Chapter 1929: Chapter 1992: Bomb

The car in front also slowed down and fired back. Li Yifei pulled out a handgun from his chest, a few precise shots, two bullets hit the opponent’s tires, and the car in the middle began to lose control, crashing headlong into a roadside rock, its hood began to smoke, the people inside were dazed from the impact. The car in front was too far away, Li Yifei’s bullets missed, but the people inside were already furious, shouting angrily and retaliating.

The Savak were originally intelligence personnel and were excellent at weapon shooting, making them a tricky intelligence organization. However, Li Yifei had already slowed down the car, then turned around, and Xu Shanshan behind him did the same, both preparing to escape rather than confront the opponent head-on.

How could the people in the first car let them leave so smoothly, they immediately chased after them. Li Yifei glanced back and noticed the distance between the cars was extremely close, so he raised his gun again to shoot. Several bullets hit the car window; Li Yifei aimed at the driver, but found that the opponent’s car actually had bulletproof glass installed, whereas his own car had no protection at all, and the glass of the rear window was already shattered, putting Li Yifei in danger.

This won’t do. Just as Li Yifei was about to think of a solution, he saw Xu Shanshan in the front suddenly make a sharp turn, the car rushed off the road to the roadside, the hood turned, made a quick stop, and a machine gun extended out of the car window. Li Yifei quickly turned the steering wheel, swung the car, and yielded the position to Xu Shanshan.

Xu Shanshan was already firing, bullets rattling out. Like Li Yifei, Xu Shanshan aimed at the opponent’s tires. A burst of bullets quickly finished, and the rattling bullets hit the tires, causing this chasing car to swiftly lose control. Luckily, the opponent had already slowed down, so didn’t crash into the roadside.

"Go." Xu Shanshan shouted to Li Yifei, her face carrying a hint of pride as she backed up the car, turned the hood, and returned to the road.

Li Yifei chuckled and followed suit.

Behind them, one car was already scrapped, and the other had its tires blown out. The people inside were furious, wishing they could jump out and chase on foot. But those two cars were getting farther away, they could only fire a few bullets, which unfortunately couldn’t hit.

After driving for ten minutes, Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan saw they had shaken off the opponent and began to slow down, with Li Yifei leading the way. The cars drove into a small valley, parked in succession. Li Yifei came to the back of the car, opened the door, counted, and found six people inside, wearing robes and hooded. Li Yifei wasn’t sure who they were, just hoped they were the ones he was supposed to rescue.

Xu Shanshan also got out of the car, walked over, and frowned because the smell in this car was really strong, a stench of animal dung emanating from these people. Xu Shanshan couldn’t help pinching her nose and said, "Honey, you better check if these are the people we’re looking for, this smell is really unbearable."

Li Yifei also found it unpleasant; he nodded, put one foot on the door, and spoke to the people inside in Chinese language: "Can any of you understand the Chinese language?"

After asking, the bodies of the few people inside kept twisting. Li Yifei climbed in, preparing to remove their head coverings, so they could identify if they were the compatriots.

But just as he was about to enter, Xu Shanshan suddenly pulled him back and shouted, "Something’s wrong, I hear a ticking sound."

Ticking? Li Yifei was also startled, then immediately heard a beeping, somewhat urgent electronic sound in his ears. No, this wasn’t right. Li Yifei hurriedly retreated, turned around, grabbed Xu Shanshan, and ran towards a distance.

This was more than wrong; it was extremely wrong. That urgent beeping sound was clearly the sound before a bomb explosion.

The two dived behind a large rock and heard a sudden loud noise behind them. With a boom, the bomb exploded, and Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan were less than twenty meters away. Luckily, they were behind the big rock; otherwise, they might not have survived.

No matter how strong the body, it couldn’t withstand such an explosion. Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan were already strong, but still ended up dizzy and ringing in the ears from the blast.

The two waited a while, only raising their heads from behind the big rock after the shockwave of the explosion dissipated. They saw the two cars had already been damaged, the car with the prisoners was directly blown apart, with residual fire still burning, and Xu Shanshan’s car was also flipped and deformed.

Li Yifei frowned, they were already in such a pathetic state behind the big rock, the six people in the car were the first to bear the brunt, how could they possibly have survived. Li Yifei told Xu Shanshan to stay where she was while he went over to inspect. As he thought, those people were blown to bits, only two bodies were relatively intact. Li Yifei went over, pulled off their head coverings, from their charred faces, barely made out that they weren’t Huaxia people, but Middle Easterners with full beards.

"Damn it!" Li Yifei cursed, who would’ve thought those damn Savak would strap bombs to these people, and the bombs would detonate. If not for Xu Shanshan’s reminder, Li Yifei might have missed it, and by the time he discovered it, it would have been too late.

Li Yifei felt frustrated thinking about it; if he had known, he would’ve killed all those people just now.

After checking several people in a row, they all had Middle Eastern faces. These people’s mouths were stuffed with cloth strips, so they couldn’t make any sounds; otherwise, Li Yifei could have known earlier who they were.

Unclear of these people’s identities, Li Yifei felt he had been fooled, so he was very angry.

Xu Shanshan, holding back the urge to vomit, also walked over, patted Li Yifei’s shoulder, and said, "Honey, let’s go. There was an explosion here, and I’m afraid someone will come soon."

"Alright!" Li Yifei nodded. He took out his phone to call home, only to find that the screen had been crushed earlier, and Xu Shanshan hadn’t brought a phone to Iran at all.

"This is what they call misfortune never comes singly; we can only walk back." Li Yifei looked at the sky to determine the direction. Xu Shanshan had already pulled the backpack out of their car, which still contained weapons, and it was indeed better to have them on hand.

Li Yifei took the bag and slung it over his shoulder. It was now clear that the people they had risked saving were not comrades but unidentified Middle Eastern people who were killed in the explosion, leaving no information behind.

As they walked back, Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan did encounter several cars heading toward the direction they had just come from. Each time, the two of them managed to avoid being spotted.

"It’s a bit unsafe; let’s take a detour." Li Yifei suggested. He still remembered the rough map of the area and wasn’t worried about getting lost. The two quickly dashed into the mountains. Though this route was slower, it was much safer. After all, they were up against Savak, Iran’s intelligence agency, with immense power, and it was not wise for even skilled individuals like Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan to confront a national intelligence agency head-on.

After a chaotic night, Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan finally returned to Soros and entered the city, sighing in relief as the night’s incident hadn’t yet affected this area. Soros was fairly busy in the morning, with some stalls selling food. Li Yifei bought some, and they ate with their hands.

"This stuff tastes really good!" Xu Shanshan, seemingly hungry after walking half the night to return by morning, couldn’t help but say. After being up all night, they were still in good spirits, though their mood wasn’t great. The rescue mission had failed; the people were saved but weren’t compatriots, and then they were blown up.

Li Yifei nodded, stuffing the last piece into his mouth, chewing and swallowing, then unscrewed some water, gulped it down, and said, "Let’s go. We need to find the bearded guy and ask. His information wasn’t accurate."

"I get annoyed when I see those bearded people now. It seems like everyone with a beard looks the same." Xu Shanshan muttered as they headed to their previous accommodation, making their way through half the city to find their hotel. Just as Xu Shanshan was about to enter, Li Yifei grabbed her.

"Wait a minute, something’s not right." Li Yifei said softly, scanning the surroundings. The area was relatively quiet, with a few cars parked and occasional passersby, but the stillness put Li Yifei on alert.

A few minutes later, Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan returned to their room, not entering through the front door but instead jumping to the second floor and entering their room. The scene before them confirmed Li Yifei’s suspicion that something was definitely wrong.

The room was a mess, their limited luggage had been rummaged through, and it was a wreck, but there wasn’t much in their luggage anyway.

No, their fake identities were in the bag. Li Yifei rummaged through and found they had indeed been taken.

Robbed? Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan were uncertain. Leaving Xu Shanshan in the room, Li Yifei went next door to find the bearded man, knocked on the door, but there was no response. Alarmed, Li Yifei forced the door open only to find no one inside. The bed linens were neatly folded as if no one had stayed there.

No, no, Li Yifei’s eyes darted around. The bearded man was gone, the bed was immaculately clean, indicating he hadn’t slept there last night, and their room was ransacked. Their fake identities and money were also missing.

Damn it, Li Yifei pounded his fist against the wall, only to hear Xu Shanshan calling him from the next room. Li Yifei rushed back to find Xu Shanshan standing by the window, pointing outside, "Honey, there’s a group of armed people out there!"

Li Yifei hurried to the window and indeed saw a group had already stormed into the courtyard. They were approaching the entrance, with weapons in their hands.
