THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 66: They Deserve To Know The Truth
"You are still in love with their father and you’re afraid they will..."
"No, I’m not." Kathleen interrupted abruptly before her father could finish what he had to say.
"I stopped loving him the day he gave up on our marriage." Kathleen lowered her head to hide the emotions in her eyes.
The corners of Director Wyatt’s mouth curled up slightly.
"But you have been rejecting so many suitors that have come to ask for your hand in marriage and that can only mean you have not been able to move on emotionally."
"Rejecting those suitors had nothing to do with whether I have moved on from loving him or not."
She pouted and clarified. "I needed to concentrate on strengthening myself and had no time for less important things."
"Is that so?" A chuckle escaped from Director Robin’s mouth.
"Why then are you paying so much attention to his grandmother as soon as you got to Baltimore? You even arranged for her to be treated at the Hudson residence."
Kathleen’s head shot up, her mouth wide open. "How did you know about that?"
"Let’s say I have my eyes everywhere my dear."
He tilted his chin up and straightened his suit jacket. "Don’t forget, I am Director Robin Wyatt. Nothing happens without my notice, except I am not interested."
"Dad?"
"Don’t blame me dear. You are back here in a place where you were hurt, as my darling daughter I’ll definitely be interested in everything happening around you."
Kathleen was rendered speechless.
"Although you chose not to tell me, I also know there was an assassination attempt on your life just last week and I’m still waiting to see how you’ll handle that."
Kathleen gaped in shock. It was like her father was bent on pushing her into a panic attack today.
After recovering from her shock, something clicked in her brain. "Have you been monitoring me dad?"
"Nah," He waved his hands casually. "I’ve been watching out for you, my dear. There is a difference," clarified her father.
"They are the same thing dad, as long as I was not informed." She felt warm inside though. "But I’m happy to have you watch over me."
"About old Mrs Hudson..." she looked up, her eyes holding a defensive glint. "They approached me as Doctor Janice, and I’m only treating her as a doctor and nothing more."
"Besides, she was the only one that took care of me in the Hudson’s household. I couldn’t just watch her die. It’s only fair I help out now that she’s in need and I’m in a position to offer that help."
Director Robin took note of the passionate way she defended herself and his eyes clouded with affection.
"Come here." He opened his arms and as Kathleen stepped forward she was circled in a warm hug.
"You don’t need to be so uptight, dear. And you should not refrain from doing good as long as it is within your power," he soothed in a deep voice.
"Besides, as a doctor, it is against your ethics to discriminate against anyone. So I’m not judging you for treating Old Mrs Hudson."
"Thanks dad." Her father’s embrace offered her great solace and strength. "I love you dad."
"I love you too, sweetheart."
She stayed locked in her father’s embrace for a few more seconds before he gently separated from her.
"Now you have to hurry back to the children before they’ll think I have abducted their mother."
A warm smile spread over Kathleen’s face.
"Yes dad. Do have a safe trip and remember to call me as soon as you reach, so I can talk to the surgeon there."
"I will. Think about what I said and act fast. The children deserve to know the truth."
"I’ll try my best, dad."
"But how?" Kathleen muttered to herself. Her eyes scanned the room and rested on the wall clock, it was past eleven in the night and she has not been able to have a good rest.
"Maybe a shower will help clear my muddy head." She got up, took her bathrobe from the wardrobe and entered the bathroom.
*********
The following morning she opened her eyes and two pairs of large bright blue orbs staring down at her, was the first thing that came into view.
She robbed her eyes and they were still there staring at her when she opened her eyes again. She smiled and pulled them in for a hug.
"You little munchkins, what are you doing in my room so early in the morning?"
The two children exchanged looks but didn’t say anything. ’It seems mummy is no longer sad. That’s good.’
They’ve been worried all night and came here early in the morning to apologize to her, but met her sleeping peacefully.
"Did you have a good night’s rest?" asked a more rational Elvis.
Kathleen’s heart warmed up at their concern.
"I sure did and you?"
"We slept well," Elvis answered before Eleanor would go ahead to spew nonsense.
Kathleen’s eyes took in the children’s dresses. "You are already dressed for school, what time is it?"
"It’s past seven, Mummy."
"What! Why didn’t anybody wake me?"
Elvis raised his hand to scratch his head. They both looked guilty and didn’t say anything.
They knew they were almost running late for school but didn’t allow Mrs Carr to wake her up either.
Finally the sweet mouthed Eleanor spoke up. "You were sleeping so beautifully that we didn’t have the heart to wake you."
In order for their mother not to blame Mrs Carr, Elvis added, "We even stopped Mrs Carr from waking you up when she came to your room some minutes ago."
They kept quiet and were waiting for the scolding to come, but unexpectedly, their mother held them tighter to herself.
"Awwn... don’t I love you both?" She gave them a peck each on their cheeks.
"Now hurry up and go downstairs for breakfast while I get ready."
"We’ve eaten mummy."
"Oh. If you’ll please excuse mummy, I have to freshen up as fast as possible."
