Chapter 202: Gunshots.

Shikera eyes stayed fix on the children, after throwing their mothers into a web of confusion by misleading them into thinking that her husband was a chef. Well, she was not lying since Ethan really cooked for both her and Esther. He was their personal chef.

When the waiter approached, Shikera excused herself from the table knowing that she could not eat anything from their menu anyways. So she pretended to join the children at their table and probably check out what Esther was doing.

She rose from the chair and after mumbling excuses, she walked towards Esther’s table when a loud bang sounded behind her. She fell to her knees immediately, her heart beating erratically in her chest. What was that?!

Screams erupted in all corners of the restaurant and that was when Shikera heard the sound of someone slumping behind her. Still on her knees, she turned slowly to see the waiter lying on the floor and pool of blood starting to form behind his head.

Her jaws slacked and she backed away as quickly as she could, breaking into a run in Esther’s direction.

"Come here, Esther!"

Everyone in the restaurant were running from one place to another, shouting for help from the waiters who were still scared shit at seeing their colleague lying on the floor without moving.

Shikera felt herself pushed sideways as the women she had been talking to just a minute ago, rushed past her to their sons. With no time to even feel the pain, she also rushed to meet Esther halfway.

"What’s happening, Mummy?" the little girl’s scared voice made Shikera more alert of their situation.

She pulled Esther into a hug and blocked her ears from the piercing screams which had now intensified, and was now accompanied by loud cries of most children and women.

"Call the police!" someone shouted.

Shikera felt her body for her phone only to realize that she left it behind at the table she shared with the women.

"Where are they?" She looked around the restaurant, spotting them at one corner near the entrance. These women really didn’t hesitate to show how fake their friendship was.

She pulled Esther’s hand and crept away from there. "Let’s leave, Esther. We have to pass—"

Another loud shot rang in the air, causing Shikera and Esther to stop dead in her tracks. She turned slowly...her eyes widened in shock, to see a hole bored in the leg of the table under which she and Esther had been hiding just now.

If Shikera had been doubting before, all of her doubts were now cleared at the sight of that glaring hole staring back at her.

She was the target!

The first gunshot brought a waiter, who was standing in where she was supposed to be, down instead of her while the second one hit a table beside which she had been standing just now.

As if to interrupt Shikera’s thoughts, countless rings of gunshots sounded in the air, sending everyone in the restaurant scurrying to every hidden corner they could find.

"Mummy! Let’s move..."

"Calm down, Esther. Just move over to Jade’s mom okay? Let me find—"

"Heads down everybody! Heads down!"

A group of men in black who were armed with guns rushed into the restaurant, while some others circled the restaurant from outside. Emergency sirens resounded all around the area, and some paramedics rushed inside to carry out the waiter who was shot along with those who were injured one way or the other during the commotion.

Shikera obeyed the instruction and pulled Esther down with her, just like the others in the room.

She placed her hands on Esther’s ears while enduring the simultaneous gunshots that echoed afterwards.

The ruckus finally died down after ten minutes and everyone attempted to rush out of the restaurant but were denied from leaving.

"The criminals might have been caught, but everyone here still have to be questioned by the police," one of the black clothed man said.

"Aren’t you guys the police? Come question us," a voice rose from the crowd.

"We? We are not policemen. We are just... gun men," he answered.

Shikera pulled Esther to her feet and helped her sit on a chair, prepared to stay for as long as the police required, when the man in black who had just talked approached her.

"Miss Anderson? You should come with us," he whispered.

Shikera was startled.

"Me? You guys are..." she trailed off, remembering the face of this particular man back from the night of the BOTOT award ceremony. He was guarding Ethan then!

"Did Ethan send you?" Shikera whispered.

"You can say so."

"Oh...uhm, I don’t think I can go with you now. I should wait for the police to arrive."

The man sighed, biting his lips as if he was hesitant to say something.

"What’s the problem?" Shikera pressed, her tone changing into an authoritative one. This man should at least respect her as Ethan’s wife, right?

"The thing is, ma’am, everyone here will only be in more danger if you stay here. You...were the actual target of this whole—"

"What?! I am the..." With her own hands, Shikera shut herself up before she could say something she would regret.

"Let’s leave then," she murmured.

The man bowed and gestured as if to usher her forward while the remaining men in black in the restaurant created a pathway for her and Esther. She picked up her phone and bag on her way outside and out of the corner of her eyes, could see the women staring at her with shock evident in her eyes.

Shikera caressed Esther’s head as gently as she could, trying not to wake her up from her sleep. It was obvious that the girl’s sleep was induced by the shock of what she had experienced earlier, so Shikera had directed requested that the man who was driving them, take them straight to the hospital.

"Which of the hospitals are we going?" Shikera asked out loud. She wanted to avoid Krystal so she was not going to Lucian Rays group of hospitals.

"That’s..."

That car suddenly screeched to a halt.
