THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 74: I’ve Set Up A Plan To Woo Her.
"About what?" Shawn was lost and didn’t understand what Steffan thought he was joking about.
"You, arranging for me to meet with Dr Janice."
"Of course I wasn’t joking." Shawn frowned and asked in a cold voice
"Why do you think I would joke with something like that? Have I ever failed in doing what I promised?"
Steffan twisted his mouth, turned his eyes heavenward and gave a few taps to the side of his head as if he was actually thinking about it. "I can’t seem to remember."
Shawn sighed helplessly and shook his head. "That’s because there is no record of that. He strolled towards the coffee machine and poured a cup of coffee.
Steffan waited for Shawn to hand over the cup of coffee to him, but to his amazement, Shawn brought the coffee to his mouth and took a sip without batting an eye. He even pretended not to see his outstretched arms.
"Wicked soul." Steffan had no choice but to help himself to a cup of coffee. "I wonder why I am still friends with a tyrant like you."
Shawn chuckled, "It is obviously because you love me. You said so yourself."
"Arrogant bastard. If not for the fact that I have witnessed firsthand how the separation from your wife and grandmother’s sickness has affected you, I would have called you heartless."
"Thanks for your kind consideration. I will take that as a reward for my many years of unbroken friendship."
Steffan was speechless. How can he turn every word around to advance his arguments? Anyways, I can never win with him.
Shawn gloated at the speechless Steffan. "Can you quit being so petty and tell me why you doubted me?"
Steffan sighed in defeat. "You said I could meet Dr Janice whenever I want, that’s a little far-fetched, don’t you think?"
"If I say so, it means I can do it." Shawn asserted, leaned back into his chair and crossed his legs over each other. "Are you still doubting my abilities?" No worries, I will make sure he eats his words soonest.
Steffan sneered and lifted his shoulders in a shrug, "Ok, I’ll wait and see. But for now, I need to get back to the hospital so that I can prepare for the surgeries scheduled for later this evening."
Shawn glanced at his wrist watch. "Wow, time has really passed. That makes the two of us. I also need to catch up with an appointment, but in the meantime, I will still give you the honor of riding with me."
He finished the rest of his coffee before standing up. "I will drop you off at the hospital before going for my appointment, then arrange for someone to send your car to the hospital."
"Doing me an honor indeed." Steffan sneered and also stood up from his seat. He adjusted his suit. "Who dragged me out in the first place?"
"Do I need to remind you that you came on your own accord?" Shawn’s sarcastic reply rang out from the adjourning toilet door which he left half open.
After relieving himself, he inspected his appearance in the mirror, ran a comb through his medium length hair and made little adjustments to his tie. He picked up his phone and left the room, closing the door behind him.
"But it turned out that my presence was very useful," Steffan replied. "Talking of which, how are you going to handle the issue with your wife?"
Shawn’s expression that was playful suddenly turned clouded. His long strides slowed down as he battled with the surging emotions that threatened to overwhelm him.
They walked on in silence until they got to the front of the main house where Shawn’s car was parked. They stood beside the car without entering inside.
Steffan felt uncomfortable and started regretting steering the conversation in that direction. Just when he was about to say something else to liven the atmosphere, he heard Shawn’s voice.
"I’ve set up a plan to woo her, but this time I’m going to use another strategy."
Even though he was able to speak calmly this time, the hurt was still evident in his voice.
Steffan was not only surprised that Shawn eventually responded but the contents of his words left him thinking.
He scrutinized his face and saw that he was being serious. Actually, he had brought up the discussion to test the level of stability of Shawn’s emotions.
Seeing Shawn was willing to talk about it, he was encouraged to delve more into the gist. "And what might that strategy be?"
"I will tell you after I achieve the desired result." Shawn said, drawing a line over the conversation.
Steffan patted Shawn’s arms that were crossed over each other on his chest. "I guess I have to wish you the best of luck then."
The corners of Shawn’s mouth spasmed up.
"Thanks man. I’ll need a truckload of that in this mission."
Steffan gave a wry smile in response. At some point he, as a friend, had started developing a subtle hatred for the woman who made his friend’s life this miserable. Especially after witnessing the way she treated Shawn at the airport and the impact it had on Shawn.
To be sincere, what Shawn did to her was grievous but from his own judgment as a friend, Shawn has suffered enough to atone for his sins.
At this point she should be magnanimous enough to forgive him. However as the saying goes, it is he who wears the shoes that knows where it pinches the most.
But seeing that his friend was not ready to give up, he could only choose to support him.
"Can you promise me something?"
"What is it?" Shawn asked warily.
"That you will try your best not to be too agitated to avoid getting into a crisis."
"But they just happen, and I don’t seem to have any control over them when it happens." He has tried several times to fight it but somehow always ended up being subdued under the force of that feeling.
