Chapter 101: Ingenious Confession (Ch.101)

Nile’s eyes snapped open, his breath coming out in pants as a chilling feeling gripped him, his heart racing a mile a minute and a bitter feeling was settled in the pit of his stomach.

The bloody sights, the sounds, the freezing cold, the smell of blood...it all had been so real and Nile doubled over to the side, dry heaving.

Nile felt a hand running down his back in a comforting motion, he had not even realized he was not alone but for some reason the touch from this hand warmed his heart and eased the ache, if only by just a little.

Nile shuddered, whether it was the cold or the horror from his vision, Nile was not certain but he remained leaning on his hands as he struggled to calm his breathing.

Nile felt a hand brush his forehead, pulling back the strands of hair that dangled before him so they splayed down his back.

Those hands brushed over his hair repeatedly and then alternated to making calming motions down his back and Nile found himself desperate to bask in this warmth for a time.

Nile needed it, he desperately needed it...his visions had always been realistic and out of his control, yet he had never failed to maintain his calm... he had never witnessed a sight that filled him with so much despair.

How could Nile maintain his cool when seeing Zariah in such a condition? Zariah whom he had watched grow up, whom he had watched take her first baby steps even when he himself had been a young pup.

Zariah whom he had watched dance around the pack bonfire, her playful personality always heartwarming and keeping away every darkness and heartache he had ever felt at bay.

Zariah whom he had watched in her own time of darkness, despairing at the loss of her father yet she held her head high and accepted the Creator’s will.

Zariah who never shirked her duty but willingly took on the responsibility of leading the Crimson Moon whilst knowing she would have to give up the chance to live a carefree life as every other child her age did.

Zariah the warmest, Zariah who smiled the brightest, Zariah whose eyes always twinkled mischievously when she was up to one mischief or the other,

Zariah the strongest, the most unyielding, the fiercest, the warrior amongst warriors, the Creator’s chosen, the heart of Crimson Moon and wielder of the Creator’s flame.

That was his Alpha, that was the Zariah Nile knew and loved, because she was his kin and his Lord and his one true master.

How could the Creator torture him so by revealing such a vision to him? What was the significance of it? Just what did it mean?

Nile could not understand it, he could not understand why the Creator would choose to reveal such a vision to him and just what significance was it of exactly?

Was Zariah in danger? Was that perhaps a glimpse of the future? Was it just a method to convey a message?

Zariah was Crimson Alpha! She was the protector of the realms! Her existence, the life force within her veins and fire of the Crimson Flame blazing within her, these were the only factors that kept the darkness at bay.

These were the factors that strengthened the element seal, keeping the darkness sealed forever beneath the Earth, this was the only line of protection the supernatural realm had from the darkness.

Did they not already know it clearly?! If Zariah fell, there was no other who could wield the Crimson Flame. If Zariah fell... the supernatural realm would fall along with her.

To the Crimson Moon, though Zariah was their leader, she was also their greatest treasure... the one person every Crimson Wolf would sacrifice their lives to protect.

The guardian of the element seal had the duty as protector of the realm, but to the Crimson Wolves, their sacred duty was protecting their guardian... Zariah.

And so Nile knew it clearly, that for Zariah to end up in such a situation, it could only mean one thing... the Crimson Moon had been massacred, there was no living Crimson wolf left.

"Is this the future you deem fit for us?! Is this to be our fate?! You should just let us die then! Why did you let me see?! Why must you let me see?! What can I do if I know of it?! How can I change your will?!" Nile roared in a voice filled with pain.

Nile released a frustrated snarl, his entire body trembling as frustrated tears dripped down his eyes.

He kept his head faced to the ground, barely holding himself up with his trembling hands as he completely broke down, images of the vision stuck to his mind.

As strangled sobs escaped Nile, he picked up the sound of something hitting the ground and he tilted his head to the side, watching a little silvery pearl bouncing on the cave ground.

’A pearl...the tears of a merman...’ Nile thought in surprise as he lifted his gaze up to meet those familiar silver orbs of the merman, Kristen.

As Nile expected, silent tears trailed down the cheeks of the merman and Nile found himself completely baffled to see the hardened warrior and Chief Royal Guard of the Sea Kingdom actually crying.

"Are you okay? What happened? Did someone come while I meditated? Are you hurt?" Nile shot out questions in quick successions as he turned to sit and began inspecting the merman.

"I left my merman in one piece and Creator help whoever has made it otherwise... someone will have to give me an explanation." Nile swore as he examined the merman, relieved to see there were no physical injuries on his form.

"Did the pain relapse while I was under?" Nile asked again, his brows squinted in concern as he lifted a hand to place it over the merman’s forehead, examining the merman’s condition with his magic.

The merman shook his head slightly and Nile sighed in relief.

"I know enough to know the tears of the mers that form pearls come from deep sadness and an aching heart." Nile pointed out, informing the merman that he was not getting away without an explanation.

"It’s okay...you can tell me what happened. I know I did try to kill you and I cannot promise I won’t try again, but rest assured...I will never let anyone hurt you, not for as long as you are mine to protect." Nile vowed, hoping his words could ease the merman to tell him what had happened. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

Zariah had entrusted the merman into his care and Nile would be damned before he let anyone tousle even a hair on the merman’s hair wrongly,

For the five days of their journey left, the merman was his to protect and Nile had never once failed a mission, he would not begin failing now.

Nile watched as the merman lifted a hand up to Nile’s face and then his fingers brushed the tear track left behind by Nile’s tears.

Nile frowned slightly as it did not take him too long to understand the merman’s meaning.

"You mean to say you cried because I was?" Nile asked in bafflement, the merman shook his head slightly before he moved his hand down and rested it over Nile’s chest, right where his heart was located.

Nile felt his heart skip a bit, again, it did not take him even a moment to understand the merman’s meaning.

"You cried because you knew I was in pain and hurting? And you didn’t know how to help me so your heart ached?" Nile asked to be certain, his lips twitching in amusement when the merman nodded slowly.

Nile was completely astonished and so he could only let out a quiet chuckle as he watched the merman’s cheek redden and he turned his face away from Nile.

"Come on... don’t be shy now, you weren’t shy just a moment ago." Nile teased, for some reason, he just wanted to see the merman smile.

Although Nile was deeply touched that the merman cared enough to want to ease his pain and felt helpless when he was unable to,

Nile found he did not like seeing the merman cry at all, he would much rather see a smile...

And truly, as Nile watched the merman’s lips stretch into a smile, he felt all the pain overwhelming his heart was kept at bay and he returned the smile.

"You’re not so bad after all, I thought mermen were supposed to be all tough and unapproachable to people from above surface...makes me wonder if you have a crush on me." Nile teased again,

However his teasing did no go exactly as planned when the merman bobbed his head quickly in a nod.

Nile’s jaws dropped open in shock as he blinked, just staring at the merman for a long moment, not sure if he was jesting or being serious.

"Now... inability to speak and the fact that you may very well die soon considered... that is one ingenious way to confess to a guy who tried to kill you." Nile murmured sarcastically, shaking his head as he leaned against the cave wall... releasing a quiet chuckle at the absurdity of his own life.
