Chapter 1954: Chapter 2017: The Matter Is Settled

Li Yifei chuckled and said, "Old Wen, don’t take it to heart. You don’t need to worry about this matter. We did run into each other last night!"

"What? How did you two meet?" Wen Dagang quickly asked.

Li Yifei briefly recounted what happened last night. Wen Dagang listened for a while without saying anything, and finally said, "What a mess, damn it. I was hesitating yesterday about whether to let you guys get acquainted. This guy’s really a bit too proud and reckless, and he usually doesn’t act too reliably..."

"So you shouldn’t worry about this matter. If he wants to find me, let him come. I’m not someone easily scared," Li Yifei said.

Wen Dagang frowned and tapped the steering wheel, saying, "How can we not care about this? He’s a deputy director now, and it’s not difficult for him to cause you trouble. Although... sigh, how about this: let me call him to explain. I’ll host a dinner tonight and apologize. Old Li, you just got back from the army, and the rules there are different from society. We have tempers, sure, but we can’t be too stubborn either!"

"It’s really fine. Don’t worry, Old Wen. I haven’t done anything excessive. From a friend’s perspective, he should thank me. If he kept making a fuss, the situation might have escalated."

"That’s true, this whole thing is just a mess..."

"Alright, just forget about it. It’s no big deal. He’s just trying to scare you. A deputy director, just a Principal Rank; even those higher officials aren’t that high and mighty."

"Alright then, I’ll just pretend I don’t know about this. He asked me for your phone number, and I didn’t give it to him. Just ignore him," Wen Dagang said hesitantly, feeling a bit like he was letting Yifei down.

But Li Yifei gave a faint smile and said, "Good. That’s fine. It’s no big deal. Mile City is so big, I don’t believe he can find me."

"That’s true, Mile City is so big, it’s really hard for him to find you."

After discussing this, Wen Dagang was about to continue with his work, but Li Yifei remembered something and said, "Old Wen, about your daughter’s schooling, I’ll help you ask around later. Keep your phone handy!"

"Huh? Um..." Wen Dagang wanted to say not to bother. He felt quite embarrassed facing Li Yifei. He had invited him to dinner yesterday, got drunk himself, and then made Yifei pay and send him home. Plus, he caused trouble with Meng Qingyou. Who knows what the fallout from that would be? Hearing that Li Yifei was going to help out, which was much better than Meng Qingyou would do, Wen Dagang hesitated.

"Let’s not overthink it. I know a couple of people, might be useful. I’ll ask around, wait for the news!" Li Yifei said.

"Alright, thank you so much, Old Li. You’re really a true friend!" Wen Dagang quickly thanked him. Once he hung up, just before starting the car, he smacked his forehead, muttering, "Damn, I haven’t even paid him back yet. This is really embarrassing."

Lin Qiong curiously looked at Li Yifei, and after he hung up, she asked, "What were you up to yesterday, getting into fights and saving people...?"

"Oh, it was nothing. I ran into some old classmates from primary school and had a drink with them. Alright, you go to work first. You’re a director now, and you still get in late every day," Li Yifei said, patting Lin Qiong on her behind, with a laugh.

Lin Qiong immediately glared at him, rolling her eyes, saying, "It’s all your fault, coming back so late, all reeking of alcohol, and then going crazy in the morning. How could I not be late!"

"Last night’s chaos was my doing, but can you blame me for this morning, too?" Li Yifei retorted, glaring back. "Who was it that woke up this morning begging for meat, grabbing it, and stuffing it in?"

"Enough with you, you lecher. If you weren’t my husband, I would have had you arrested a long time ago!" Lin Qiong said, picking up her bag and shooting him a big side-eye, then walked out with a swaying step.

Despite her words, her body was quite honest. Thanks to Li Yifei, Lin Qiong was refreshed and full of spirit, her mood incredibly good. Just as she stepped out, she suddenly remembered something, rushed back, and said, "Hubby, earlier you were talking about a director and chief someone offended you?"

"Minor issue, Director, just hurry up and get to work. Alright, I’m heading off to someone else’s place too," Li Yifei wrapped his arm around Lin Qiong’s waist, kissed her on the mouth, and only then did Lin Qiong walk away satisfied.

Li Yifei, having promised Wen Dagang, did not dawdle. He really didn’t know exactly who to ask since the officials he knew were too high-level.

So he called Ye Yunzhu, asking her to find someone to handle it. Ye Yunzhu was taken aback too. The Li family didn’t need to deal with such matters. Schooling could be settled at home, so she asked for more details and then said, "Hubby, I’ll ask around about this. Don’t worry, it’s absolutely no problem!"

Officially, school enrollment isn’t open to negotiation, but society is all about connections. There’s always a workaround. If a dignified Vice Mayor, especially one overseeing education, made a call, to transfer a primary schooler’s account, arrange a school, now that’s really not an issue at all.

However, Ye Yunzhu couldn’t make the call directly, so she called her secretary and asked her to take care of it. Li Yifei had already told Ye Yunzhu the name of the school and the child.

Li Yifei thought it was settled, but by the afternoon, Ye Yunzhu still hadn’t called him. Li Yifei wasn’t angry, he just called her, but Ye Yunzhu’s phone was turned off. Li Yifei guessed she was probably in a meeting.

Meanwhile, Wen Dagang didn’t drive his taxi for long today before his wife called him home. Their daughter refused to go to school. She cried as soon as they asked, threw a tantrum at home, and refused to go no matter what. Wen Dagang was already on edge these past few days, and this morning’s incident with Meng Qingyou left him even more upset. Hearing that his daughter didn’t want to go to school infuriated him immediately. He yelled at his wife over the phone and turned the car around to head home.

At home, his daughter was still crying, refusing to go to school. She wouldn’t talk no matter how he asked. Wen Dagang’s daughter, Wen Dan, was nine years old, but she was only in the second grade of primary school. She had started school late because of registration issues.

Returning home, seeing his daughter still crying infuriated Wen Dagang. Without a word, he slapped her twice, which quieted her down. He dragged her to the car and forced her to go to school. As they approached the school gate, Wen Dagang pointed at his daughter and shouted, "You’re going to school today, or I’m disowning you!"

His daughter, Wen Dan, was scared into submission. With her lips pursed, she went to school. Only then did Wen Dagang resume his taxi driving. Not long after, he scraped a private car. It was his fault; he failed to overtake and abruptly slowed down, and the car next to him couldn’t dodge in time.

After a lengthy negotiation, the other party finally agreed to let Wen Dagang pay 500 yuan without involving the insurance.

The more he thought about it, the more frustrated and angry he became. That afternoon, Wen Dagang let the night shift driver take over early and went home.

Alone at home, with his wife still at work, Wen Dagang grabbed a bottle of alcohol and started drinking away his sorrows.

When Li Yifei called, Wen Dagang had already drunk half a bottle of white spirit. He adjusted his mood slightly upon receiving the call.

"Hello, Old Li? What’s up?"

"Old Wen, your daughter’s school transfer is almost done. If nothing goes wrong, she can attend the new school in a day or two." Li Yifei spoke directly, without suspense.

"What?" Wen Dagang felt he hadn’t heard clearly and asked again.

Li Yifei repeated, laughing. Wen Dagang slammed the table, stood up, eyes widened. This time he heard clearly, and he yelled into the phone, "Old Li, are you saying... my daughter’s transfer is possible?"

"Yes, it can be done, but I need to ask which school you’re transferring her to." Li Yifei said, having just received a call from Ye Yunzhu, who had just finished several meetings and got the news from her secretary.

Transferring is easy but not knowing which school to go to had delayed things.

Wen Dagang gulped water to swallow what was in his mouth, holding the phone excitedly, saying, "Old Li, no jokes, huh? You’re really making it happen?"

"Why would I lie to you? Don’t worry, the person I found is reliable, but now I need to ask you which school you want to transfer to!" Li Yifei replied.

Wen Dagang patted his head, trying to clear his thoughts. He was now sure he hadn’t misheard, and Li Yifei wasn’t joking with him, so Wen Dagang muttered, "Wencheng Primary School is an option. No, that place is a bit far; Center Primary School is closer. But that’s a prestigious school, not easy for ordinary people to get into. Maybe, let’s try Third Primary School; it’s a bit far, but the teachers are good, and I heard the rate of advancement is high."

"Let’s go with Center Primary School; it’s close to your place, right?" Li Yifei decided for him.

"Center Primary School is definitely close; just across the street and over the overline bridge, it’s safe, the kids don’t even cross the road by themselves. But, Old Li, that school is a top school in our district, even the whole city, I wouldn’t dare to think it possible. I’d be satisfied with a transfer to Third Primary School." Wen Dagang chuckled sheepishly.

"Let’s set it for Center Primary School. Schooling is a big deal; laying a good foundation makes future studies easier. Didn’t we fall behind because we didn’t have a good foundation?" Li Yifei said.

"Hehe, that’s me, not you. You were a good student, acing every subject," Wen Dagang chuckled, then seriously said, "Old Li, you can really get my girl into Center Primary School? That must cost a lot, right? If my girl can go to Center Primary School, I’d spend 10,000, no, 20,000!"

"What money? No need to spend money."

"What? How can you get things done without spending money? Old Li, that’s a huge favor; don’t be embarrassed. If you can do it, I won’t hold back, but you also have to ask for help. We should spend it where it’s needed. I’ve heard getting into Center Primary School takes at least 50,000, but I... don’t have much, but I can’t not spend at all!"
