Chapter 63: Reminding Him Of The Contract Terms.

Shikera chuckled slightly in spite of herself.

"Did you expect us to address each other as Mister and Missus until you come back?" She didn’t sense the anxiety in her father’s voice when he answered her.

"Doesn’t he hate reporters anymore? I know he’s upright and would not exhibit any form of closeness to you as long as he dislikes you."

"He still dislikes them, I wouldn’t say hate. But, he’s nice to me." She heard a relieved sigh come from the other end of the line, before her father’s stressed voice followed.

"Then, that’s nice. But Princess...you know you shouldn’t like him, right? You know it’s not going to end up in a good way for anyone..."

There was a long, pregnant silence before Shikera sighed, and with a determined gaze in her eyes, answered, "I know, Dad. You don’t have to worry about me."

She hung up on the call and handed the phone back to Ethan, whose eyes furrowed at her gloomy expression when she dropped the call.

"What’s wrong?" he asked, expecting a normal reply but...

"Can you let me be for a while?"

She waited with that blank face which had a hint of sadness, until Ethan walked out of the room, before closing the door after him.

Scarlet City.

Liam Anderson signaled to his assistant who was standing beside him, and when the man bent towards him, he whispered into his ears, "Send a PDF copy of the marriage contract to Chris DeLoach, and add a message."

The assistant stayed still, waiting to hear the message and Liam continued,"It would be beneficial to both of us, if your son abides by the main clause of the contract he signed."

"What happened to her?" Ethan slammed the car door after himself, a deep frown on his face.

"You will know when you arrive," was the answer given to him.

With curiosity eating his nerves, Ethan drove straight to DeLoach mansion at top speed, without even knowing the reason why.

Few minutes after he was treated strangely by Shikera, Ethan had received a vague call from his father with the older man telling him his mother needed him. Why would she need him when she wasn’t about to take her last breath or something?

Nevertheless, Ethan was not about to let another woman in his family, be harmed as a result of his own nonchalance or feelings.

He arrived at the mansion in an hour and sprinted along the cobblestone pathway leading from the parking lot to the main building, while looking around to make sure none of the workers were around.

Even though he had used his facemask, his fear of the camera was that much, that he wanted to make sure there was no foolish or rebellious worker nearby.

Still observing the surroundings, he was surprised when his eyes caught his mother and Esther, squatting behind a bed of flowers in the garden. They looked absolutely alright and normal so why had his father called him in such an abrupt manner? Only Chris could answer that question so Ethan proceeded to meet him when Esther’s excited voice shrieked,

"Daddy!"

Before Ethan could turn and wave to her, she ran into him and put her small arms around him.

"Why did you come?" His mother’s voice reached his ears and he looked up to see her approaching, at a much slower pace to Esther’s.

"Is everything alright in here?" he asked.

Raine nodded with a confused look and asked, "Why? Did something happen at your place?"

He shook his head in answer before excusing himself,"Don’t bother about it. You can continue with what you were doing, I’ll go see Dad."

Standing at the front of the door of his father’s study room, Ethan didn’t bother knocking before easing himself into the room.

"Why did you lie?" He asked straight, without dilly-dallying. The man seated behind the large desk looked up when he heard the sudden question in his supposedly empty study room. Seeing that it was his son, Chris walked around the table to stand before him.

"Because you wouldn’t come otherwise."

"Why do you need me to be here?" Ethan asked again.

Chris ignored him and instead went on to ask his own question. "How is it with Shikera?"

Frowning, as he could sense that the reason Chris called him was related to Shikera, Ethan answered, "Everything’s fine."

"And it’s not supposed to be so. What happened?"

"She helped me lift some of my burdens, let’s leave it at that. Why do you keep asking this strange questions?"

"Nothing, I simply wanted to remind you not to ’touch her’. You are smart enough to know what that means, right?"

"And what if I do want to touch her notwithstanding, how would that affect you?"

Chris’ face, which was previously relaxed, suddenly tensed up when he heard Ethan’s words. He frowned.

"You know you can’t, Ethan. It was a contract marriage and you are very well aware that Liam doesn’t want his daughter to get married. He wants her to be as free as possible so if you know you are sexually attracted to her, then you can wait for a year, right?"

Ethan was silent, and the older man continued as he saw his words were having a little effect. "You’re obey the rules of the business world, Ethan, so I expect you’ll abide by the rules of the contract. Just until Liam comes back...then, you should be able to marry his daughter in the right way."

Shikera’s hand hovered in the air, as she restrained herself from knocking on the door for the fifth time. Earlier, she had knocked on Ethan’s room door and as she did not receive a reply, she concluded he was in his study. But here she was, and no one had answered her still. Was he perhaps ignoring her because of her unsavory behavior earlier? She was about to call out his name when she heard a voice call out for Enoch.

"Uncle Enoch!" That was Esther’s voice.

Realization dawning on her, Shikera found her self skipping down the stairs. She only stopped dead in her tracks when she sighted Esther, with Ethan behind her.

"Hi, Esther!"

"Hi!" The little girl’s greeting was extraordinarily enthusiastic today, which surprised Shikera.

However, since she also has a bubbly personality, she ignored it and walked towards Esther while ignoring Ethan completely. One would think she wasn’t the one knocking on his door just a few minutes ago.

"How have you been? It’s been a while," she said, looking straight into Esther’s scrutinizing eyes.

"I have been fine," the girl replied, before suddenly turning to her father.

"Can I see Miss Anderson for a minute?

There’s something I want to ask her."

The two adults in the room were surprised, and they did well to share their questioning stares.

"Of course," Ethan agreed.
