Chapter 1928: Chapter 1991: Savak

The two climbed the small hill to observe the distant camp. The camp was built on flat ground and appeared to be a military camp. However, from the outside, it seemed to lack many military facilities and looked like a small camp, with a few soldiers patrolling at the entrance. From a high vantage point, not many people were visible moving inside the camp.

If their comrades were indeed imprisoned here, then Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan’s rescue mission would be relatively easy, at least on the surface. Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan didn’t rush to infiltrate but instead observed carefully for a while.

They found that indeed there were not many people in the camp, and it could even be said there was hardly any defense. Xu Shanshan said in a low voice, "Why do I feel it’s too easy to get in here? Could it be we are in the wrong place?"

Li Yifei smiled and said, "We’ll find out once we go in."

"True, let’s move then." Xu Shanshan glanced at the moon. Conveniently, a cloud obscured the moonlight, making the night even darker.

The two then prepared to descend the hill and approached the periphery of the camp. Li Yifei checked the area and found that it lacked even basic defenses. The two of them easily climbed into the camp. Inside, it was very quiet. Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan split up to investigate.

It was indeed a military camp, but there were probably only about a hundred soldiers, making the large camp seem sparsely populated. Most were asleep at the time. The two searched from front to back and quickly finished searching the entire camp without discovering anything. Xu Shanshan pinched her nose, crinkling her face as she said to Li Yifei, "The smell here is awful; it’s filled with body odor. This isn’t a military camp; it’s a pigsty."

"Let’s go!" Li Yifei shook his head. The camp indeed appeared ordinary and didn’t look like a secret base. Li Yifei attempted to see if there was an underground facility, but after searching, he found no entrances or signs, and he even infiltrated the soldiers’ dormitories.

Overall, it was a rudimentary camp with lax security. Seeing Xu Shanshan’s discomfort, Li Yifei began to lead her out. Just as they were about to exit, they heard several horn blasts outside the camp. The two remained still and soon saw two vehicles drive in. They were armored cars. The people inside got out and began shouting and seemed very dissatisfied. Li Yifei didn’t fully understand the Iranian language, as it differs from Arabic, and the speaker’s accent was quite strong. He vaguely made out a few words, such as telling others to come out and bringing certain people out.

What people? Li Yifei whispered the translation to Xu Shanshan, who immediately widened her eyes and said, "Could it be them?" 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

"Stay here, I’ll go over there and check it out, take care of yourself," Li Yifei pointed to the opposite side where the barracks were, wanting to examine up close.

Xu Shanshan nodded in agreement, saying, "You be safe too."

Li Yifei darted into the night and quickly reached the barracks area. The people sleeping inside had already been awakened by the commotion, initially voicing displeasure before realizing who was outside and waking up completely.

Li Yifei also learned the identity of the newcomers, who had a not unfamiliar name—Savak.

The Iranian intelligence agency had a vast and complex intelligence network, with the Ministry of Intelligence and National Security being its highest body, known as Savak. Other intelligence agencies included the Revolutionary Guards Intelligence Analysis Department and the Iranian Revolutionary Committee Intelligence Identification Center, among no fewer than ten relatively independent intelligence branches. The government, the Iranian Revolutionary Committee, the national defense forces, and the Revolutionary Guards had relatively independent intelligence branches, each responsible to specific personnel. The Ministry of Intelligence and National Security, the Revolutionary Guards Intelligence Analysis Department, the Revolutionary Committee’s Intelligence Identification Center, and the national defense army’s intelligence department are among no fewer than ten units involved in their specific intelligence work. Iran placed great importance on intelligence work, with its various intelligence agencies openly employing more than 20,000 people. The Ministry of Intelligence and National Security (Savak) openly had over 10,000 duty personnel and countless covert service members.

What is publicly apparent is merely the tip of the iceberg. Like in some countries on Earth, they place high importance on intelligence personnel, and even a roadside vendor could be employed by the intelligence department. They monitor not only newcomers but also their people.

And Savak is the overarching name for these personnel. As for the specific department these people belong to, Li Yifei couldn’t quite understand. Discovering intel officers here made Li Yifei quite pleased, especially as they were ordering the camp personnel to bring certain people out.

Li Yifei thought, hoping they were their comrades.

On the other side, Xu Shanshan was hidden in the shadows, holding her breath because the place was overwhelmingly smelly, reeking of urine. She shuffled to another spot discreetly, while soldiers from the camp escorted several people out from within.

Huh? Li Yifei frowned. That area was supposed to be Xu Shanshan’s searching zone, and she had said it was empty. Xu Shanshan watched as the people emerged from what wasn’t much of a building but more like a pigsty, filled with sheep and cows. When she searched earlier, she couldn’t stand the smell after a quick glance and hurried to search elsewhere, not expecting people to be hidden there.

Xu Shanshan blushed slightly, relieved that Li Yifei wasn’t beside her; she was afraid he would comment on her.

The people being escorted had their hands bound, linked one person to another, with black hoods over their heads, being led out. Suddenly, one person stumbled to the ground, causing the soldiers to hurl abuse and start kicking him.

Li Yifei clenched his fist. He and Xu Shanshan had guns, but the camp had over a hundred soldiers. Even if they were just layabouts, the number was significant, so he held back for now.

Most importantly, the captives were in the enemy’s hands, blindfolded. Li Yifei wasn’t sure if these people were his comrades.

After a beating, a few soldiers forcefully pulled the person up, but they didn’t remove the hood. The Savak members looked disdainfully and impatiently and ordered the camp to provide a vehicle to follow them, so these filthy pigs wouldn’t dirty their car.

The camp personnel had to provide a military truck to shove the captives in.

Both sides completed the handover without delay, and the vehicles were ready to depart. Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan exchanged glances, understanding each other’s intentions. The two stealthily exited the camp, returned to the hillside, took the car, and Li Yifei said, "Buckle up, we need to follow them!"

There were already not many vehicles here, and at night, tailing them silently was impractical. Li Yifei drove with the lights off in the darkness, relying on his good vision to avoid mishaps.

The Savak vehicles sped away, seemingly in a hurry, causing Li Yifei to drive quickly too. Xu Shanshan was slightly nervous. The guns in their backpacks were already out, with the safety off, ready for a firefight. Though Xu Shanshan rarely experienced such situations, Li Yifei remained calm, driving steadily.

After chasing for about twenty kilometers into a remote mountainous area, Li Yifei was unsure of their destination. Nonetheless, this location seemed ideal for pursuit. He informed Xu Shanshan before flooring the throttle to catch up. He drove with the lights off, and the people in the three vehicles ahead didn’t pay much attention until Li Yifei suddenly turned on the high beams, lighting up the interiors of the vehicles.

"You drive," Li Yifei said, halfway out the window. Xu Shanshan swiftly unbuckled her seatbelt and slid into the driver’s seat as they had planned earlier. After catching up, Li Yifei would jump onto the front vehicle to rescue the captives.

Despite the uncertainty of their identity, it was necessary to rescue them for inspection.

By the time Xu Shanshan reached the driver’s seat, Li Yifei had already climbed to the car’s roof. Xu Shanshan shouted for him to be careful as she floored the accelerator, nudging the last vehicle. The vehicle shook with the collision, the two cars linked, and Li Yifei seized the moment to leap onto the next vehicle.

Everything happened quickly, and the people in the two front vehicles hardly reacted. They were already driving fast, and a surprise attack came from behind, the occupants armed and prepared to retaliate, only to find the attacker on the third vehicle.

"Who’s there? Stop, kill him!" shouted the Savak leader in the lead car, drawing his gun. The two lead vehicles began to slow down while Li Yifei already clutched the rooftop with one hand and smashed the car window with the other. He then reached inside and grabbed the terrified driver, who hadn’t expected someone from above, hurriedly trying to dodge. But it was too late; Li Yifei grabbed him by the chest and pulled him out through the window.

Li Yifei tossed him to the ground and swiftly slipped inside through the window. The passenger attempted to shoot, but Li Yifei landed a punch squarely in his face, knocking him out. Securing the vehicle, Li Yifei opened the passenger door and kicked the man out, then turned to see hooded people in the back, absent of any Savak personnel, bringing him a moment of relief. He slowed the vehicle, putting some distance between the two vehicles ahead.
