Chapter 247: Chapter 247: Lying

Clementine Coleman was skeptical, but she finally nodded. "I knew it, Rachel. You’re not the kind of petty person who’d kick someone when they’re down. Is that assistant of yours still around? Did you fire him? Anyone who just mocks others to get some attention isn’t a good person. Rachel, you really need to be more careful when you’re hiring assistants in the future."

The color drained from Renee Jennings’s face. "Well, my assistant really dislikes Naomi Kenway. After all, before things were cleared up, a lot of people thought Naomi was just a troublemaker."

Clementine Coleman only latched onto the first part. "He dislikes Naomi Kenway? You have even less reason to keep someone with such poor judgment!"

Renee Jennings forced a smile and said dryly, "Okay, I’ll fire him as soon as I get back."

"By the way, Rachel, when can I get that autographed photo of WK? Aren’t you two old friends? It’s been so long, and you still can’t get in touch with her?" Clementine Coleman complained, her face scrunching up in a pout. "I’m running out of patience."

Renee Jennings’s expression visibly stiffened. She subconsciously clutched her handbag. "Um... well, she’s so famous, after all. She has a lot of races overseas waiting for her. I can understand how you feel, Clementine, but you have to be a little more considerate. We can’t interfere with her performance."

"But weren’t there reports that WK came back to the country for a vacation a while ago? I saw it in the foreign media. How could she still be racing?" Clementine Coleman glanced sideways at Renee Jennings, her eyes filled with pure confusion.

"That..." Renee Jennings paused. "The foreign media always loves to make up gossip and blow things out of proportion. WK hasn’t returned to the country yet. She just called me a while ago and said she needs to train for a while longer before she can come back."

Clementine Coleman’s eyes lit up. "Rachel, can you let me say a few words to her? I’m a huge fan!"

A troubled look crossed Renee Jennings’s face. "That... I’m afraid that won’t work. You know she’s always been a bit of a maverick. She has an eccentric personality and doesn’t really like dealing with strangers."

"Alright... I won’t force her, then." Clementine Coleman reiterated, "But when she comes back to the country, Rachel, you have to help me get a personal autograph."

"Okay." Renee Jennings let out a visible sigh of relief.

Back home, Renee Jennings stared blankly at the photo she had with WK. The picture was taken a year ago on a street in a foreign country. She and Nathaniel were on their honeymoon and happened to see a crowd of people taking pictures with someone. On a whim, she pulled Nathaniel over to get a photo as well. All she remembered was that the person had a brilliant smile and was polite and enthusiastic.

It was only after returning to her country and seeing the news that Renee Jennings realized that person was a very famous race car driver. Driven by a certain vanity, she hung the photo in the living room, though not in a very prominent spot. After all, she needed the most central space to display Nathan Lynch’s various awards and certificates.

The Clementine Coleman Family was large and powerful. From the moment she had the opportunity to interact with them, Renee Jennings was determined to build a good relationship with their only daughter. And indeed, she had reaped plenty of benefits from Clementine, meeting many influential people. For Clementine’s sake, those people were willing to let Renee tag along.

She had married up into the Lynch Family, a glamorous and enviable match on the surface. In reality, the Lynches didn’t think much of her. Sophia Zobel was getting old and gradually stepped back from managing things. The eldest Lynch brother handled external business, while his wife, the eldest sister-in-law, managed internal family affairs. The sister-in-law was on good terms with Victor Vance and therefore couldn’t stand Renee, never bringing her to any business receptions. Nathaniel was also hopelessly passive, never fighting for anything for her. Thinking of this, Renee Jennings felt deeply wronged. She could only rely on her own methods to get ahead.

The first time Clementine Coleman visited her home, she had ignored all of Renee Jennings’s fawning and was only interested in the photo displayed in the corner of the living room. Renee, deciding to go all in, told a lie. That lie brought her relationship with Clementine one step closer.

’Who would have thought...’

Thinking of how Clementine had relentlessly hounded her on set today gave her a massive headache. A nameless panic swirled in her chest, a lingering gloom that wouldn’t dissipate. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

The bedroom door opened and a weary-looking Nathaniel walked in, a hint of impatience on his face. "Why did you call me over in such a hurry? Don’t you know I have a movie to film? You think everyone is as idle as you?"

Renee Jennings choked up, then said, "I’m sorry, Nathaniel. I’m just in a really bad mood."

Renee Jennings told him everything about the situation with Clementine Coleman.

As expected, she was met with a tirade from Nathaniel. "What the hell are you doing, Renee Jennings? Why did you use my name to tell a lie?! What if Clementine finds out? How am I supposed to show my face then?!"

"I... I just wanted to get closer to her at first. Who knew things would turn out like this? I didn’t expect her to be so serious about it, constantly hounding me about it..." Renee Jennings said, her voice full of grievance.

"You didn’t expect it? How many times have I told you to think things through before you act!"

"Why is your attitude toward me so awful?" Renee Jennings lifted her head, her voice a dissatisfied accusation. "Doesn’t everyone make mistakes? You clearly told me before that no matter what I did, you’d be by my side, always supporting and encouraging me."

Nathaniel felt utterly frustrated. "You can’t just keep bringing up things from the past. And I never realized you were this stupid before!"

"You..."

Renee Jennings froze, her eyes instantly turning red. "You’re starting to despise me now?"

Realizing he’d gone too far, Nathaniel gently put an arm around her shoulder and apologized. "I’m sorry. I’ve been too busy with work and I’m in a bad mood. Please try to understand."

Renee Jennings rested her head on his shoulder. Suddenly, she asked in confusion, "Did you change your cologne?"

Nathaniel’s body stiffened. He gently pushed her away. "I switched to a new one."

"This scent isn’t very nice. It’s too sweet. It doesn’t suit you. I’ll pick out a new one for you some other day."

Nathaniel nodded. "Okay."

Renee Jennings’s head drooped again. "What are we going to do? If it were just a regular signed photo, that would be one thing, but Clementine wants WK to write a specific message. We definitely can’t just buy one online." Suddenly, her eyes lit up and she looked at him expectantly. "Nathaniel, you’re so well-connected. Can’t you get in touch with WK?"

"Any other racer might be possible, but WK is very eccentric. She’s hard to get close to."

"What if we offer more money? Won’t more money work? Who could say no to money?"

Nathaniel shook his head, shooting down her idea. "Actually, there is someone. WK. I heard a fan once offered five million to have dinner with her, and she still refused. She’s from an incredibly wealthy family herself and just does whatever she wants. She has absolutely no interest in money."
