Chapter 1930: Chapter 1993: Pursuit and Escape

A week of continuous updates, and another 20,000 words yesterday. I’m a bit exhausted. Updates will return to normal soon. I hope everyone understands and supports this. Also, if you have any votes, please give them out, like recommendation votes, they don’t cost anything as long as you have an account.

They were exposed. Li Yifei immediately realized it. He sneered, pulled the backpack from the bed, tossed two guns to Xu Shanshan, and said, "I’ll hold them off. You go out the back and find a car."

"Okay." Xu Shanshan nodded, tucked the guns away, smiled at Li Yifei, stood on tiptoe to kiss his lips, and said, "Be careful."

Li Yifei chuckled. As Xu Shanshan was about to leave, he added, "Go further away, wait for me at the place we got snacks this morning."

Xu Shanshan hesitated slightly, then heard Li Yifei say, "It’s likely Savak people; there should be lots of spies outside. The further away, the easier for us to escape."

"Alright, I’ll wait for you at the breakfast place." Xu Shanshan nodded solemnly and darted out. Li Yifei, on the other hand, took out a machine gun, loaded the bullets, and waited on the second floor.

The group downstairs charged up the stairs to the second floor. They were searching room by room. The hallway wasn’t straight; there was a right-angle bend. As they finished searching the front and moved to the other side of the hallway, just as they were about to move forward, gunfire erupted. The two people in front fell immediately, causing panic among those behind, who started shooting in the hallway.

The sound of gunfire sent many into a panic. They rushed out of their rooms to check the situation and, upon discovering a gunfight, hurried back to close their doors.

Standing in the hallway, Li Yifei waited calmly for them to charge again. He knew he hadn’t shot the wrong people. His extraordinary hearing told him of their intentions even while they were still on the first floor — they were coming for him and Xu Shanshan.

Therefore, he had no reason to show these people any mercy. As soon as they showed themselves, Li Yifei would shoot. After a few instances, the Savak people on the stairs didn’t dare charge up. Within moments, six of them had been shot. Bullets were deadly; if they didn’t kill, they at least removed a layer of skin. Plus, Li Yifei’s shooting was so precise, hitting vital spots. Of the six shot, three had already stopped breathing.

"Damn, call for backup immediately. This guy is too strong!" The leader of the operation angrily shouted at a subordinate downstairs, who looked at him innocently and said, "Boss, you’re in charge, you should make the call."

"Nonsense, as if I don’t know!" The other cursed a few times, took out the phone, and called for reinforcements. Although Soros City wasn’t a big city, many intelligence agencies had offices there, and domestic control was strict, so when the call was made, many people moved quickly.

Li Yifei wasn’t going to sit and wait for death there. Once he had finished with his intimidation, he began preparing to withdraw, stalling the enemies for a while to let Xu Shanshan get a car and reach a safe place to wait for him.

Ten minutes later, they no longer dared to charge up, but they did call in people to surround the place. As long as someone was inside, they’d find a way to take them out. If they couldn’t catch a live person, they’d catch a dead one!

Unfortunately, by five minutes, Li Yifei had already retreated. The gun left behind was still firing, but it wasn’t Li Yifei pulling the trigger. He had used items in the room to make a simple setup. A hook tied to a dog’s leg; if the dog struggled, it would naturally pull the trigger, causing the gun to fire.

Minutes later, Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan met up by the breakfast stand. Xu Shanshan had gotten a very old car, but such a car was considered good locally in Soros City. Handing Xu Shanshan a fruit juice, Li Yifei motioned for her to sit in the passenger seat.

Xu Shanshan pouted but obediently moved to the seat. Li Yifei placed the remaining weapons in the back, and they drove off from Soros.

His phone screen was broken, temporarily preventing contact with home, but with Savak having found their place, and the big beard missing, Li Yifei had a few guesses. One was the big beard noticed something wrong and left early without informing Li Yifei. Another possibility was the big beard got caught. Having spent time in the Middle East, Li Yifei was familiar with the environment. Iran’s intelligence agencies were quite strong; otherwise, they wouldn’t be so impenetrable during the nuclear issues, so the big beard likely got trapped.

The last possibility was the one Li Yifei didn’t want to consider — the big beard betrayed them. Or, the big beard and Savak were in cahoots and sold their information to Savak, so...

"No way!" Li Yifei slapped the steering wheel, startling Xu Shanshan, who was about to sleep, into alertness. She opened her eyes to look at Li Yifei and asked, "What happened?"

"We were set up," Li Yifei furrowed his brows and said.

"Was it... about those prisoners?" Xu Shanshan wasn’t dumb. Despite being a bit drowsy, she understood immediately when Li Yifei mentioned it. Li Yifei nodded heavily, saying, "It was a trap from the start. The big beard was never a good person. He brought us here to keep us stable and then have Savak prepare in advance. That’s why there were bombs tied to those prisoners, deliberately luring us to rescue them. Once rescued, the bomb explodes..."

"And then we’d be blasted to bits..." Xu Shanshan, speaking with a face showing anger, continued, "If that’s the case, that big beard is too despicable."

"Huh, we shouldn’t have trusted him. We got careless, thinking those found by home would be trustworthy, but we forgot his identity," Li Yifei said, self-mockingly smiling.

Xu Shanshan angrily said, "He took our money and still sold us out. If I catch him, I’ll kill him."

"Let’s get out of here first, then find a place to make a call home," said Li Yifei.

They drove to another city — Mogadishu, over 100 kilometers from Soros City. After two hours, they arrived. They went into a clothing store, changed clothes, didn’t stay in a hotel, but bought a phone, switched SIM cards, and called home.

Once connected, Li Yifei sternly questioned the other side as to why the big beard went wrong.

Those back home seemed confused and asked, "What big beard?"

"The contact person you found for me," Li Yifei said, somewhat angrily.

"Contact person? Oh, you mean that person, what happened to him?" 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"What happened? He wasn’t our guy at all, nearly got me killed!" Li Yifei explained, detailing what transpired. The folks back home were in shock upon hearing this; this ’big beard’ was supposedly a high-ranking intelligence officer, who every year evacuated significant funds from them. He had turned away?

Though in the espionage world, betrayals were common and not surprising; some were even double agents, triple agents, or in the business of doing such things. Nevertheless, encountering it still left a sense of disgust.

Recognizing Li Yifei’s anger, those home quickly calmed him, advising him to find a safe place and stay put. They would investigate first.

"You bloody idiots!" Li Yifei cursed and hung up. At this point, he realized counting on those people at home was futile. He was furious — he came to rescue people, yet the other party targeted to kill, deploying many people. The recent capture attempt involved dozens; if not for their skills and alertness, foreseeing the danger, they’d be in big trouble now.

Li Yifei then called his old leader to explain the situation. The old leader frowned, saying, "Yifei, if that’s the case, then don’t contact those people anymore. I can’t watch you get played."

"Old leader, I’m not calling to complain; I wanted to tell you something: I’m taking this on, no matter how tough it is. If those people are still alive, I will rescue them. If chaos breaks, it’s not my fault."

"This..." The old leader hesitated. He knew what consequences could arise if Li Yifei went rampant. When in Japan, Li Yifei had decimated the world’s largest Underworld organization, Yamaguchi Group, which not only intimidated Japan’s underground forces but also frightened government officials, even triggering protests. The old leader knew Japan lost one of their top operatives because of it. Allowing Li Yifei to go berserk this time...

Being on the state’s mission, the state could disown Li Yifei’s actions. Should incidents occur, they could argue he acted alone, but the old leader couldn’t do that. This was his subordinate, whom he had trained. Failing to back him would be unacceptable. That’s the point of Li Yifei’s call: he wanted the old leader’s support. After a few seconds of deliberation, the old leader said, "Yifei, go ahead, rescuing fellow comrades is paramount; but every comrade must be accounted for!"

"Yes, sir." Li Yifei responded loudly. The old leader then added, "I have one condition."

"Please say it."

"Act within reason. Cause trouble no more than my rank can cover."

"Haha, rest assured, I’m only out to rescue. Telling you in advance is because I plan to kill. Those cursed Savak people are like ghosts; negotiating with them requires killing."

"Permission granted. If anything happens, I’ll take responsibility!" The old leader said firmly, already displeased with people in the northern military region — what the hell were they doing? They messed up their own operation, got help for rescue, yet there’s more trouble. Can’t they get anything right?
