Chapter 52: Ring

The meeting with the new investors was successful, and Dalton has secured the necessary funds to develop a small company he recently acquired. He is now planning to purchase another company that he has his eye on, but the owner is unwilling to sell. Dalton is considering resorting to blackmail or framing the owner to force a sale of the company.

"Mr. Black, I’m back," Haven said, knocking on the door. She walked in, with Aiden following behind her.

"Have you worked on the files I left on your desk?" Dalton asked.

"Yes, I did. I have forwarded them to you, so you can check to verify," she replied.

"What about the detailed file on the pharmaceutical company that I asked you to compile for me?"

"I’ve finished that as well. Check your email, and I have scheduled a meeting with the owners of the oil company you want to buy in Texas. I managed to charm them into agreeing to have lunch with you."

"Hmm," Dalton mused. "Good, good." He was impressed by how efficient and swift she was with the tasks he assigned to her. He had been skeptical about hiring her as his secretary, despite her being a genius, he had underestimated her communication skills. Haven is a social butterfly—a true charmer. And has warmed the hearts of many businesses, men, and women. After her working contract with him ends, he plans to offer her the position of Chief Financial Officer in his company, along with a substantial salary, to ensure she continues working for him indefinitely. She is an asset he cannot afford to lose.

Dalton handed Haven a stack of files. "Please conduct a financial audit for me," he instructed. Although he has a competent financial audit team that he typically relies on to assess the state of his company finances, he prefers to use Haven because of her exceptional analytical skills. She has a remarkable ability to identify undetectable errors or loopholes.

Haven grinned. She loved tasks like this because she gets to work with numbers and figures.

"Anything else?"

"No, not for now."

Aiden suddenly cleared his throat to remind them that he was in the room with them.

"Dalton, your secretary got engaged; you should give her a day off."

Dalton glanced at Haven. "You are too young to be getting married. You’re only 19."

Haven gritted her teeth. "What is it with you, brothers? For heaven’s sake, I just turned 20 two months ago! Mr. Black, you even gave me a birthday present."

"I did?" Dalton asked, not remembering. "Well then, congratulations. You can do the financial audit next week. I’m giving you the rest of this week off to celebrate."

"Nope," Haven strongly declined. "I can celebrate while working. I will go do the auditing. Call me if you need me." Haven quickly dashed off.

"What an excited bride-to-be she is," Aiden said sarcastically. Dalton didn’t respond; he wasn’t interested in his secretary’s personal life unless it involved Maya, as they had become friends.

"What do you have for me?" Dalton asked, getting straight to the point.

Aiden placed a file on the desk. "This is the original and authentic will that Maya’s late mother left behind."

Dalton opened the manila file and read the will. "She left nothing for Frederick Hathaway and bequeathed everything she owned to her children, including Maya." He couldn’t wait to inform Maya about this; she would be thrilled.

"Yes, Frederick Hathaway had Maya’s mother’s lawyer forge a fake will. I pressured the lawyer into giving me the original will," Aiden explained.

"How did you locate him?" Dalton asked. The lawyer had been out of the country for two decades.

"Well, I’m the best tracker," Aiden replied with a grin. "I found him in a small town in Belgium."

"Well done. I want you to do something else for me," Dalton said.

"Sure, shoot."

"I want you to investigate Maya’s mother’s life before she gave birth to Maya. 23 years ago, including the people she interacted with and the men Fredrick was involved with during that time. I want to find Maya’s father."

"Maya’s father? You told me to back off when I suggested we should uncover his identity," Aiden looked perplexed.

"I have changed my mind. I want you to find him immediately."

"Okay, I’ll start working on that. The only thing I know is that he is Italian."

"Then look for an Italian man who had relations with Frederick Hathaway and Maya’s mother 23 years ago."

"Alright, I need to sell some of my sports cars to new clients. I’m off to one of my showrooms," Aiden made his exit.

Dalton returned to work, reviewing the audited financial statements from the companies he had just purchased.

When the clock struck 4 PM, Dalton left his office.

"Haven, grab your bag; we’re going out," Dalton said to Haven, who was buried in her auditing work. Haven shut her laptop, got to her feet, and draped her bag over her shoulder before following Dalton out without hesitation.

Dalton drove to the largest jewelry store in the city.

Dalton went straight to the ring section.

"Excuse me, how may I assist you?" a woman in a conservative suit approached Dalton.

Haven handed Dalton’s card to the woman.

The woman’s eyes widened. "Dalton Black." Her smile grew wider. "I’m the manager of this store. It is an honor and a privilege to have you patronize our jewelry store, Mr. Black. You will find the jewelry that suits your taste on the top floor reserved for our VVIP guests."

"Lead the way," Dalton’s tone authoritative.

The manager led them to the elevator, which took them to the top floor. The jewelry on display was more exquisite than that on the main floor. "I want a diamond ring," Dalton requested

"I will show you the best and most exclusive pieces we have, created by our top jewelry designer."

The manager clapped twice, and a young man wheeled in a portable display case filled with beautiful rings, halting it in front of Dalton before returning to the room he came from.

"I will give some privacy. Your secretary can prompt the assistant who brought in the rings when you are ready to make a purchase," the manager said before taking her leave.

Haven waited until she was out of sight before reacting. "What the hell, Mr. Black! A diamond ring? An engagement ring for Maya?"

"Yes, I want to propose to Maya," Dalton said bluntly as he looked over the rings displayed before him.

"What? You two have barely started dating! That’s insane!"

"I’m not proposing today; I’m planning to do it in a month."

Haven looked at Dalton incredulously. "That’s still crazy!"

"Why is it crazy?"

"Because it is too soon to propose. Mr. Black, have you ever been in a serious relationship before? You are acting as if you have never experienced that."

His only serious relationship was during his first year of college. Since then, he has only had a few short flings with women because he was too focused on work and didn’t care enough about women or relationships until he met Maya.

When Maya told him that she wanted him too, he knew he would marry her and spend the rest of his life with her.

"Wait a little longer before you propose to her, or you might freak her out," Haven advised.

Dalton recalls Maya’s reaction when he told her she was moving in with him. Yeah, she will totally freak out.

"Okay, I will propose to her in three months," he said. freёnovelkiss-com

"That’s still too soon. Six months to a year is more appropriate," Haven suggested.

Dalton wasn’t happy with that suggestion, but he knew Haven was right. He had no choice but to accept her suggestion. "Okay, I will wait for six months."

Haven smiled triumphantly. "Now let me help you find the perfect ring for Maya."

They peered over the rings for a long time before Haven picked up a marquise-cut diamond ring. The ring was classy, elegant, and very expensive. Haven prompted the assistant, and Dalton made the purchase.

"Don’t rant about this to Maya," Dalton warned Haven as they sat down in the car.

Haven drew her thumb and index finger over her lips. "I swear I won’t."

Dalton believed her.

Now, it was time for him to convince Maya that he was the man she needed to spend the rest of her life with.
