Chapter 240: Investigate Lunch

"Wake up, Kera! Kera...Kera! Jeez, this girl..."

Mignon pulled Shikera up by her shoulders, heaving as she did so. She pulled her up to a sitting position before leaning in to scream in her ears,

"Wake up, Kera!"

Instantly, Shikera’s eyes fluttered open as she jolted with a start.

"What’s wrong?!"

Seeing that she had successfully woken Shikera up, Mignon breathed a sigh of relief and took her hands of the former’s shoulders.

"Don’t you think you sleep too deeply these days?" she asked.

"What deeply? How many days have you found me sleeping for you to take that conclusion?" Shikera asked back, defending herself. She got out of bed and yawned, stretching her arms before sitting back on the bed.

"I can never win an argument against you so I’ll just drop it," Mignon replied. She paused for a while before adding, "I came to tell you Grandma Cooper is bathing already. I guess we can’t stop her."

"I guess so..." Shikera agreed, "I still don’t know why she’s treating me well."

"I don’t know why she treats me well either. She’s nice, and I can’t say how thankful I am that she found me when I was wound—"

Bang!

At the sudden loud sound that they heard, Shikera and Mignon exchanged quick glances before rushing out of the room. They traced the source of the sound to Grandma Cooper’s room, only to see her lying on her back on the ground.

"Grandma!" The two ladies chorused, as they rushed towards Grandma Cooper.

She was dressed up already, and Shikera noticed it was the same clothes she was wearing that day she found her. Clothes that would easily blend in with that of those in the city and would not draw attention to her.

"What happened, Grandma?" Shikera questioned. Along with Mignon, they helped the woman up as slowly as they could while watching her grimace in pain. It seemed like she really fell hard.

"I...was trying to take something from that shelf but the other items there came crashing down on me. Help me up," Grandma Cooper said.

They helped her up and assisted her in walking until she got to the bed, where they helped her to rest on the bed.

"I’m not resting. I have to leave for the city as early as possible so I can get your medical report." She groaned as she tried to resist them from pushing her down on the bed.

"No, Grandma," Shikera stated, her face pulling up into a frown, "We can get the medical report another day."

"Stop saying that. Dr. Langston says if that happens another day, you will take longer to recover from the pain and your baby is also in danger for every second you are not treated. Today is the only day we have to get the report. No one knows what will happen tomorrow," Grandma Cooper refused. When she explained like that, Shikera had to take her hands off even though she was guilty. Mignon did the same to allow Grandma Cooper sit up, but the woman only fell back to the bed with a loud groan of pain.

"I think my back is broken," she hissed in pain, gritting her teeth.

"What? Let me go get the doctor," Shikera exclaimed. She got off the bed but was pulled back by Grandma Cooper.

"Where are you going? The doctor will only ask me to stay in bed for today or worse, for the whole week. We can’t let that happen."

Shikera sighed, "What do you mean we can’t let that happen? You want to go to the city in this condition that you are?" Her voice was impatient as she felt guilty that someone was trying to ignore her own pain all because of her, when they were not even family. She could remember herself doing the same until two weeks ago, and she suddenly felt annoyed. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

"You can’t. I won’t let you go—"

"What are you saying, Kera? There’s no one else to go but me."

Shikera shook her head.

"Yes, there is. I can go, by myself. They were once my family so I know very well how to avoid them. You don’t have to worry about me to the detriment of your own health!" Shikera insisted.

"You can’t go there," Grandma Cooper said, her grip tightening around Shikera’s wrist.

"I can, Grandma. And I will!"

A determined gaze in her eyes, Shikera stormed out of the room and walked to her own room.

The scene looked like a familiar one to Grandma Cooper, as she remembered this same thing happening 26 years ago. The same words, ’i can, mother, and I will’.

She hurriedly turned to look at Mignon, a frown on her face.

"Follow your sister, Leah. Make sure she comes back, okay? No matter what happens, make sure she comes back with you!" she ordered, nudging Mignon away from her.

"Uh? Who will take care of you then?" Mignon asked, even though she was already getting ready to follow Shikera.

"Dr Langston will; I’ll call him. You two should go with Alan."

"Alan?! How do I ask him to follow us on an impromptu visit to the city with such short notice?" Mignon asked in disbelief. Was she and Shikera kids that needed guidance from Alan?

Grandma Cooper head moved slowly from one side to another. "No, Leah. I already told him before this. He was planning to follow me."

"Alright, Grandma! Take care of yourself and trust me, I’ll surely bring Kera back," Mignon promised. She pushed a strand of Grandma Cooper’s hair back and gave her a peck on her forehead, as she rushed out of the room to join Shikera.

The whole house filed into the car, all of them except for Raymond, in a merry mood. He chose to drive so as to exempt himself from the ongoing discussion, and to get a chance to drown himself in his own thoughts.

"What restaurant did you chose?" he asked, getting into the driver’s seat.

Enoch, who was now sitting in the front passenger’s seat, replied him. The rest of them, Ruthlyn, Esther, and Hazel, got into the back seat and settled themselves comfortably.

"How about Cyprian? Is she coming?" Ruthlyn asked, casting a glance at Raymond’s face through the rearview mirror.

"Call her and ask that if you want to know," Raymond replied coldly from the front.

"Tsk tsk, I won’t stress myself anymore." With a blank expression, she retrieved her phone and dialled Cyprian’s number.

"I’m calling, and don’t you dare ask to speak to her," she eyed Raymond as she spoke, while waiting for the call to connect.

"Hi Ruthlyn," Cyprian’s voice was broken.

"Is that you, Cyprian?"

"Yeah, you called my number."

Ruthlyn replied, "Yeah, that’s true. I wanted to ask if you’ll be coming with us to the restaurant today. I texted the plan to you yesterday, right?"

"Uhm...I don’t think I’m needed there. It will only arouse suspicions, don’t you think? How can I be there when my best friend is not?" Cyprian replied.

Ruthlyn saw reasons with her reply and sighed, "Alright then. But if you decide to visit, you see still welcome."

"Or course, I know that. Bye, Ruth."

"Take care, Cyprian," Ruthlyn replied.

Beep!

She leaned forward and tapped Raymond.

"I guess you really hurt her for her to be like this. Talk to her soon, Ray."

"It’s none of your business," Raymond gave the usual reply he had been giving since Ruthlyn started poking her nose in his relationship matters.

"Hold on..." he thought out loud, a smile suddenly breaking out on his face. "I do have a relationship advisor after all. Why was I suffering all this while??"

A second was all it took for him to realize he had spoken his thoughts out loud. He turned to confront the three suspicions filled pair of eyes staring at him from his back.

"Continue with your discussion. What I just said...is none of your business," he deadpanned.

No one spoke in the car afterwards and Raymond continued to feel those eyes on his body until they got to their destination, a restaurant where they had registered a private room.

As soon as they alighted from the car, Enoch rushed over to Ruthlyn.

"Let’s take this as a date. I chose a room with a floor- to -ceiling window so we can enjoy the view too," he informed her.

"Gosh, I guess you really did make the best of the this opportunity. Turning an investigative lunch into a lunch date, isn’t it your forte?" Ruthlyn smiled.

While the two continued with their banter, Raymond was on the call with Team leader Zuresh, giving her directions on how to get to the restaurant they were in. Hazel was admiring the restaurant’s exterior which had Christmas decorations hung on it, while Esther was gazing in the distance.

She wondered why the figures approaching in the distance resembled her mummies. The both of them.
