Chapter 87: There is someone

The students had gathered for a lecture. That didn’t surprise Kyle, but it didn’t make things any easier either. Who knew how long it would drag on?

On the stage stood several officials and professors who had organized this trip for the students.

Thankfully, Kyle had someone by his side whose presence made it bearable, someone who kept him from yawning his way through the entire thing.

Under the table, their hands were intertwined.

Her lips curved into a soft smile, her eyes reflecting the same warmth.

On the other side, Ethan sat with Hannah and Clara, and surprisingly, Layena was there as well. She had arrived first, the others joining her later.

The violet-eyed girl couldn’t help but glance at Kyle. She had already shared all the information regarding this secret operation with the Commander. Her heart hadn’t allowed her to lie to the one person to whom she owed her life to.

And just as Layena had expected, the Commander was displeased by their irresponsible behavior and lack of accountability. They hadn’t informed the base about the situation and had chosen to take matters into their own hands. That alone was enough to subject them to an inquiry.

However, Veronica hadn’t ordered her to retreat. For that, Layena was grateful. She had been allowed to continue the mission, with Ethan involved.

Layena couldn’t tell whether she had truly convinced the Commander that Kyle was a suspect.

But one thing was certain. Once this investigation was complete, it would reach every ear in the organization, regardless of the outcome.

And when that happened... Layena knew the Astortia family wouldn’t remain silent.

’Haah... this is going to become difficult.’

Not long after, an elderly man stepped onto the stage and called out, "May I have your attention, please? Just a few minutes. I would like to share a very interesting story with you."

His voice carried across the hall, yet barely anyone paid attention.

For them, this lecture was nothing more than a countdown before a race. Once it ended, they would burst into a sprint and leave without a second thought.

Kyle, however, turned to look at the man, his brows slightly raised.

’Isn’t he... a famous archaeologist and researcher?’

He had seen him on social media before. A man known for discovering numerous relics over the years and publishing dozens of books on his findings and theories. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

For someone like him to be here... and the strangest part was that no one seemed to recognize him. None of the professors had even given a proper introduction to let the students know who they were.

Breaking through Kyle’s thoughts, the man began again, "This resort is built in a very special location. From a visitor’s perspective, it may seem like nothing more than a beautiful valley... a quiet place to relax and let go of your stress."

His eyes glinted behind his glasses, a subtle excitement flickering within them. "But there is a lore about this place... something you all might have never heard." He paused for a breath before continuing, "It is said that there was a time when a Goddess descended upon this land after a conflict with the deity of the moon. And in her displeasure, she refused to let even a single strand of moonlight touch her skin."

Leaning back slightly, he added, "That is why, regardless of the season, once you step into the forest, you will find yourself surrounded by dense fog, where not even a trace of silver light reaches the ground."

Kyle nodded. A nice story.

He didn’t know how much of it was true, but if even a fraction of it held any truth, then getting lost in those woods at night would be nothing short of terrifying.

Just then, Amanda asked, "Kyle... I wanted to ask you something."

Kyle hummed, a hint of surprise in his voice. "Why so hesitant?"

Amanda fidgeted slightly before finally asking, "When we were apart... did you see another girl?"

Kyle blinked, taken aback. "You mean I started dating someone within ten days of our breakup?"

Amanda fell silent. Hearing it phrased like that, even she realized how unreasonable it sounded. But still...

"I felt like there was someone in your room when I came to see you..."

Kyle froze for a brief second.

That day... after the explosion.

Veronica had come over to check on him, to examine his injuries, scold him, and heal him.

Later, Amanda arrived, and that was when he realized his mistake. That was also when he discovered she was a Nightwalker.

The truth was, there was nothing between him and Veronica. But he couldn’t reveal their connection. Veronica had made him promise.

So he said, "No, I was alone."

Amanda let out a quiet breath of relief, but then—

"But yes, I’ve made a friend recently. They have been a strong emotional support for me. Though I can’t tell you who it is... they asked me not to."

Amanda’s expression tightened with panic. "Not even me, Kyle? What’s so special about that person that you can’t tell me?"

Kyle gave a helpless smile. "Sorry, Amanda. A promise is a promise."

Amanda groaned softly. She hated this. He wasn’t even revealing whether this friend was a man or a woman. He had never hidden things from her before... but then again, she had no right to demand transparency when she herself had kept secrets for so long.

That thought alone was enough to silence her.

Meanwhile, the lecture, centered around explaining the significance of relics and monuments, finally came to an end after another hour.

Around nine, the students were asked to move toward the adjoining hall, where dinner was to be served.

Kyle gave her hand a gentle squeeze. "Let’s go—"

"Amanda!"

The call came from behind, sharp and urgent.

Both of them turned to see Hannah, Clara, Layena, and Ethan standing there. It was Ethan who had called out.

There was something in their eyes... an intensity that told Kyle, without a doubt, that something was wrong.

Amanda pressed her lips together before turning back to Kyle. In a soft voice, she said, "Please have dinner without me, Kyle—"

"No, Amanda." He cut her off, his grip on her hand firm. "I’ll wait for you. I won’t eat anything until you come back... safely. So don’t take too long."

A soft smile curved on her lips as she nodded.

The meaning was clear.

She had to stay safe... and return to him as soon as possible.

Once they all were out of sight, Kyle glanced towards the other exit of the hall.

Narrowing his eyes, he began to fold his sleeve.

Just then, the system informed,

[Host, remember you can’t use Genesis nor get hurt.]

’I know but won’t it be fun to observe things a little.’

A/N:- Imagine seeing a bunch of people throwing hands in open air. Yeah, that’s how Kyle’s gonna see this battle without God’s Eye.
