Chapter 30: Why Do You Keep Doing This To Me

The presentation of Einstein’s Mass-Energy Equivalence, commonly known as ‘E=mc²’, occurred about 1905 A.D.

Whenever I went around the capital, it would hit me how the civilization of the Empire was that of the early twentieth century by Earth’s standards. The progress of math and magic theories was also just about that level.

[■ Research complete : Magic Element-Energy Convertibility Theorem]

It wasn’t my ability that brought about the proving of this theorem this quickly. All I did was look at a prior research done by someone else and overlay an idea on top of it.

The exchange of mass and energy was a well-known fact in current physics.

The ‘Magic Element-Energy Convertibility Theorem’ implied that element and energy could be converted to one another. Energy became element, and element reverted back to energy.

In other words, after mass turned into energy, it was possible for that energy to change into an element.

The bottom line was that magic elements were exchangeable with mass. The loss of mass, which was a key process in nuclear fission or fusion, was the equivalent of loss of elements in this world. And since loss of mass and elements occurred simultaneously, the yield of a nuclear explosion could possibly be higher than in my original world.

It wasn’t a bad outcome. There needed to be that much explosive power to go up against a Cataclysm.

With the first step to preventing world destruction having been completed, sleep came over me. Lotte was already under the covers and off to dreamland. I fiddled with the two silver coins she gave me and let out a hum.

─ Could you please tutor me?

When I had heard that from her all of a sudden, my mind had blanked. I had never expected an inquiry about tutoring from a peer and to receive silver pieces on top of that.

It wasn’t a bad deal. Rather than going to work in the marketplace, it was better to utilize my specialty to tutor someone.

I remember hearing this from somewhere. They purchased a Golden-Eyed slave as a plaything at first, but then used them as a tutor to send their children to the Academy. According to the fables, the Golden-Eyed were not only intelligent but they were competent teachers as well.

I needed Lotte’s help to research Ultimate Fire Magic anyway. I could just think of this as the step prior to that.

[A new research goal is being set. Forming general theory.]

[□ General Theory : Bethe–Feynman Formula]

[A formula that calculates the efficiency of a nuclear weapon. Each coefficient of the formula falls under military secrecy.]

Now that the foundation was laid, it was time to introduce the actual theory.

I vaguely knew about the theory of the formula from reading papers that could be found on the internet. The formula itself was something viewable by the public. It was only that some coefficients within the formula were unknown as they were military secrets.

It didn’t matter since those coefficient values would be measured differently in this world. The important thing was which test to use in measuring the coefficients. I searched through the hardcover for any related magic.

The result was rather simple.

[It is recommended that following magic be learned in order to determine the coefficients of the formula.]

[(Incomplete)Ultimate Fire Magic ─ Flare]

“Ah.”

It was right under my nose.

My biorhythm got ruined because I stayed up late. Combined with the exhaustion that had been accumulating, my body reached its limit. In a display of guts, I slept at the front of the class during the morning meeting.

I was originally planning to sneak in a nap at the very back, but Lotte was insistent about sitting at the front so I had no choice but to follow.

[Someone like this.... is second place...?]

Yet something happened that drove all the sleep away. As I was nodding off, a heap of gold was slammed down in front of me.

... What the hell?

“You haven’t been free for that long, no? I know that you’re struggling due to a shortage of funds.”

It hasn’t even been that long since the morning meeting finished and Klion was picking a fight.

“... And?”

“I’ll give you all this so drop out of the school and come to the palace.”

Before me was thousands of gold. It definitely wasn’t a sum to be bringing to school. Lotte and the other students around us all gazed at the sack of gold on my desk.

As for me, it wasn’t really registering so I narrowed my eyes.

“No, I don’t need it.”

“You don’t... need it?”

With my current expenses, I wouldn’t ever be able to spend all this money even if I stayed here for the rest of my life. Even in the other world, I’d invest any extra money I got into research funds.

Of course, I might need more than this in order to complete the magic I was presently developing. But that was a matter already resolved by entering Tilette. As a member of the academia, it wouldn’t be difficult to borrow some of the expensive testing equipment for use.

“I have no intentions of dropping out of the Academy or accepting this money.”

My life’s motto was to give and take. I didn’t like just giving or taking. There might be those who questioned that, saying it’d be fine to just accept whatever someone gives you. But there were many people in the history of life who shared my view, so with that kind of attitude, it’d be easy to be pegged as ‘an ungrateful bastard’ and get replaced in society.

My words aggravated the Prince. Clearly peeved, Klion pushed even more gold towards me. It was twice the initial amount.

“Even if I give you this much?”

“I don’t want it.”

“Think about it carefully. You’ll have to withdraw after a semester anyway.”

“Wait, what are you talking about?”

Lotte stood abruptly from her seat.

“Why would Aether withdraw? There’s no question about her abilities, no?”

“You should already know, Saliere. The Golden-Eyed have no inherent magic ability. She’ll receive a failing grade in the practicals and soon be expelled. I can see it happen; like this, she’ll be kicked out of the school within the semester.”

This stupid fucker. Does he think that I’m not prepared for that?

This guy kept raising my blood pressure the more I saw him. It was to the point that I wanted to murder him for a brief moment.

“Why don’t you stop there?”

A burly hand dropped onto Klion’s shoulder with a Tap. His face awash with displeasure, Klion turned around to look but then saw an alpha male-like elf student who was a head taller than him.

It was Vermel Horde. When our eyes met briefly, Vermel lightly flinched but then regained his composure and struck out against Prince Klion.

“And what are you?”

“It’s rather unsightly to tell your peer to withdraw. What are you wanting to accomplish by picking on someone way above your rank?”

“Ha, do you know who I am to be treating me so recklessly?”

“It’s exactly because I know who you are. I’m the only one here who could talk to you with my head held high.”

“You, you bastard....”

Removing the sack of gold from my desk, Vermel warned Klion once more.

“Don’t be so arrogant just because you’re at the head of the nation. Hundreds of High Elves lost their heads due to their own foolishness like the way you are now.”

[Wow, this guy is like a designated bully.]

Klion pretty much had no effective ammunition against Vermel because he was an all-rounder who excelled at both the written and practical. This idiot of a Prince should know, too, that he was no match for him.

And he couldn’t use his authority to take him down a notch, either. The most that could be done was banishment from the country but with Vermel’s skills, he could transfer to Iliad Academy any time so it wouldn’t even affect his education.

The morning incident came to an end for now. As the first period started soon afterwards, Lotte and I waited with our books open.

Today’s first period was The Basics of Fire Magic.

Fuck. Was it finally that time, then?

**

Professor Hasfeldt made a complex face after making eye contact with me and picked up the chalk.

“As your homeroom teacher, I’d like to spend this first class informing you of the schedule before we make any progress. Will that be alright?”

There were sounds of appreciation from around the class. I personally wasn’t too happy about it. I could’ve gone to bed relaxed if we had moved forward with lessons instead.

“Then I’ll explain the additional guidelines that weren’t made known during the morning meeting.”

Hasfeldt looked my way once more but soon turned her eyes away.

“First, we’ll need to pick a temporary class rep.”

There it was. The teacher’s personal servant.

Everyone else must have known that fact as well because no one was readily volunteering.

“I’d like to volunteer.”

Except for the kid next to me.

“If there are no objections, then Miss Saliere will be our temporary class rep. I’ll be asking you to help me with a few things for a week minimum.”

“Yes, ma’am!”

No, fuck....

It was obvious with Professor Hasfeldt’s personality that Lotte would be worked like a dog. Even worse, a class rep was an honorary role. It was unpaid work so her labor wouldn’t be rewarded.

If it were me, I’d rather do volunteer work than be a class rep. At least with that you’d be thanked by the ones being serviced which made it worth it, but not this. Hasfeldt wasn’t someone who knew how to say thanks.

How did I know this? Yeah, I wished I didn’t.

“Besides the class rep, I need someone else to help me during the semester.”

Now what.

It should be sufficient with Lotte alone, so why was she wanting another temporary slave?

“The Basics of Fire Magic consists of many practical lessons. And there’s homework as well, of course. I will need one more student to help me during these times. Would anyone like to volunteer?”

Hasfeldt then lowered her head. Her eyes were explicitly pointing at me.

“If you’d like to volunteer, please raise your hand.”

What, fucking what.
