Starting With SSS-rank: I Get A New Skill Every Livestream-Chapter 88: Preparation
"What’s the sudden rush?" Amanda asked as she rushed outside the hall, still very reluctant. She wanted to spend at least tonight with Kyle. But now, she was forced to follow these people.
"If only you hadn’t forgotten your phone in your room, you would have known the reason behind the panic." Clara berated her, her eyes narrowed.
The teachers weren’t around nor were the other students since mostly everyone had gone to have dinner. It was a long day, and they weren’t given time to actually have a meal.
So, no one stopped them, not from exiting the hall, and not from Amanda asking,
"Yeah, I am irresponsible but rather than blaming me can someone tell what exactly the situation is?"
"You will find out," Layena spoke, silencing Amanda.
They didn’t speak another word and finally walked out of the resort.
"No way in seven hell..." Clara muttered under her breath, the sight before her making her eyes go wide.
Everyone came to a standstill.
The report suggested a sudden surge in Absence.
A sudden surge couldn’t be enough to represent what they were facing.
Four rifts.
Four portals have appeared before them.
All pulsing and maturing to spill monsters.
"This is a disaster...if they start spilling monsters...everyone here would die," Ethan muttered under his breath.
Hannah and Clara felt their hearts falling into the pit. They had only handled a single rift at a time and that one time they fought two rifts at once, they needed immediate backup from the corps.
Layena clicked her tongue, "Stop panicking," her voice cracked through the tension. She suddenly pulled something from her belt and moved closer to the rift.
It was a device meant to measure the Absence level of a rift.
Based on the level they would need to react now.
It takes time for a rift to develop so she knew she and the others didn’t need to panic.
Generally, Rifts appear in an isolated location due to the incompatibility of Genesis and Absence.
However, four of them have appeared here, so close to an establishment where around four hundred people were residing.
Then that could mean only one thing.
"First-grade." She muttered as soon as she pointed the device at the rift and saw the Absence range fluctuation between eight and ten.
First-grade meant a ghoul-ranked devil would come out. Not one but four of them. And alongside them, hundreds of Majins.
Due to their sheer number and presence, they surely would be able to dominate the Genesis radiating from the residents.
No number could be guessed but there was no denying it.
All these rifts would be too much for them to handle.
The people inside the resort...they all would be in grave danger.
"Contact the base." Layena gave the call, "We need reinforcement. Urgently."
The few strands of hope they had that the situation still might be under control were cut mercilessly when they heard Layen talking about backup.
Everyone knew how much she disliked asking for help. And if she was suggesting reinforcement, the first thing after assessing the situation...then, the situation has reached the red bar.
"I will contact the Commander," Hannah spoke first, taking out her phone.
"Should I contact the authorities and try evacuating the place?" Amanda asked, her concern clear. She needed to take Kyle far away from this place.
Ethan bit his lip...this was difficult. Without the intervention of the CPV, it would be almost impossible to convince the authorities to evacuate the resort.
He couldn’t tell how long it would take for the rifts to mature but he couldn’t wait to see. The forces that would burst out would be too much for them to handle.
Confidence was one thing, this was foolishness.
"What is happening?" Hannah asked no one in particular as she detached the phone from her ear and dialed again. But the results were the same.
"I can’t connect with the base," she told them, much to their shock.
"What do you mean? Ah-what is happening to my phone?" Clara frowned as she saw her phone blinking off and on as if it had caught a bug
The others took out their phones as well, meanwhile, Layena was already looking around.
"There is someone jamming the network." Ethan came to the conclusion, on the verge of cracking the screen in frustration
"But who? The rifts don’t release such strong waves to interrupt our signals." Clara asked something that no one could answer.
However, Layena had a feeling.
"There is someone around...watching us." Her words reached not only her team members but also the one who was causing this disturbance.
"Eheheh~so, you guys actually aren’t very naive after all."
All of them tensed at the voice as they turned to look at the man who appeared from behind the fountain, a happy grin on his face.
He wore a blue bandana on his head and a blond moustache on top of his lips.
He was holding something akin to a surfboard but just cylindrical in shape.
It radiated an orange hue and a rhythmic hum surrounded it like a blanket.
"Who are you?" Ethan asked, but before his question could be answered, someone charged straight at the man.
*Crackle*
Thunder appeared in her hand as Layena whipped the element towards the man.
*CRINGLE*
However, thunder didn’t touch the man.
A translucent barrier made of several white prisms appeared around him, causing the attack to utterly bounce off him.
Hannah was quite shocked, not only because Layena failed but also at how unhesitantly she launched that attack.
"Oh, no, no. That’s not a good way of greeting someone." The man shook his head in disappointment and crossed his arms.
The cylinder didn’t fall, still humming and causing the distress signal.
Layena growled, "What do you need?"
"Your life," the response was quiet and blood-soaked, "You all, behead yourself and I promise I will let your organization know about the situation."
Utter silence fell upon the space where all five of them stood.
Not disbelief but a cold, grim realisation settling in their chest.
This wasn’t a common burglar or criminal. He was here with a single intent.
To see them dead.
Layena took the command, "One of you, run as far as possible and try contacting the authorities."
Hannah glanced at Clara and the twin-tailed girl instantly nodded.
She took out her usual glasses and tied them around her head.
Genesis surrounded her like thin blades, her body began to tremble faintly, and just when she was about to burst into a sprint,
"No, wait!" Ethan cried out instantly, his eyes flashing briefly.
Clara ripped the soil and grass with the sudden pause as she turned towards him, "What happened?" Frustration laced in her voice since it takes more than they realize to pause after charging up.
Ethan raised his hand and pointed towards the exit.
"There...is something surrounding us."
Everyone followed his line of sight, and there it was.
Faintly flickering just to let its presence known.
Another barrier.
Clara’s face paled.
If a barrier could withstand Layena’s attack then if she had hit it with all her force....
She shuddered just at the thought.
"Eheheh~Nice, nice. Now you all understand the situation." The man with moustache spoke, "Not only you all are trapped here with me, but soon, all those people inside the resort would be locked inside with these monsters too."
Layena gritted her teeth.
It was a dead end.
