does that matter?"

"It matters a lot, actually."

A wide smirk appeared on his face.

"Once I heard that our so-called traitorous savior, who I had personally sent Wilhelm out to kill, suddenly massacred over 100,000 barbarians... I was shocked. I mean, who in their righteous, human-loving mind would do something like that, right?"

He chuckled and added:

"That’s when I realized that your motivations are very easy to influence. You’re selfish, and like the selfish person that you are, that means so long as our agendas meet your own, you’ll have no reason to betray us. Isn’t that right?"

"Then that means, you have no qualm being with the demons, so long as the demons strive to kill people who harm both demons and humans... Pfft... It was such a simple fix all along."

"..."

I just stood there for a few moments, not saying anything.

He wasn’t wrong, in a way. So long as Clementine and her family were alive, I couldn’t care less about anyone else.

It’s just that... I wanted a world that wasn’t filled with death and destruction. A world where our future children could freely go to the academy, and then on expeditions, not having to worry about the threat of demons popping up during their expeditions and killing them all.

That’s all I ever wanted from the moment I fell in love with Clementine.

So I didn’t answer him outright, and instead, I looked away from him and continued searching the room again. Except this time, Ren followed after me.

Every now and again, he gave a suggestion, but I didn’t listen. Though I did find out that Ren had a preference for throwing knives, as he had much more of those than any other weapon. Not to mention, those were the only weapons he suggested.

But right as I was about to just wave the white flag, I abruptly halted, spotting something interesting in the back of the treasury.

On the shelf where most of the books were, there was a small section for charms. In that very same section, there was some kind of platinum monocle, and while I hadn’t noticed it before, now that I’d taken a closer look, I realized that the monocle contained an immense amount of energy.

So of course, I needed to now find out what it was.
