Chapter 77: A Royal Summon - I

The pounding did not stop which only meant that this was not a joke. "I should . ." Marilyn muttered as she stared at the door and then proceeded to get up slowly and did not take her eyes off of it.

"Stop!" I hissed at her and then stared back at the door. It was too dangerous for any of us to open the door at the moment. Who knew what was behind that door.

I stood up and walked to the door and Merilyn walked behind me. "Who is it?" I asked in a low yet firm voice. I was a bit scared too.

"Messenger." He answered immediately and I recognized his voice immediately. He was the ground that was with me when I went into the market of flash and when I was again escorted to the healer. He was the messenger?

I opened the door and narrowed my eyes at him. "What are you doing here, in the middle of the night? It does not portray a good image for any of us." For him, I was a lady belonging to a high house, so I had to keep it that way.

Even the messenger looked like he wanted to be anywhere but here. He nevertheless bowed his head in front of me apologetically. "Forgive me, my lady. I am well aware of what being at the door of a lady’s room at this hour means but the Prince has sent for you. Spare the messenger and kindly come with me."

’Kindly come with me’, he was just saying that so that I would come with him willingly and there would not be a scene created. I highly doubt that a man like the prince would take a no from a woman.

I glanced back at Marilyn who looked scared like a mouse who was in the grip of a cat ready to be eaten alive. Poor her.

"Wait here," I said to him and closed the door.

"Should I come with you?" Merilyn said with the slight shakiness in her voice. The night had already caused her so much instability and I did not want to trouble her anymore. She was scared and if I took her through any more adventures she would surely go mad.

"No," I have answered her as I went straight for my cloak. "I have put you through so much tonight as it is, you should go and take a rest."

"B-but," even though she was scared, Marilyn straightened her back and rested her hands beside her as it ready to go to war even though she was scared out of the soul. "I want to be there with you. I cannot leave you alone with the prince. There must be someone to chaperone on the meeting for the both of you and even if he has one of his men doing it, I want to be there for you, from your side."

I closed my eyes and laughed lightly at her words. "The both of us can be in the room only if the prince wants it, if he does not then he can have you thrown out of the room, my dear." I moved to the door but stopped in front of it and turned to Marilyn, "Do not open the door for anyone else unless it is me, alright?"

She nodded and unconsciously joined her hands in front of her as if she was praying for my safety and this was the last time I would be returning to her.

Silly girl, if I was dying then so was she.

I opened the door and noticed that the messenger had not moved from his place. "Let us go," I said and nodded at him.

I went willingly to the chambers of the printlce that I had grown used to and now remember the way very well. I could not help but keep the nervousness down buried inside me as I got closer to his chambers.

It would not be so soon that he would come to know about Tristan’s escape now, would he? There was no way that could be so soon—

I closed my eyes at the realization and wanted to hit myself hard or just peirce myself with the spike. Even though Konrad had told me that he had taken care of the man that I had injured in the present cell, I had never gone back there to check for myself. If the Prince had sent someone else over there he would have found out that guard was lying there unconscious and Tristan had disappeared.

I sighed quietly as the doors cme in front of me and realized that there was nothing I could do now because if I ran the man would catch me and forcefully bring me inside which would only add more to their suspicions.

He knocked on the door and announced my presence stepping in.

"My lady," he opened the door for me and stood aside allowing me to enter first.

I walked inside with my head held high and without any fear visible on my face. For all, I knew the prince was not even aware of it and if he were, he could not link me with that directly.

"Princess Genevieve," I heard a soft voice instead and watch shop at the person I saw sitting there instead of the man I was expecting. "How are you?"

I blinked a few times before answering her. I was still in shock. "I am well, Your Highness." I bowed in front of her slightly, not because I was in serious to her but simply out of respect of age. "How are you?" I said softly as I would whenever I would talk to an official. Grace and poise what do things a princess or any lady belonging to any house must possess.

She nodded, still staring at me. "Good, I am good." She pointed to the chair in front of her asking me to sit on it. "Have a seat. You and I have a lot to talk about."

I said down obediently. My hands were clasped in my lap and my back was straightened as was told numerous times to do by my governess.

"You asked for me, your highness? Do you mind me asking how were you aware of my presence in your palace?" My question had come out softly and with the utmost respect, I could gather for her. The last thing I wanted to happen was her taking any kind of offence from me. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

She laughed as the question did nothing but amused her to the greatest degree. "This palace is nothing but my home and I am well aware of what happens in these walls." She waved her hand with a smile on her face and placed it below her chin to privde support. "Also I can tell when my son is hiding something from me."

"Ah," I nodded. She must be a very good mother and queen if she knew everything that had happened inside the palace.

"Genevieve, I knew your mother and I sympathized with you greatly when I was made aware of her passing away. Young girls like you and your sisters were left alone and unsupervised which hurt and immediately but Queen Anastasia had taken care of it already." I nodded as my eyes met the floor for a quick moment when I tied together all my emotions and sat with my mind forward not my heart. I did not know what the queen was playing at which is why I could not trust her immediately.

"I thank you for your condolences, your highness. Queen Anastasia has been a great help in this time." Diplomatic answers were the best.

She hummed as if unhappy with it and she did not even hide it. "Queen Anastasia, as you must have heard one rumour or two, is a woman who controls her son like a puppet is to sit on the throne as a king." She spat with anger. Even though her words and emotions were controlled I could tell that this was not the composure a queen was supposed to have and that she had let go of it slightly.

I answered her but did not decline or confirm the rumors. "I have heard the rumors for I cannot confirm or deny any of this information. Forgive me, but I would have to see that for myself."

She smiled a genuine smile. "I have met your mother a handful of times, that I could count on my hands and even though she was sheltered she had a fire inside her. I see that inside you," she smiled and her eyes twinkled with the same maliciousness that her son possessed, "even though I know that Queen Anastasia would have tried to suppress it numerous times you still have it in you."

"And it is good?" I said after she finished her sentence even though it seemed to be highly uncertain.

"Oh darling, it is for the very best." She leaned back and a calm expression took over her face. "You are beautiful like I have heard. This is the first time that I have seen you after your mother’s death."

I bowed my head slightly in gratitude and look up straight into her eyes again.

"Humble, too." She laughed and a genuinely. "I like you, Genevieve, you, by the grace of God, would be a great queen."

"Of Astria." I completed her sentence as her expressions turned sour. "I am going to be the queen of Astria if everything goes well." I smiled slightly, letting her know of my thoughts before anything.

"Yes, yes," she muttered staring at me, "but I am sure your Kingdom would appreciate having new proposals and better opportunities sent to them." She said as she truly wanted the best for us.

Lord no, I had a slight idea that she would go down that road but it woule be this soon I had not realized. She did not even wait before telling me that she had other motives to continue this conversation.

This was going to be difficult.
