THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 73: Fooling Around Behind My Back
Her frail looking hands reached out to touch Shawn’s strong arms and a slight tremor coursed through his entire body.
"Nana," he called, his voice choked with emotion.
"Son," she answered weakly.
The voice was coarse and dry but it was still music to Shawn’s ears. Afterall he hasn’t heard that voice for a long time now.
The nurse who had been wriggling her fingers reluctantly stepped forward. Her words were almost a whisper as she spoke.
"I’m sorry to say this sir, but... the doctor said we should not allow her to stress herself too much for now as she is still very weak."
Shawn nodded in understanding. "I was too excited just now."
His grandmother’s recovery was too good to be true and all this was possible because of Dr Janice, no, Kathleen, he corrected.
Thinking about that person, he suddenly felt bitter again but when he remembered that she was the reason for his Nana’s recovery, he wasn’t as agitated as before and soon returned to his relaxed mood.
"You may leave now. I want to spend some time with her."
Although she would have loved to spend eternity with her "Prince charming" Shawn’s deep voice left no room for arguments.
"Alright Sir. I will be outside in case you need anything," the nurse smiled brightly and left after a lingering look at Shawn.
Dr Steffan shook his head at the nurse and approached the bed to assess Old Mrs Hudson’s condition.
From her breathing he could tell that she has greatly improved. This in itself was another surprise.
Among the many symptoms associated with castleman disease, respiratory complications was one of the symptoms they had to battle with, but now her breathing was smooth and not labored like before.
’What did she give her to cause such a quick result? I wonder what the composition of the drug is that made it so potent.’ His need to meet Dr Janice increased inexplicably.
Seeing Steffan’s expression, Shawn was startled.
"Is there anything wrong? What did you find out?"
Steffan realized his attitude just now has misled Shawn so he quickly clarified the misunderstanding.
"Everything is fine. In fact she is recovering way beyond my expectations."
Shawn was still not convinced. "But your face just now..."
Steffan didn’t allow him to finish before interrupting. "I was only wondering what Dr Janice did to achieve such a fast result."
Shawn’s hanging heart finally settled down and he breathed a sigh of relief.
He sat there together with Stefan for some time all the while holding onto his grandmother’s hand.
They accompanied her in silence for close to an hour, which was the longest he had stayed with her since he’s been checking in on her.
His phone, which had been on silent since he entered, flashed a light.
His brows drew together after reading the message that was displayed on the screen. He bent down, kissed his Nana on the forehead then got up to leave.
As he passed through the living room, he instructed the nurses to take good care of his grandmother.
When they got to his wing of the manor, he noticed Steffan was unusually quiet and hadn’t bothered him.
"What’s the matter with you? You’ve been acting strange since you came here."
"Why did I miss out on such a golden opportunity?" Steffan lamented as if he’s been waiting for the cue from Shawn to vent.
He was envious of the nurses and nutritionist who had seen her and Dr Sullivan who was also present.
"I’m sure Dr Sullivan observed the whole process. Maybe, he can tell me a thing or two if I ask him," he uttered as a last resort.
Shawn was taken aback and looked on pitifully at his friend who had been of tremendous help to him over the years. He had also stood by him all through his most trying moments.
"Don’t worry, I’ll put in a word for you and arrange for you to meet her."
Steffan’s eyes widened in disbelief. "Really! You will do that for me?"
A ray of hope appeared in his eyes. "I love you brother."
He grabbed Shawns hands in his, pulled it towards him, but Shawn quickly withdrew his hand before it could touch Steffan’s lips.
Shawn’s nose scrunched up as if Steffan had contracted a deadly disease. "Ugh. Disgusting."
"I’m serious, my love is true." Steffan teased, returning to his jovial self.
There was a great contrast to the Steffan that entered this room and the one he was currently facing. Thank goodness he is ok, thought Shawn.
"But I don’t love you dude," he declared without mincing words, however his eyes exposed his lie.
"It doesn’t matter. I know you won’t admit it anyway."
Shawn was in a good mood and could also afford to joke. He chuckled and said. "That’s because I’m straight."
"Yeah, straighter than a stripping pole I must say."
"Hey... don’t tell me you have been fooling around behind my back. Remember you are a custodian of a noble profession, and can’t be found in such places."
"Even doctors need to let out some steam occasionally." Steffan replied with a smile.
"No wonder, my hand recoiled just now. Are you still clean, my friend?
"Do you want to confirm?" Steffan stepped closer, mischief dancing in his eyes.
Shawn grimaced. "Sorry to disappoint you. I’m not into men. Try somewhere else."
They both roared with laughter.
Changing the topic, Steffan asked, "On a serious note, when do I get to meet with Dr Janice?"
Shawn’s brow quirked up. "Why didn’t I know before that one of the virtues you possess is impatience?"
"Is that even considered a virtue? But you can’t blame me, though. This is a lifetime opportunity that I dare not miss. If not, I will never forgive myself."
"Hey, trust me. You’ll meet her, not just now but even for as long as you want."
"I wonder what you mean by that, but once will do for now," Steffan said. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
He looked at Shawn skeptically. "Wait, were you joking just now?
